5 Prominent Kenyans Whose Multi-Million Property Were Raided By Goons

Written by Lisa Murimi

Several prominent figures in Kenya, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, have recently faced disturbances caused by agitated youth allegedly incited for disruptive actions.

These politically motivated incidents have often resulted in property damage and nationwide demonstrations, raising concerns about societal stability.

The targets of these attacks have included high-ranking officials like Raila Odinga and a former aide to Daniel Moi. Properties worth millions of Kenyan Shillings have been destroyed, with the most costly being a Ksh4 billion company set on fire.

Among those affected are:

  1. Uhuru Kenyatta: In March, during nationwide protests led by Raila Odinga, a group of youth invaded Kenyatta’s Northlands farm, making off with around 1,400 valuable sheep and causing extensive property damage.
  2. Raila Odinga: In March 2023, a mob attacked Raila Odinga’s East African Spectre Company, damaging property and targeting the company’s general manager.
  3. Paras Shah: In August, a youth group set fire to Megvel Cartons Limited, owned by Paras Shah, amid a land dispute with a rival company.
  4. Kipchoge Keino: Youth encroached on an Eldoret ranch linked to athletics legend Kipchoge Keino, claiming ownership and demanding title deeds.
  5. Benjamin Kipkulei: Squatters invaded the land of Benjamin Kipkulei, a former aide to President Daniel Arap Moi, seeking farming rights.

These incidents highlight the challenges of political unrest and land disputes in Kenya, prompting calls for intervention and resolution to ensure stability and protect valuable investments.

US, Canada Recall Kenyan Made Baby Jeans Over Choking Hazard

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled over 100,000 pairs of jeans made in Kenya for babies and distributed at retail outlets in America.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), due to various production flaws, baby jeans are harmful and hazardous to wearers.

The garment items include metal snaps that might come off and suffocate infants and young children according to reports.

Retail establishments have been directed to contact the parents of the item purchasers and make the return process as simple as possible in response to the identified safety issues.

Each pair of the 100,000 pieces sold for approximately Ksh3,600 (USD25), with 97,400 of those sales occurring in the US and 1,800 in Canada.

Clothes exported to the US are manufactured at garment companies operating in the Export Processing Zones (EPZ) in Nairobi and Machakos counties.

The clothes are exported under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) arrangements that give garment manufacturers in Africa preferential access to the US market.

Emmanuel Juma Appointed Foreign Affairs Head Of Communication

Renowned journalist Emmanuel Juma has been appointed as the head of communication in the office of the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.

“Mr Juma brings a wealth of experience in all media areas and has the personality, creativity and drive to enable the Ministry communicate its Foreign and Diapora positions more effectively,’ said CS Alfred Mutua.

Airtel Money Raises Daily Transaction Limit to Ksh 500,000

Airtel Money users will now be able to send up to Sh500,000 using their accounts after the mobile money company got regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) to increase the daily limit.

This will be a sizeable increase from a Sh300,000 ceiling previously.

“We are elated about the CBK’s decision as this change will significantly empower our customers and partners by providing them with the flexibility to conduct larger transactions and manage their finances more effectively,” Airtel Money (K) Ltd Managing Director Anne Kinuthia-Otieno said.

A higher limit is good for businesses and government agencies, among others, as it will increase transactable amounts thus boosting businesses.

“This is a positive step as it has very positive economic benefits for the Kenyan economy,” Kinuthia-Otieno added.

“Businesses can now conduct their operations more conveniently, efficiently, and consumers can access a wider range of goods and services contributing to economic growth, job creation, and improved financial stability in Kenya.”

However, Airtel users will only be able to send a maximum of Sh150,000 at a time.

Only yesterday, Safaricom also increased its limit to Sh500,000 after getting a nod from the CBK.

Chelsea Agree To Sell Ziyech To Galatasaray

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sell winger Hakim Ziyech to Galatasaray.

The Morocco international is now expected to undergo a medical with the Turkish Super Lig club.

The 30-year-old has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge and has previously seen moves to Paris St-Germain and Saudi Pro League club, Al Nassr, fall through.

Ziyech has made 107 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions since joining them in 2020 for £33.3m.

The former Ajax player was an unused substitute during the Blues Champions League triumph in 2021 and was a key member of the Morocco side that became the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals at Qatar 2022.

However, he has become a peripheral figure at Chelsea amid a significant outlay on players totalling around £900m since American investor Todd Boehly and his Clearlake consortium took over in May 2022.

Ziyech was not involved in Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the USA earlier this summer and he was also absent from their matchday squad for their 1-1 draw against Liverpool at the weekend, having not been given a squad number for the new Premier League season.

England Reach World Cup Final Despite Kerr Stunner

England reached the Women’s World Cup final for the first time with a 3-1 win over Australia on Wednesday, breaking the hearts of the host nation and setting up an all-European title decider against Spain.

Ella Toone drove England’s opener into the corner of the net in the 36th minute to silence the crowd of 75 784 but Australia captain Sam Kerr brought them back into it with a stunning run and strike from 25 metres out in the 64th minute.

The Matildas defence failed to deal with a long ball over the top seven minutes later, however, and Lauren Hemp nipped in to drill it into the net.

Kerr came close to scoring an equaliser but came up short and Alessia Russo powered home England’s third four minutes from time to send the European champions, semifinal losers at the last two World Cups, into Sunday’s final.
