Immigrant Farm Worker Charged With 7 Murders In Northern California Shooting

A 66-year-old immigrant farm worker was formally charged with premeditated murder on Wednesday in the fatal shooting of seven co-workers near San Francisco, the second of two gun rampages in California in recent days in which 18 people were killed.

Chunli Zhao, a Chinese citizen and the lone suspect in Monday’s massacre at two mushroom farms in the seaside town of Half Moon Bay, was formally presented with seven counts of murder and a single count of attempted murder during his first court appearance in nearby Redwood City.

Zhao, wearing red-colored jail garb and enclosed behind a glass panel, was ordered held without bond during a brief hearing before a San Mateo County Superior Court judge. The pudgy defendant, with close-cropped gray hair, was expressionless through the hearing. He was assigned two private defense lawyers; no plea was entered.

The next court proceeding in the case was set for Feb. 16.

A Mandarin-language translator was provided for the defendant, who according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe is a Chinese citizen who has lived in the United States for at least 10 years

After the hearing, Wagstaffe told reporters outside the courthouse that prosecutors have not yet determined Zhao’s precise immigration status, or whether he entered the country legally.

The prosecutor said authorities do have an idea about the suspect’s motives but declined to share any details. Wagstaffe also revealed the existence of one clue, saying a note was found inside Zhao’s car, though he declined to disclose what it said.

The district attorney said Zhao was “cooperative” when initially interviewed by authorities following his arrest and gave “a complete statement.”

Still, the expectation is that Zhao will enter a not-guilty plea as the proceedings progress, “and we want to make sure this man gets a fair trial,” Wagstaffe said.

In addition to eight felony counts, the 10-page criminal complaint alleges “special circumstances,” accusing Zhao of “personally and intentionally” shooting to kill.

Under California law, defendants convicted of murder with “special circumstances” can be eligible for the death penalty, though Governor Gavin Newsom in 2019 declared a moratorium on executions. The state has not put a condemned inmate to death since 2006.

Otherwise, the maximum sentence is life in prison without the possibility of parole, Wagstaffe said.

Late on Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris paid a condolence visit to the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park, where 11 people were killed in a separate rampage at a ballroom dance hall on Saturday night by a gunman who later took his own life.

Harris, a California native, laid flowers at a memorial set up outside the dance studio, and in brief comments to reporters called for Congress to enact tougher national gun-safety measures. She then met privately with victims’ families.

NOT A ‘COPY CAT’

California’s firearm laws are among the strictest in the country, and the two shootings, coming in quick succession, left the state reeling from one of the bloodiest spates of mass gun violence in decades.

Authorities said each of the two killing sprees represented the single greatest loss of life from a single act of violence in Los Angeles and San Mateo counties.

Asked if investigators believed the Half Moon Bay killings were a “copy-cat” crime inspired by the shootings in Monterey Park two days earlier, Wagstaffe said flatly, “No.”

Zhao was taken into custody on Monday evening outside a sheriff’s station, where police said he had driven shortly after the attack on farm workers.

The precise motive for the shooting remained unclear. Zhao had been employed by one of the growers, Mountain Mushroom Farm, and had resided at the property along with some other employees, according to its owners. Authorities said early evidence indicated the bloodshed stemmed from a workplace grievance. The second crime scene, Concord Farms, is about a mile away.

Sheriff Christina Corpus said in a CNN interview that the gunman “went after and pursued” specific victims, even though he had the chance to hurt others and that he was a “co-worker or former co-worker” of the victims at both shooting sites.

She said Zhao was not known to law enforcement before Monday’s bloodshed. CNN and other media outlets have reported Zhao was the subject of a temporary restraining order after a former co-worker accused him of attacking and threatening him in 2013.

Half Moon Bay, a town of 12,000 residents south of San Francisco, is home to both a luxury resort and a low-income farming community. The shooting cast a renewed spotlight on hardships faced by the area’s farm workers, many of them immigrants from Latin America and Asia who often live in labor encampments and toil long hours under poor conditions for extremely low pay.

The killings there unfolded two days after a gunman 380 miles to the south opened fire at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, a club frequented mostly by older patrons of Asian descent in Monterey Park.

In addition to the 11 people killed, nine were wounded in Saturday night’s gunfire, which some survivors and bystanders said they initially mistook for fireworks as the predominantly Asian-American community was celebrating the Lunar New Year.

Authorities said the assailant, Huu Can Tran, 72, drove a short time later to a second dance hall, where that club’s operator disarmed him before he could open fire.

The next morning, Tran shot himself to death behind the wheel of his vehicle as police closed in on him south of Los Angeles.

Although his motive remained unclear, Tran was a known regular of the Star Ballroom. A tenant of a Los Angeles-rental property he owned suggested that Tran may have been nursing a grudge against other patrons.

Both rampages were notable for the suspects’ age, much older than typical in deadly mass shootings that have grown all too commonplace in the United States.

Authorities said both gunmen used a semi-automatic pistols.

Russia’s Lavrov Blasts West In New Africa Tour

The Kremlin’s top diplomat slammed the West and praised Angola’s “balanced position” on international affairs on Wednesday as he pursued an African tour aimed at drumming support for Russia.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on his second visit to Africa in six months, held talks with President Joao Lourenco and his Angolan counterpart Tete Antonio.

His latest trip coincides with that of US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and comes a month after President Joe Biden hosted African leaders at the US-Africa summit in Washington.

Speaking after talks with Lourenco, Lavrov pledged Russia’s “mutual firm commitment to development in all areas” with Angola.

“We will do this despite illegal pressures from the United States and its allies,” he said.

He said was there was “unprecedented pressure of Western countries on the developing states of Asia, Africa and Latin America”.

Echoing President Vladimir Putin previous remarks, he said “the West is acting with the same colonial methods that it used to to exploit the developing continents.”

Lavrov, after he met his Angolan counterpart, earlier said Moscow “appreciates Angola’s balanced position at the United Nations”.

“Good relations between Russia and Angola are not subject to geo-political events, they are historic and based on a spirit of solidarity and support,” he said.

He arrived in Angola after visiting Eswatini and South Africa.

Since independence from Portugal in 1975, Angola has been led by the MPLA, a former Marxist liberation movement with historic ties to the Soviet Union.

But the oil-rich country has moved closer to the West through the years, fostering ties with the United States.

In October Angola voted for the first time to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the United Nations, having abstained in earlier votes.

Africa has become a renewed diplomatic battleground since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly a year ago.

China’s new foreign Minister, Qin Gang, visited Ethiopia, Gabon, Angola, Benin and Egypt earlier this month.

Lavrov last visited the continent in July last year, making stops in Egypt and Ethiopia, among other countries

Eight Missing After Ship Sinks Between Japan, South Korea

Japan and South Korea’s coast guards were searching Wednesday for eight crew from a cargo ship that sank between the two countries, after 14 others were rescued.

“A total of 14 have been rescued,” a spokesman for the Japanese coast guard told AFP.

“We don’t know their condition and nationalities yet,” he added, declining to be named.

He said six of the crew had been rescued by South Korea’s coast guard, which was assisting the operation.

Eleven of those rescued so far were “unconscious”, the Jeju Coast Guard told AFP, adding that the rescued crew members were being transported to Japan’s southwestern Nagasaki.

The Jin Tian sent a distress signal late on Tuesday evening from a position around 110 kilometres (68 miles) west of the remote and uninhabited Danjo islands in far southwestern Japan.

Three private ships were in the area and helped pick up several of the stranded crew members, Japan’s coast guard said.

A Japanese coast guard plane and two ships were at the scene, with additional Japanese and South Korean vessels en route, officials from both countries said.

The ship’s captain used a satellite phone to tell South Korean coast guard officials that he and the crew would abandon the sinking ship in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Jeju Coast Guard said.

Contact with the crew was then lost.

Japan’s government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno confirmed that the country’s coast guard was cooperating with South Korean authorities in the rescue mission.

The accident came as a cold snap hits much of Asia, with daytime temperatures in some of the Japanese islands nearest the rescue site reaching just three degrees Celsius (37 degrees Fahrenheit).

The 6,651-ton Jin Tian is registered in Hong Kong, and the crew on board included 14 Chinese nationals and eight people from Myanmar, Japan’s coast guard said.

In 2020, a cargo ship with 43 crew and 6,000 cattle on board sank off southwestern Japan after being caught up in a typhoon. Two crew survived.

Conflict-Torn DR Congo Gears Up For Pope Visit

(FILES) In this file photo taken on November 29, 2015 Central African Republic interim president Catherine Samba-Panza (R) welcomes Pope Francis (L) upon his arrival in Bangui, Central African Republic. - Pope Francis will head to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan next week, delivering a message of peace and reconciliation to two sub-Saharan African nations plagued by conflict. The 86-year-old pontiff flies to the Congolese capital Kinshasa on January 31, 2023 before heading on February 3, 2023 to Juba, the capital of South Sudan where he will be joined by the leaders of the Anglican Church and the Church of Scotland. In DR Congo’s bustling capital Kinshasa, the faithful are flocking to impromptu market stalls in churchyards to buy t-shirts and wax tissues adorned with the image of Pope Francis, ahead of the pontiff’s visit.

Papal souvenirs have become hot-selling items in the city ahead of the Argentinian pope’s four-day trip to the deeply religious central African country, which begins on January 31.

Many in the Democratic Republic of Congo view the papal visit as a chance to soothe tensions in the east, where M23 rebels have captured swaths of territory since last year and provoked a humanitarian crisis.

Berthe Baleweya, a woman who’d come to Kinshasa’s Notre-Dame du Congo cathedral to buy a Francis-themed wax cloth, told AFP that wearing the pope’s image would be a “great blessing”.

Emmanuelle Wemu, who runs a Catholic aid group, has already bought and tailored her wax print decorated with the pope’s face.

“I expect a message of peace from him, in this moment when the DRC is in turmoil,” she said.

Over one million worshippers are expected to turn out for an open-air mass in Kinshasa’s Ndolo airport on February 1, a sizeable portion in the megacity of over 15 million.

The DRC is a traditionally Catholic nation of over 90 million people, deeply impoverished despite vast mineral wealth.

Conflict in the east

Pope Francis was scheduled to arrive in the DRC last July, but the trip was postponed over health concerns.

Many also speculated that escalating conflict in eastern Congo — where the pope had been due to visit — prompted a rethink.

The M23 rebel group, which is allegedly backed by Rwanda, has waged an offensive against the Congolese military and recently come within several miles of Goma, a commercial hub of over a million people and capital of North Kivu province.

Pope Francis is no longer due to go to eastern Congo, according to his new programme, but he will meet victims of the conflict while in Kinshasa.

Some are disappointed. Gelo Mandela, a youth coordinator in the diocese of Goma, said young people were despairing that the city was no longer on the itinerary. “We were prepared,” he said.

Aid worker Emmanuelle Wemu said she hoped the pope’s visit would bring reconciliation with Rwanda.

Diplomatic relations between the DRC and its smaller neighbour have plunged to rock-bottom since the eruption of the M23 crisis in late 2021. Rwanda denies backing the rebels.

Pope Francis’ security in Kinshasa also remains a concern, notably because of the threat of militias from the east.

The Allied Democratic Forces, which the Islamic State group claims at its affiliate, bombed a Pentecostal church in eastern Congo on January 15, killing 14 people.

The ADF has to date only operated in eastern DRC, over 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) from the capital.

Million-strong mass

A three-day period of prayers — known as a triduum — is planned at the Notre-Dame du Congo cathedral in the run-up to Francis’ arrival.

A vigil will also take place at Ndolo military airport on the night of January 31, ahead of the papal mass there the following morning, according to Father Camille Esika, a cathedral priest.

Between one and 1.5 million people are expected to celebrate mass at the eight-hectare (20-acre) site. Preparatory works are ongoing.

“That day, rain or no rain, there will be an event,” said Jesus-Noel Sheke, the project’s technical coordinator.

Across Kinshasa, banners and signs welcoming the pope already hang from buildings. His visit marks the first papal trip to the country since Pope John Paul II’s in 1985.

Justin-Marie Bayala, a teacher who attended a recent mass at the Notre-Dame du Congo, like many, evoked high hopes.

“We dare to believe that he will bring us lasting peace,” Bayala said.

US Bars Entry For Nigerians ‘Undermining’ Democracy

The United States government has announced a visa ban on some unnamed Nigerians “for undermining the democratic process in a recent Nigerian election”.

In a statement on Wednesday, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken described the action as a reflection of his government’s “commitment to supporting Nigeria’s aspiration to combat corruption and strengthen democracy and the rule of law”.

The senior US diplomat explained that the individuals affected will not be granted visas to enter the US, “under a policy to restrict visas of those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Nigeria”.

He also said that their family members may also be subject to these restrictions.

“Additional persons who undermine the democratic process in Nigeria—including in the lead-up to, during, and following Nigeria’s 2023 elections—may be found ineligible for US visas under this policy,” the statement said further.

Mr Blinken, however, clarified that the visa ban was not targeted at the Nigerian people or the government.

It comes barely two months after the political counsellor at the US embassy in Nigeria, Rolf Olson, made a similar statement.

In the lead up to the Edo and Ondo governorship polls of 19 September and 10 October 2020, the US government had also announced visa restrictions on some individuals.

The country is due to hold general elections on 25 February.

Rwanda Football Probes Verbal Abuse Of Trailblazing Female Ref

Rwanda’s football federation has launched an investigation after fans hurled insults at the woman who made history as one of the first female referees chosen for the men’s World Cup.

Offensive slurs were repeatedly chanted at Salima Mukansanga by fans from Kiyovu Football Club as she refereed their 0-0 draw against Gasogi United on Friday evening in Nyamata south of Kigali.

On Wednesday, the club vowed to name and shame those responsible.

“The Kiyovu sports community will not tolerate anyone who disrespects anyone, especially in sports,” the club said in a statement.

Rwanda’s football federation condemned the abuse and announced late on Tuesday it had launched an investigation of its own.

A government spokeswoman, Yolande Makolo, praised the federation for taking action against “unacceptable behaviour”.

“We are with you @RhadiaSalma,” she posted on Twitter on Wednesday.

Mukansanga was among three women in the list of 36 referees selected by Fifa for the World Cup in Qatar in late 2022.

It was the first time women had been called up for the men’s event, though Mukansanga did not end up officiating a match.

The 34-year-old made history last year by becoming the first woman to referee at the Africa Cup of Nations. She also officiated at the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup in France.

Wolves Sign Goalkeeper Bentley From Bristol City

Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed goalkeeper Daniel Bentley from Bristol City on a two-and-a-half-year deal, with an option for two additional years, the Premier League side said on Wednesday.

The former Bristol City captain will play in the English top division for the first time in his career after spells at Braintree, Southend United and Brentford.

Bentley, 29, is the fifth signing of the January transfer window for Julen Lopetegui’s side and will provide competition for first-choice keeper Jose Sa.

Wolves are 17th in the Premier League and will host Liverpool on 4 February.

Dembele Fires Barca Past Sociedad To Copa Semis

Ousmane Dembele’s strike, capping a brilliant individual display, helped Barcelona beat Real Sociedad 1-0 on Wednesday, and reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

The French forward struck in the 52nd minute to power the record 31-time cup-winners through against 10-man La Real, who had Brais Mendez sent off late in the first half.

Barcelona have enjoyed a strong start to 2023, winning the Spanish Super Cup and moving three points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, and continued it in a pulsating cup clash.

Imanol Alguacil’s Real Sociedad have thrilled in the league, sitting third, but were missing veteran playmaker David Silva and Mikel Merino through injury.

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, on his 43rd birthday, guided his team to a nervy victory, thanks to Dembele.

The coach defended Dembele when taking over at Barcelona in November 2021, saying that with hard work he could be the best winger in the world.

“The most important thing is having the mentality that you will make the difference at Barcelona,” Xavi told reporters on Wednesday.

“For me, Dembele is still one of the best in the world in his position. I am happy for him because he’s a good guy and a good professional.

“He has turned things around and that is not easy at Barca.”

The Catalans came out of the blocks quickly and Robert Lewandowski had an effort blocked after the electric Dembele found him.

At the other end Takefusa Kubo crashed a shot against the crossbar, as the game ebbed and flowed in entertaining fashion.

Barcelona fans frequently showed their ire towards referee Jesus Gil Manzano in the first half — he was the official who sent off Lewandowski against Osasuna in November, resulting in a ban which the Pole is still serving in La Liga.

However it was Real Sociedad midfielder Mendez who was sent off at Camp Nou on Wednesday, just before half-time.

The Spaniard lunged in on Sergio Busquets, catching his compatriot with his studs above the ankle.

Decisive Dembele

Early in the second half, Barcelona broke the deadlock when Jules Kounde slid Dembele in down the right wing and he drove into the box and lashed the ball past Alex Remiro at the near post.

It was the French forward’s third goal in six games and another sign of his superb form under Xavi.

“It’s hard to stop a player at such a level, in form and having a day like this,” said Alguacil.

“We made things too easy for him in the first half … I think we were afraid. If you give half a metre to Dembele, you’re screwed.”

Now that Dembele has found a coach who believes in him — and signed a new deal last summer — he has become vital at Barcelona.

“(Dembele) had a great game, we know what a great player he is,” Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo told Movistar.

“He helps us with goals, he’s taking good decisions, that’s the most important thing, something that maybe was tricky for him at the beginning.”

Real Sociedad, despite their numerical disadvantage, battled well and should have levelled when Alexander Sorloth fired over from only a couple of yards out.

The Norwegian striker had netted five goals in his previous six games and looked aghast at his miss.

Gavi struck the bar after more good work by Dembele as Barcelona tried and failed to seal the win with a second goal.

“There are a lot of games that we can put to bed earlier, we will try to work on that,” said Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde.

“We are in very good form and we just have to kill off these situations.”

Barcelona survived two late scares after Marc-Andre ter Stegen gave the ball away but then saved from Robert Navarro and produced another fine stop to deny Jon Ander Olasagasti.

Elsewhere Osasuna earned a 2-1 win over Sevilla in extra-time to reach the semis for the first time since 2005, when they finished as runners-up to Real Betis.

On Thursday Real Madrid host Atletico Madrid and Valencia welcome Athletic Club in the other quarter-finals.

Gareth Bale To Play In PGA Tour Event After Retiring From Football

Former Wales captain Gareth Bale has announced he will play in a PGA Tour event just weeks after retiring from professional football.

Bale said he will compete in February’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California.

The 33-year-old retired earlier this month as Wales’ most-capped male player and record men’s goalscorer.

“Delighted to announce I will be playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at the start of next month! Let’s go,” he posted on social media on Monday.

A five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Bale’s relationship with the Spanish giants suffered when he was pictured with a banner that read ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid.

In that order’ while on international duty with his country in 2019.

There will be 156 amateurs participating at Pebble Beach and the same number of professionals, including US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, world number five Patrick Cantlay and three-time major winner Jordan Spieth.
