ODM to hold NDC meeting on March 27 as coalition talks intensifies

ODM leader Dr Oburu Odinga has said the party will engage in negotiations with like-minded political formations ahead of the 2027 General Election, arguing that ODM’s path to power lies in strategic coalitions.

Speaking in Migori during the party’s Linda ground rally at Posta Grounds, Odinga said he has been mandated by ODM to initiate talks with parties interested in forming the next government.

He said ODM is also exploring possible discussions with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) over a power-sharing arrangement, assuring supporters that the party’s 10-point agenda will be reviewed and fully implemented.

ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga said the party is open to any viable coalition that would position it to take power in 2027, warning that failure to implement the 10-point agenda could create political bottlenecks.

Leaders including Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina also spoke at the rally, with Junet signalling interest in the deputy president’s seat in any future coalition.

ODM is expected to convene a National Delegates Council (NDC) meeting on March 27 to review progress and chart the way forward.

Wanga and Odinga dismissed claims that the party’s agenda and engagement with UDA could jeopardise the broad-based government arrangement, insisting ODM remains focused and united.

The National Police Service (NPS), officers acting on a tip off nabbed the the suspect inside an apartment being used as a hub for the storage and distribution of illegal drugs.

A further search of the residence led to the recovery of 316 rolls and 105 sachets of suspected cannabis, each weighing approximately 1.5 grams.

“In addition, several sachets containing a white powdery substance suspected to be a narcotic drug were found, pending forensic analysis to confirm its composition,” NPS noted.

Thirty four sachets of rolling papers and foreign currency in different denominations believed to be the proceeds of the suspected illegal trade were also recovered.

The suspect was taken into custody, and all recovered items were secured as exhibits to support ongoing investigations.

Bodies of 6 dead in Nandi helicopter crash taken to MTRH Eldoret

The bodies of six people who died in a tragic chopper crash on Saturday evening, among them Emurua Dikir Member of Parliament Jonathan Ngeno, have been taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) morgue in Eldoret County.

MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa confirmed the hospital received the six bodies, noting that they were burnt beyond recognition, urging the public and bereaved families to remain patient as identification, and dressing of the bodies is underway.

Leaders from across the North Rift and neighbouring regions converged at MTRH to mourn the victims and call for calm as investigations begin.

Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei cautioned against speculation, urging the public to allow investigators to establish the cause of the crash. He also appealed to pilots to exercise extra caution during the ongoing rainy season.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii described the loss as deeply painful, and said the county stands with the affected families and the Kipsigis community. Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wesley Rotich and Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang also sent messages of condolence.

Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, who visited the MTRH morgue to view the bodies, said he had spoken with Jonathan Ngeno earlier on the morning of the incident. According to Governor Ntutu, Ngeno informed him that he was heading out and that they would meet later.

The Narok governor urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that the government has committed to conducting thorough investigations to establish what happened.

Several legislators from the region were present at the hospital, echoing calls for patience, unity and cooperation with investigators as authorities work to determine the cause of the chopper crash.

The helicopter crashed and burst into flames on the edge of Chepkieb Forest in Mosop, Nandi County, at about 4.45pm, moments after attempting to take off from a makeshift landing site near the forest, following what witnesses described as poor visibility caused by ongoing rains in the area.

According to residents, the aircraft had earlier made an emergency landing at around 4pm as weather conditions deteriorated. The pilot is said to have briefly engaged herders near the site in conversation while assessing the situation.

All six people on board, including the pilot, are believed to have died on the spot. The aircraft had reportedly ferried five passengers en route from Endebess before the crash.

President William Ruto eulogised the late MP as focused, vocal and fearless, noting that he stood firmly for justice and equity. He said Ng’eno would be remembered for the tangible development gains achieved during his tenure and for his strong support of local talent, particularly in the music industry.

“My friend, Mheshimiwa Ng’eno, was a progressive and devoted servant of the people who worked tirelessly on behalf of the residents of Emurua Dikirr, Narok County,” the President said.

Deputy President Kindiki equally paid glowing tribute to the fallen lawmaker, describing him as a dear friend, a courageous leader and a committed member of the ruling party.

“My prayers go to the family and constituents of my dear friend Johana Ng’eno… following his demise in a tragic helicopter crash earlier this evening,” Kindiki said.

Governors vow to boycott Senate accounts committee summons in escalating standoff

The Council of Governors has refused to budge in its face-off with the Senate of Kenya, maintaining that county leaders will not attend sessions of the County Public Accounts Committee.

The decision defies Senate Speaker Amason Kingi’s directive requiring all governors to appear before the committee to account for public spending.

The standoff played out during a Senate retreat in Naivasha, where both sides maintained hardline positions following heated exchanges.

The impasse centres on the County Public Accounts Committee chaired by Moses Kajwang. Governors have refused to appear before the committee until the Senate takes action against four senators accused of extortion and intimidation.

In a letter to the Speaker, Council of Governors chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi stated that governors will continue appearing before other Senate committees, but will boycott the Public Accounts Committee until their concerns are addressed.

“We have no problem being oversighted by the Senate but it boils down to conduct. It is an issue that I would not want to get into here but it is a live situation,” stated Ahmed Abdullahi, Council of Governors Chair.

A meeting scheduled between the Council of Governors and Senate leadership was cancelled by Amason Kingi, who cited the boycott as a breach of conditions set for engagement.

“The proposed engagement were pegged on the express condition that governors invited by the said committees would continue to appear and honour summons when required,” stated Amason Kingi, Senate Speaker.

Kingi accused governors of undermining transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, despite the Senate’s role in securing equitable revenue allocations to counties, including Ksh.415 billion in the last financial year.

“They have been persistent to seek Senate’s support to seek enhanced revenue but when it comes to equitable share while resisting oversight on expenditure, the Senate leadership is open for engagement but will firmly resist any effort to circumvent constitutional oversight,” stated Amason Kingi, Senate Speaker.

The Speaker also raised concern over absenteeism among senators, revealing that 48 Senate sittings had been adjourned in the past year due to lack of quorum.

“The adjournment of 48 meetings for lack of quorum must be of great concern to us. Legislative responsibility demands presence, preparedness and prioritisation,” stated Amason Kingi, Senate Speaker.

The remarks were made during the Senate retreat in Naivasha.

The standoff now raises questions over who will back down first in the escalating dispute between governors and senators, a power struggle that appears to lack a clear resolution framework.

Blind refugee found dead in New York after being released by immigration authorities

BBC -A nearly-blind, non-English-speaking refugee from Myanmar has been found dead in upstate New York after being released from federal immigration custody.

Nurul Amin Shah Alam was found dead on Tuesday, days after US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) dropped him off at a coffee shop miles from his home in Buffalo, where temperatures have been below freezing.

Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan called Shah Alam’s death “deeply disturbing” and called for an investigation.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees CBP, said the man had accepted a courtesy ride to the shop and showed “no signs of distress, mobility issues, or disabilities requiring special assistance” when he was dropped off.

The department said that the coffee shop was closer to his home compared to being released “directly from the Border Patrol station” and it was determined to be “a warm, safe location”.

The Washington Post posted a video from outside the Tim Horton’s coffee shop where he is thought to have been dropped off. It is date-stamped 19 February appears to show Shah Alam walking by and not going inside. The Washington Post reported it was recorded after the restaurant had closed.

The shop closes at 19:00 local time, according to its posted hours. Weather reports from that night show the temperature was forecast around 36F (2.2C)

Shah Alam’s cause of death has not been made public and the Buffalo Police Department is investigating what happened to the 56-year-old.

He was found dead on 24 February, nearly 6mi (9.7km) from the coffee shop, according to Buffalo police.

A passerby called 911 to report seeing a man wearing khaki pants and a dark parka who did not appear to be moving or breathing, although he had been moving when she had walked by three hours earlier, police said.

Before his death, Shah Alam had been in local police custody for nearly a year on assault and weapons charges related to an incident in which two police officers were injured, according to police. He had been released on bail after reaching a plea deal, according to local media reports.

US immigration authorities had placed a detainer on him as part of that case, which is a request for someone who is a non-US citizen to be taken into their custody should they be released.

According to a timeline provided by the Buffalo Police Department, Shah Alam’s lawyer reported him missing on 22 February, saying he had been released to federal authorities on 19 February and had no identification. Shah Alam’s son told police he believed his father had been held by federal authorities starting 19 February.

Reuters reported that CBP released him from their custody after finding he entered the US as a refugee and could not be deported legally.

Shah Alam’s family has said they weren’t notified of when or where Shah Alam had been dropped off.

In a news conference, Mayor Ryan said that Border Patrol, DHS and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “don’t know what they’re doing” and offered a blistering summary of what happened to the refugee, who reportedly entered the US in December 2024.

“The Border Patrol officers had no protocol of what to do with the disabled man who doesn’t speak English, who is confused and lost,” he said. “And you know what they did? They dropped him at a closed coffee shop.”

One of Shah Alam’s children, Mohamad Faisal, said in a text message to Reuters that their family was not notified about his release at the coffee shop.

“Nobody told me or my family or attorney where my dad was dropped off,” Faisal told Reuters.

He said his father’s arrest last year was due to a misunderstanding with police officers. His father, he said, had been out for a walk and was using a curtain rod as a walking stick. When Shah Alam got lost and walked onto the property of a Buffalo resident, they called the police.

Shah Alam, who doesn’t speak English, could not understand police commands to drop the curtain rod and he was arrested, Faisal said.

Video from body-worn cameras released by Buffalo police shows the man holding two black rods when officers appear, and repeatedly saying “sorry.” When he does not drop the rods after repeated requests to do so, the officer deploy tasers, and he walks forward swinging the rods until one officer wrestles him to the ground.

Shah Alam was excited to come back to his son’s house to “eat home-cooked food” and “be united with the rest of [his] family,” Faisal said.

The family are Arakan Rohingya refugees, he added.

Local officials are now asking for an investigation into Shah Alam’s death.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said her office is “reviewing our legal options”.

“Nurul Amin Shah Alam fled genocide and came to this country in search of safety and opportunity,” she said in a statement. “Instead, his life was tragically cut short. No one who comes here seeking refuge should be left in harm’s way.”

Former Presidential Aspirant Reuben Kigame faults Easy Coach after narrowly escaping accident in Vihiga County

Former Presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame has called out Easy Coach company after escaping a near-death accident on Sunday morning along the Kapsabet-Chavakali road in Vihiga County.

According to Kigame, an Easy Coach bus attempted to overtake another car while speeding, at around 5:00 am, forcing his driver to swerve off the road to avoid a head-on collision.

He blamed Easy Coach for allowing a rogue driver to operate their bus, further blaming Vihiga County and all roads authorities among them the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) for allowing the section of the busy road to exist in a deplorable state.

“Easy Coach you wanted to kill us this morning. You come with full lights aiming at us and you drive us into the ditch. Shame on you as a company, shame on your drivers, Vihiga county, the Kenya Highways Authortiy and the NTSA. If it was not God I would be dead meat together with my friends here,” he said on his X account.

“The contractor, county and highways authority are responsible for the condition of the road at Shiru where the incident occurred. Praise be to God who has spared our lives and many thanks to Mr Manasseh Kijo and his young men that helped us out of that ditch.”

Kigame said that he was travelling to speak at the University of Eldoret.

At least 20 killed after military plane carrying banknotes crashes in Bolivia

At least 20 people have been killed and others injured after a Bolivian air force cargo plane crashed in the western city of El Alto, the country’s authorities say.

The incident happened at 18:15 local time (22:15 GMT) on Friday as the plane was arriving at El Alto’s airport from the city of Santa Cruz, aviation officials said. It reportedly skidded off the runway and hit nearby vehicles.

The defence ministry later confirmed its C-130 Hercules was involved and that it had been transporting banknotes to the Central Bank of Bolivia. There were eight people aboard the plane, the air force commander said.

Police fired tear gas to disperse crowds allegedly trying to take the scattered banknotes.

Firefighters had given an earlier death toll of at least 15.

Video footage showed the plane on the ground and badly damaged vehicles. In other videos, people could be seen running away from the tear gas and police officers, some holding shields, forming a line. Some in the crowds are seen throwing rocks.

“While news crews were covering the accident, individuals attempting to steal the transported money attacked the press with unusual violence,” the National Association of Journalists of Bolivia said in a statement.

It said a mobile TV unit was “directly targeted”, while other journalists “were attacked with stones, suffering serious injuries while carrying out their work”.

The government-run Bolivian News Agency reported that at least a dozen people were arrested for stealing banknotes.

“I want to make it clear to those who are trying to take money from the plane involved in this tragedy that this money has no legal value since it has not been issued by the Central Bank and does not have a serial number, and that attempting to use this money is a crime,” the Minister of Defence, Marcelo Salinas, said.

“We also ask all those who are engaging in acts of vandalism in this area to refrain from doing so and to respect the mourning and grief we are experiencing at this difficult time.”

Bolivia’s Air Force commander Sergio Lora confirmed there were eight crew members on board the plane “including cargo personnel and flight crew”.

Bolivia’s health ministry said 31 people were injured in the incident. It also issued an urgent appeal for blood donations.

El Alto International Airport was temporarily closed following the crash.

“My sister told me that she was in the car when the plane crashed. The plane’s tire fell on the car, and my sister was injured because the impact of the tire hit her on the head, so we rushed her to the hospital,” a man told the Reuters news agency.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, but some witnesses said the weather at the time was treacherous.

“A heavy hailstorm” was falling and “there was lightning” when the plane went down,” a woman whose car was struck by the aircraft wreckage told the AFP news agency.

An investigation into the incident is under way.

Gunmen attack police station in Kakamega, kill one officer, injure two others and steal two rifles

Armed assailants attacked Musanda Police Station in Mumias West, Kakamega County, on Friday night, leaving three officers and a civilian injured and stealing two G3 rifles loaded with ammunition.

Police Constable Brian Kipngetich, in a report recorded at 9pm, said that while inside his house within the patrol base, six individuals riding on two motorcycles arrived at the station claiming that their motorcycle had been stolen at Sigomere.

Shortly after making the report, a commotion was heard at the police station, followed by a gunshot. Kipngetich said one of the attackers remarked that “there is another one” before he was shot on the left side of the head and retreated back to his house.

The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and other officers then responded to the scene at Mukhuwa Location, and found Corporal Richard Utolo unconscious, lying in a pool of blood with a visible wound on the chin. He was rushed to the hospital and is presently admitted in a serious condition.

Kipngetich sustained a slight head injury, while Police Constable Finace Abura suffered a wound to the left ear. His wife, Mary Omondi, sustained injuries to the head and right hand during the incident.

Police reported that two G3 rifles were stolen during the attack, each rifle loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition.

The police officers were taken to Bungoma West Hospital where they were admitted and are receiving treatment.

The scene was visited by the Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC) and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) Mumias West.

Blood stains were observed in the officers’ houses, and two crowbars believed to have been used to break into a steel box were recovered.

Police said a search for the stolen rifles and spent cartridges is ongoing, as investigations are continuing.

KQ temporarily suspends all flights to Dubai after the closure of the United Arab Emirates airspace.

Kenya Airways has announced the temporary suspension of its flights to Dubai and Sharjah following the closure of the United Arab Emirates airspace.

In a customer update issued on February 28, 2026, the airline said the suspension will remain in place until further notice, citing safety concerns for both passengers and crew.

As a result of the disruption, the airline confirmed the cancellation of flight KQ310, KQ305 and all freighter flights operating on the affected routes.

The national carrier apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured affected customers that it would reach out directly to offer necessary assistance.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and understanding. We will communicate and engage directly with affected customers and provide them with the necessary assistance,” the airline stated.

Passengers were advised to regularly check the latest flight updates through the airline’s website, mobile application or customer care channels.

The disruption follows escalating regional tensions between Israel and Iran.

On Saturday morning, the United States and Israel launched missile strikes against Iran, triggering swift retaliation.

Despite ongoing negotiations with the United States over its nuclear programme, Iran vowed a harsh response and began carrying out retaliatory strikes targeting Israel, as well as several Gulf nations hosting US military assets, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.

Beyond the UAE, at least eight countries have closed their airspace due to the conflict, among them Iran, Israel, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.

Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei found dead in rubble, says Israel

Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, was killed in US and Israeli air strikes on Tehran, intelligence officials have said.

The ayatollah’s body was reportedly recovered from rubble and riddled with shrapnel wounds after a “major combat operation” launched by Donald Trump to try to topple the Iranian regime.

Documentation of the successful assassination – in the form of photographs – has been presented to Benjamin Netanyahu and senior Israeli defence officials.

Israel carried out a massive strike on Khamenei’s compound in the opening salvo of attacks on Iran on Saturday morning.

It was also reported that Mr Trump, the US president, was shown the same image of Khamenei’s body after it was found by Iranian authorities at his Tehran compound.

The Israeli prime minister had previously said: “Signs are increasing that Khamenei is no longer with us.”

However, a spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry insisted the ayatollah was “safe and sound”, although Khamenei has not been seen in public since the strikes began.

Following the strikes, Tehran responded by firing waves of ballistic missiles at US bases in Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, and striking the US Navy 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain.

Trump: I think the ayatollah is dead

Donald Trump has said he believes Iran’s Supreme Leader is dead.

“We feel that that is a correct story,” he said, following reports of Ali Khamenei’s death.

Asked about the ayatollah’s replacement, he told NBC News: “I don’t know, but at some point they’ll be calling me to ask who I’d like… I’m only being a little sarcastic when I say that.”

The US president said “most” of Iran’s leadership has been killed in the waves of American and Israeli attacks today.

“We’ve inflicted tremendous damage. It would take them years to rebuild,” he claimed.

Iran ‘preparing a pre-emptive strike’, claims Trump official

Iran may have been preparing to launch pre-emptive missile strikes against American forces, a senior figure in Donald Trump’s administration has claimed.

“We had indicators that they intended to use it potentially, pre-emptively,” the individual told CNN. “And the president decided he was not going to sit back and allow America’s forces in the region to absorb attacks from conventional missiles.”

The official added: “We are not going to be held hostage by them, and we are not going to let them hit us first, because it would have substantially increased the risk to our troops in the region and to our allies.”

However, a source familiar with the intelligence contradicted the claim and said there were no indications Iran planned to strike US forces or assets first.

Israel releases ‘kill list’

Israel has released a list of senior Iranian officials it says have been killed in Saturday’s strikes.

Claiming to have dismantled Iran’s “defence leadership”, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) say the following figures are dead:

  • Ali Shamkhani – Secretary of the Iranian Security Council
  • Mohammad Pakpour – Commander of the IRGC
  • Mohammad Shirazi – Head of the Military Bureau
  • Aziz Nasirzadeh – Defence Minister
  • Hossein Jabal Amelian – Chairman of the SPND (military technology)
  • Reza Mozaffari-Nia – Former Chairman of the SPND
  • Saleh Asadi – a senior intelligence officer

US forces ‘at risk’ if conflict drags on

American forces will be increasingly vulnerable to retaliation from Iran the longer the conflict drags on for, a former Pentagon official under Donald Trump has warned.

Katherine Thompsontold The Telegraph that defending against Iranian missiles and drones for an “extended period” put American bases in the Middle East at risk given the US’ limited supply of missile interceptors.

“The real risk is the ability to provide protection of US forces across the network of legacy bases the US has in the region, as well as defence of Israel, for an extended period of time,” she said.

“Such expansive defensive requirements stressing an already stressed supply of weaponry puts the US on the backfoot in this scenario, and that dynamic no doubt has to be considered by senior decision-makers. “

Ayatollah aide vows ‘unforgettable’ reveng

After Israeli media reported that the Supreme Leader had been killed, Ali Larijani, his top aid, posted on X: “We will make the Zionist criminals and the shameless Americans regret their actions.

“The brave soldiers and the great nation of Iran will deliver an unforgettable lesson to the hellish international oppressors,”
