Mama Lucy Hospital Staff To Take The Stand On Baby Trafficking Charges

Two officers who were accused of trafficking children at Mama Lucy Hospital have a case to answer.

Milimani Law Courts Principal Magistrate Esther Kimilu found two employees of Nairobi Metropolitan Services charged with trafficking babies from Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital with a case to answer.

The two suspects, Makallah Fred Leparan and Selina Awuor Adundo are charged with stealing three infants from Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital on diverse dates between March and November 2020.

The three infants were aged: 8 days, 2 weeks and 2 months respectively.

In reading the ruling, the Magistrate said the prosecution had proved their case beyond reasonable doubt that indeed the two NMS employees, knowingly caused the three children to be in need of care and protection by failing to protect them.=

According to the Law, after this ruling, the two suspects will take the stand on March 7,2023 to prove their innocence before the court retires to write Judgement.

Mr. Makallah Fred Leparan informed the Court that during his defense, he will give unsworn evidence with his co-accused Selina Awuor Adundo choosing to give sworn evidence.

According to Mr Magaka, a BBC reporter and the key prosecution witness in the case, the three babies had been abandoned at the Hospital by their mothers and were later taken by the administration for treatment and care.

In the first instance, video was played in Court during the hearing of the case.

Mr. Leparan is seen going into the hospital, and then coming out to meet a woman, who is then handed the baby by a nurse before she drives off.

The deal was sealed after several meetings between the journalist, and Mr Leparan.

Mr Leparan allegedly received three bundles of Sh100,000 each from the buyers. Before handing over the baby boy to the woman, Mr Leparan had asked the woman what gender she preferred, to which she replied that gender did not matter. Mr Leparan was asked by the BBC reporter who had pretended to be a buyer whether the baby was healthy, and he replied that he was, thus “confirming his intent to steal and sell the child”.

Two Die As Car Plunges Into A Dam In Juja

Police in Juja, Kiambu County, are looking into the circumstances surrounding a car sinking into a dam, which resulted in the deaths of two people.

According to eyewitnesses, the victims, a man and a woman, were in their vehicle, a Nissan X-Trail, when it gently moved and sunk in the dam.

It remains unclear what led to the car plunging into the river without the two attempting to hop out.

By last evening, rescuers had managed to recover the body of the female victim, while efforts to recover the body of the male victim and the vehicle were still ongoing.

Martin Ngugi, a fire officer from the county, told journalists that the vehicle that is still inside the dam had two occupants. The vehicle, he said, has already been spotted but will be recovered after the male victim’s body is removed from the dam.

“We only managed to retrieve the body of the woman. She had tried to swim and had moved towards the bank but didn’t make it. We have already located where the car is and the man’s body,” Ngugi said.

The man’s body was finally retrieved on Wednesday and taken to General Kago Funeral Home together with the woman’s body.

The vehicle was yet to be retrieved from the dam as of the time of publishing this story.

Murera Ward MCA, Ngatha Wambiri, spoke at the scene and revealed that the Ward has five dams, some of which have been dangerous to locals and should now be fenced to protect lives.

“I’m urging the national government, or even the county government, to fence off the five dams in Juja. Many people usually come here to relax. However, where alcohol is involved, judgement is usually impaired, leading to unfortunate incidents that could have been avoided,” he said.

Revelers have been thronging the area for “park and chill” activities while indulging in merry-making.

Rescue efforts are still underway, led by the Kiambu County rescue team and divers in collaboration with the police.

The victims’ identities have not yet been released, and the cause of the accident is still being investigated.

WhatsApp To Allow Voice Notes On Status Updates

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will let users upload a 30-second voice note as their status.

The feature is currently being tested by a selection of beta participants and seems to be rolling out to more.

Voice notes are very popular with some WhatsApp users, it allows them to effectively leave a voicemail on a whim, and share it with a group, when necessary.

WhatsApp’s current Status feature allows users to add text that will appear for 24 hours or share an image with a caption, that will also disappear in a day’s time, a bit like an Instagram Story.

Now, though, it looks as though users will be able to share a voice note of up to 30 seconds using this feature.

The new feature was found by WABetaInfo, in the latest Android beta of WhatsApp, version 2.23.2.8.

A screenshot shows the usual screen when posting a status, but now features a microphone icon in the bottom right-hand corner.

Tapping this icon will allow users to record a voice note, which can then be shared as their status.

Beta testers are seeing this feature after installing the latest update, but the report suggests that more users will get the feature in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately, there is no further information at this time, and we don’t know if or when this feature will make it to the iOS version.

WhatsApp has also been testing a feature that will enable users to migrate their chat history between Android phones.

World’s Oldest Known Person, French Nun, Dies At 118

French nun Sister André, the world’s oldest known person, died on Tuesday at the age of 118 in the southern city of Toulon.

The city’s mayor, Hubert Falco, announced the news of her death on Twitter, writing that “it is with immense sadness and emotion that I learnt tonight of the passing of the world’s oldest person #SisterAndré.”

The nun’s spokesman, David Tavella, said she died on Tuesday at 2 a.m. local time and lived near Toulon. “There is great sadness, but she wanted it to happen, it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it is freedom,” Tavella said.

Born as Lucile Randon on February 11, 1904, Sister André dedicated most of her life to religious service, according to a statement released by Guinness in April 2022.

Before becoming a Catholic nun, she looked after children during World War II and then spent 28 years caring for orphans and elderly people at a hospital.

She was also the oldest nun to ever live, according to Guinness.

When she turned 118 in 2022, the nun received a handwritten birthday note from French President Emmanuel Macron – the 18th French president of her lifetime. There have also been 10 different Popes presiding over the Catholic Church since she was born.

She became the world’s eldest following the death of Kane Tanaka, a Japanese woman previously certified as the world’s oldest person, who died at the age of 119 on April 19.

The title of the oldest person ever recorded also belongs to a French woman. Born on February 21, 1875, Jeanne Louise Calment’s life spanned 122 years and 164 days, according to the Guinness World Records statement.

Dozens Left Homeless As Fire Razes Mukuru Slums

More than 1,000 households spent the night outside in the cold after a fire in a Mukuru slum on Tuesday night gutted more than 300 houses and reduced property worth millions of shillings to shells.

According to Starehe deputy commissioner John Kisang, the fire started around 6 p.m. and was extinguished around 9 p.m.

Kisang went on to say that the tragedy occurred in the Mukuru-Maasai slum in Nairobi South Ward’s South B division.

He did, however, say that detectives led by the area DCIO Felix Nyamai Kithuku have begun an investigation to determine what caused the fire.

Sylvester Maithya, the slum chairman, told reporters that due to lack of access, it was difficult for county government fire engines to reach the scene of the incident.

Six fire engines battled the fire, while several water bowsers supplied water to the engines.

South B Youth leader Rodrigues Lunalo, who was present at the scene, said the vehicles’ lack of access was due to landgrabbers who encroached on all road reserves in the area.

According to the victims who spoke to journalists, the fire started in one house while the tenant was away, despite claims that it was caused by a candle that caught fire and set the curtain on fire.

The fire quickly spread due to strong winds before spreading to other homes.

Panic also spread among the nearby Hazina estate, with residents fearing that the fire will spread to the estate.

Leaders and residents lauded the youths for their bravery in fighting the overwhelming fire basins, jerricans, and buckets fetching water from the Ngong River.

“Youths did a commendable work as they volunteered to put out the fire using water from Ngong River, water pipes while their colleagues were demolishing other houses to prevent the fire from spreading further,” Ms Mary Kiminza Charles remarked.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Among 16 People Killed In Kyiv Helicopter Crash

Ukraine’s interior minister was among 16 people, including two children, who were killed when a helicopter crashed near a kindergarten outside the capital Kyiv, officials said Wednesday.

In a video that circulated online from the aftermath of the incident, cries could be heard at the scene which was consumed by fire.

There were no immediate details on the cause of the crash.

“In total, 16 people are currently known to have died,” the head of national police, Igor Klymenko, said.

Among the dead are several top officials of the interior ministry including Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky and his first deputy minister, Yevgeniy Yenin, he said.

Monastyrsky, a 42-year-old father of two, was appointed interior minister in 2021.

Twenty-two people were hospitalised including 10 children.

Officials said that at the time of the crash children and employees were in the kindergarten.

Medics and police were working at the scene.

The scene of the crash in the town of Brovary is located some 20 kilometres (12 miles) northeast of Kyiv.

Russian and Ukrainian forces fought for control of Brovary in the early stages of Moscow’s invasion until Russia’s troops withdrew in early April.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops to pro-Western Ukraine on February 24 last year.

The crash came on the heels of a tragedy that saw 45 people including six children die when a Russian missile struck a residential building in the eastern city of Dnipro at the weekend.

Tanzania Media Silent On National Killed In Ukraine

Leading Tanzanian newspapers have largely ignored a video circulating on Twitter of a memorial for a national who was allegedly killed in Bakhmut, Ukraine, last October while fighting for Russia’s Wagner Group.

Tarimo Neves Raymond was a student in Russia and was reportedly recruited by Wagner from a prison in Moscow.

The video shows men in military fatigues holding candles around a casket.

A portrait picture of Raymond, two medals and a certificate are placed on the casket draped with a Wagner flag.

None of the major Tanzanian news outlets have so far carried the story and there has been no comment from the government’s official channels.

Last September a Zambian national died in Ukraine while fighting for Wagner, while several “Black Russians” from the Central African Republic are believed to have been recruited by the paramilitary company.

On 1 January, Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin purportedly flaunted a mercenary from Cote d’Ivoire who had joined fighting in Ukraine.
