Why You Should Care About Neglected Tropical Diseases

Written By Vanessa Kariuki ||

Every year on January 30, the world commemorates World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day.

The critical day provides a chance to keep up the momentum toward putting an end to the suffering brought on by these diseases (NTDs).

This year’s World Health Day has as its theme “Achieving health equity to end the neglect of poverty-related diseases,” with the tagline “From neglect to care.”

This highlights the need to concentrate on the millions of people who have little or no access to care services.

There are 20 different diseases known as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), and they are all brought on by different pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and parasitic worms (helminths).

They disproportionately afflict the poorest, most marginalized people, including children, women, and the elderly, and are marked by a high level of morbidity, impairment, and stigma.

In order to make progress toward universal health coverage, it is essential to combat NTDs.

Nearly half of the Kenyan population is at risk of one or two NTDs.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the need for early treatment, which is frequently provided free of charge, increase donor funding and country ownership of national NTD programs.

The government is also pushing to inspire communities to participate in prevention, control, elimination, and eradication activities to ensure that “no one is left behind.”

Juventus Suffers 2-0 Home Loss To Monza

Juventus suffered another blow in their bid for Champions League qualification as they slumped to a 2-0 home defeat by Monza in Serie A on Sunday.

Juventus are languishing 13th with 23 points, two places behind Monza.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side have not been able to recover momentum after being docked 15 points this month following an investigation into the club’s transfer dealings. They are 15 points behind AC Milan in the last Champions League qualification spot.

Monza took the lead after 18 minutes when Jose Machin sent a well-timed through ball to Patrick Ciurria who shot high into the net.

Dany Mota doubled Monza’s lead six minutes before halftime when he got the ball inside the box, rounded Juve keeper Wojciech Szczesnyand put the ball into the empty net.

Juventus dominated the second half but were repeatedly denied by Monza keeper Michele Di Gregorio who made several good saves.

Brighton Crashes Liverpool Out Of FA Cup

Kaoru Mitoma scored in stoppage time as Brighton knocked holders Liverpool out of the FA Cup with an impressive victory at the Amex.

With the game heading to a draw, Japan winger Mitoma produced a great piece of control before firing in from close range to stun the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, who were beaten 3-0 at the Seagulls two weeks ago, took the lead midway through the first half when Harvey Elliott slotted into the bottom corner from Mohamed Salah’s pass following a quick break.

However, Brighton equalised when Tariq Lamptey’s shot from distance deflected heavily off Lewis Dunk to fly into the back of the net.

It looked like a replay at Anfield would be needed to decide the tie before Mitoma stepped up to snatch another big result for Brighton.

Liverpool won the FA Cup last season, but they have had a difficult season and are currently ninth in the Premier League table, while Brighton are sixth.

The hosts outplayed the Reds impressively on 14 January and clearly fancied their chances of another victory against them, as they demonstrated belief and confidence in this game.

Raila To Expose Details Of Chebukati Secret Visit

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga has claimed that former IEBC commissioners Wafula Chebukati, Abdi Guliye, and Boya Molu paid him a visit before the results were announced.

Raila stated on Sunday, January 29, at Jacaranda Grounds that he had evidence that the trio sought his audience and made some requests to him.

Raila denied claims made by Chebukati that a group of Azimio politicians wanted to bribe him in order to change the outcome of the presidential election on August 9.

“Chebukati is saying there are people who tried to bribe him, even his other colleagues Guliye and Molu. I want to ask them what did you come to do at my house? What did they ask me for? Inform them that I have photos and I can expose them,” Raila stated.

Raila stated that they also went to former CS Raphael Tuju’s house and that he has video evidence.

He insisted that Chebukati, the former IEBC chair, should be imprisoned.

Raila was responding to Wafula Chebukati’s claim that officials from the National Security Advisory Council and Tuju tried to bribe them into declaring Raila’s victory.

Former Commissioners, according to them, discouraged further discussion of the same.

The revelation was made during the Tribunal hearing.

The Tribunal was formed to investigate the rebel commissioners.

Raila claimed that the tribunal led by Court of Appeal Judge Aggrey Muchelule was a political witch-hunt against former IEBC vice-chair Juliana Cherera and Co.

“They placed a tribunal to prosecute Cherera and her friends, Irene Masit stated that she would stand trial. I informed Masit that she is like a sheep going to a pack of hyenas but she told me that she would stand trial and face them in order to defend the truth,” he noted.

Wajackoyah: They Stole 2.8 Million Votes From Me

The leader of the Roots party, George Wajackoyah, now claims that 2.8 million votes were stolen from him in the previous election.

Wajackoyah went on to say that he had decided to support Raila Odinga’s efforts to fight for Kenyans’ rights without going into further detail and that he, too, had had his votes taken away.

“Ruto must go. Gachagua must go!” Wajackoyah chanted while speaking at a rally in Jacaranda grounds.

Wajackoyah also claimed that within the Azimio coalition, there were cartels working with Ruto behind Raila’s back.

“I want to warn the cartels who are here. Today you are in Jacaranda, at night you are Sugoi,” he said.

Wajackoyah also pleaded with Raila Odinga to back him up in defending his party, which he claimed Attorney General Justin Muturi wanted to disband due to its marijuana ties.

Wajackoyah and his Agano Party counterpart David Mwaure were among the first to congratulate President William Ruto following the Supreme Court’s validation of his victory in the August 9 General Election.

He had made it clear, however, that he would continue to hold the government accountable now that the decision had been made.

Raila To Ruto: Accept You Lost, Leave State House To Baba

Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio la Umoja, has asked President William Ruto to accept that he did not win the presidential elections in August 2022.

Raila blamed Ruto for the country’s high taxation while speaking to congregants at the Jesus Teaching Ministry in Donholm, Nairobi, on Sunday.

“Accept that you were defeated in the election, leave State House for Baba to get in. We are speaking the truth, we do not want war, and we do not want threats. We have our rights as Kenyans, and it can not be snatched by a hawk, Kenyans deserve a leader that they elected,” he said.

Odinga also likened the current government to the biblical tax collector Zacchaeus, known for his unethical and exploitative practices.

During the rally, Odinga urged Kenyans to resist paying taxes, claiming that they were “punitive” and unjust.

“We ask that all Kenyans demand the removal of these punitive taxes,” Odinga said.

“There will be no taxation without representation,” he added, emphasizing his belief that the government was not truly representing the people’s interests.

Odinga went on to say that he would not be intimidated.

The former prime minister also stated that he would be visiting Kibera residents next week, as well as Machakos and other parts of the country, to spread his opposition agenda before returning to Nairobi for another mega rally.

Raila Tells Off DCI Over IEBC Dossier Probe

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga has dismissed reports that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate his claims of rigging in the 2022 polls.

According to Raila, the truth can only be revealed if Azimio is allowed to scrutinize the Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) servers.

While addressing congregants at the Jesus Teaching Ministry in Donholm, Nairobi on Sunday, the ODM boss said Mohamed Amin cannot investigate such a matter because he is President William Ruto’s “employee”.

“I have seen DCI (Mohamed Amin) saying he wants to conduct an investigation. DCI, you are an employee of Ruto, you can not conduct investigations,” Raila stated.

The DCI boss had written to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission over an alleged dossier by a whistle-blower detailing how Raila was cheated of victory.

“Instructively, the complainants contend that there are various manipulations that point to documentary falsification and outright forgery of the subject documents,” read part of the statement.

He stated that the DCI is investigating the validity and authenticity of the documents in question, and has requested that the IEBC provide Forms 34B, which were used to tally, verify, and declare the results of the presidential elections on August 9, 2022.

Gachagua Urges Ruto To Retire Raila Politics

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stated that the only discussion the Ruto administration can have with opposition leader Raila Odinga is his exit and retirement from politics.

Gachagua stated during an Interdenominational church service at Ole Ntimama Stadium in Narok County that Odinga was pushing for the opportunity to meet with President Ruto to discuss getting accommodated into the government, but that was unlikely to happen.

DP Gachagua urged President Ruto to steer clear from the idea of having a political handshake with the Azimio boss and that he should strictly focus on running his government.

He urged his boss to be firm on denying Raila a handshake, assuring him of his full support if he chooses to heed to his recommendation.

“Do not accept to have a handshake with him, but if you meet with him because he is a Kenyan citizen, you should have only one discussion, to discuss his exit from politics and permanent retirement from the politics of Kenya. That you have our support,’ said Gachagua.

The second-in-command further claimed that Raila’s interest is in forcing the government to have a handshake with him, urging him to stick to his role of keeping the government in check.

“This old man’s father (Oginga Odinga) unnerved Kenyatta, he (Raila) then came and approached Uhuru and put him in a ditch. There will be no handshake, so he should continue to be there (in opposition) and perform oversight,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua made this statement while delegating control of Odinga to other junior members of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“I appreciate Kimani Ichung’wa and Ndindi Nyoro taking the lead in dealing with the senior citizen; now, let run the government alongside the president and Musalia Mudavadi,” he added.

Come We Stay Is Not Marriage, Court Rules

The Supreme Court has ruled that cohabiting couples who do not intend to marry cannot automatically become a married union until they voluntarily wed.

This comes after a lengthy legal battle between respondent Paul Ogari Mayaka and his ex-lover appellant Mary Nyambura Kangara alias Mary Nyambura Paul.

According to court documents, the couple purchased a matrimonial home in Dagoretti during their long cohabitation (1986-2011).

When they divorced, Nyambura filed a claim in court for an equal share of the matrimonial property, but the claim was denied because the resulting cohabitation could not be presumed to be a marriage.

Dissatisfied with the High Court decision, the case was appealed to the Court of Appeal, which ruled that there was a presumption of marriage between the two parties and proceeded to divide the suit property in half, with a share for each.

The case was later heard by the Supreme Court, which determined that because there was no marriage between the appellant and the respondent, the Matrimonial Property Act, Act No. 49 of 2013, did not apply in the case.

According to the act, ownership of matrimonial property vests in the spouses based on their contribution to its acquisition and is divided between the spouses if they divorce or their marriage is otherwise dissolved.

“The Court also made a finding that presumption of a marriage is the exception rather than the rule and that the circumstances in which a presumption of marriage can be upheld, are limited,” read part of the ruling.

“The Court has found there exists relationships where couples cohabit with no intention whatsoever of contracting a marriage; and that a marriage is a voluntary union and that courts cannot impose ‘a marriage’ on unwilling persons.”

However, the Court determined that the parties shared a common intention at the time of purchase of the suit property, resulting in a constructive trust between them.

Since they both contributed to the acquisition, improvement, and maintenance of the suit property, the Court apportioned the property at a 70% to 30% ratio to the appellant.

In addition, the court ruled that, in the future, a marriage party must prove their contribution to the matrimonial property in order to determine their share upon divorce.

Pope Francis Clarifies His Comments On Homosexuality And Sin

Pope Francis has clarified his recent comments about homosexuality and sin, saying he was merely referring to official Catholic moral teaching that teaches that any sexual act outside of marriage is a sin.

And in a note Friday, Francis recalled that even black-and-white teaching is subject to circumstances that might eliminate the sin altogether.

Francis first made the comments in an interview Jan. 24 with The Associated Press, in which he declared that laws criminalizing homosexuality were “unjust” and that “being homosexual is not a crime.”

As he often does, Francis then imagined a conversation with someone who raised the matter of the church’s official teaching, which states that homosexual acts are sinful, or “intrinsically disordered.”

“Fine, but first let’s distinguish between a sin and a crime,” Francis said in the pretend conversation. “It’s also a sin to lack charity with one another.”

His comments calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality were hailed by LGBTQ advocates as a milestone that would help end harassment and violence against LGBTQ persons. But his reference to “sin” raised questions about whether he believed that merely being gay was itself a sin.

The Rev. James Martin, an American Jesuit who runs the U.S.-based Outreach ministry for LGBTQ Catholics, asked Francis for clarification and printed the pope’s handwritten response on the Outreach website late Friday.

In his note, Francis reaffirmed that homosexuality “is not a crime,” and said he spoke out “in order to stress that criminalization is neither good nor just.”

“When I said it is a sin, I was simply referring to Catholic moral teaching, which says that every sexual act outside of marriage is a sin,” Francis wrote in Spanish, underlining the final phrase.

But in a nod to his case-by-case approach to pastoral ministry, Francis noted that even that teaching is subject to consideration of the circumstances, “which may decrease or eliminate fault.”

He acknowledged he could have been clearer in his comments to the AP. But he said he was using “natural and conversational language” in the interview that didn’t call for precise definitions.

“As you can see, I was repeating something in general. I should have said: ‘It is a sin, as is any sexual act outside of marriage.’ This is to speak of ‘the matter’ of sin, but we know well that Catholic morality not only takes into consideration the matter, but also evaluates freedom and intention; and this, for every kind of sin,” he said.

Some 67 countries or jurisdictions worldwide criminalize consensual same-sex sexual activity, 11 of which can or do impose the death penalty, according to The Human Dignity Trust, which works to end such laws. Experts say even where the laws are not enforced, they contribute to harassment, stigmatization and violence against LGBTQ people.

Catholic teaching forbids gay marriage, holding that the sacrament of marriage is a lifelong bond between a man and a woman. It reserves intercourse for married couples while forbidding artificial contraception.

In his decade-long pontificate, Francis has upheld that teaching but has made outreach to LGBTQ people a priority. He has stressed a more merciful approach to applying church doctrine, to accompany people rather than judge them.
