At Least 20 Dead After Boat Capsizes In Lake Victoria

At least 20 people have died after a boat capsized in Ugandan waters on Lake Victoria.

The vessel, which was ferrying approximately 30 passengers and cargo, was en route to Kasenyi landing site near Entebbe in Wakiso District from Lwanabatya landing site in Kalangala District, Uganda.

It keeled over around Nsazi Island in Mukono District on Lake Victoria.

Ten of the passengers, reports say, were rescued by fishermen who were near the scene of the incident.

The fate of the other passengers remains unknown but efforts to rescue them are ongoing, according to Joshua Wafumbwa, a councilor representing Kyamuswa Sub County in Kalangala District.

“We have already alerted the marine police on the lake, and all efforts are being made to save those who are still alive,” Wafumbwa is quoted as saying by the Monitor.

Cases of boats capsizing in the lake have been on the rise in recent weeks.

In July, a boat carrying 11 people, 100 bags of charcoal, 40 bags of silverfish, and personal belongings capsized in the lake.

The boat was heading from Kiseba Islands to Katosi in Mukono when it capsized between Jana and Kimmi.

Six individuals were rescued by another transport boat but five drowned during the incident.

In the same month, another boat ferrying a load of foodstuff from Kasi islands to Katosi in Mukono district capsized with a man and woman on board.

The man was rescued by nearby fishermen while the woman unfortunately met her demise.

Man Arrested With Counterfeit Banknotes In Athi River

A male suspect is being held at the Athi River police station for allegedly possessing counterfeit money.

Johnson Onyoni was apprehended at his home in Karibu estate Athi River with counterfeit US dollars and various materials used to print notes.

During the Thursday evening operation, 1,000 notes in the denominations of 100 dollars, several tins of 400 grams of unknown liquid substance and 3,000 pieces of black imitation papers of 1,000 Kenya notes were recovered.

According to Athi River sub-county police commander Jos Mudavadi, police were acting on a tip-off from members of the public about suspicious activities taking place in the said home.

“I want to thank members of the public for giving crucial information in matters pertaining to security. We received information that informed us to raid the home which was reported to be printing Kenya shillings and dollars. We have recovered paraphernalia suspected to be used in printing fake currencies, ” Mudavadi said.

Mudavadi said they managed to arrest the suspect who is said to be the home owner.

“The suspect believed to be the owner of the house, was arrested in connection to the seized items. The exhibits have been kept for further analysis,” Mudavadi said.

Mudavadi said they had launched investigations into the incident and the suspect will be arraigned once the probe is complete.

Trump Pleads Not Guilty To 2020 Election Charges

Former US President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty in a Washington DC court to conspiring to overturn his 2020 election defeat.

During a short arraignment, he spoke softly to confirm his not-guilty plea, name and age, and that he was not under the influence of any substances.

He later told reporters the case was “persecution of a political opponent”.

It marks the former president’s third appearance in four months as a criminal defendant.

Mr Trump entered through a backdoor of the courthouse on Thursday afternoon in the centre of the nation’s capital, just yards from the scene of the US Capitol riot that is central to the prosecution’s case.

About 1,000 defendants charged with participating in the storming of Congress on 6 January 2021 have appeared in the same court building.

The former president seemed to exchange glances across the court with Jack Smith, the special counsel leading the investigation.

Mr Trump was seen twiddling his thumbs as he sat waiting for the hearing to begin, and he shook his head as the clerk read out the case number.

His not-guilty plea covered the four charges in this latest indictment:

  • conspiracy to defraud the US
  • conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding
  • obstruction of an official proceeding
  • conspiracy against the rights of citizens

Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya told the former president not to communicate about the facts of the case.

She warned him that failure to comply could result in an arrest warrant, revoked release conditions and contempt of court charges.

Prosecutors told the hearing the case would benefit from a speedy trial.

But Trump defence attorney John Lauro said they would need more time to prepare. He said the prosecution’s timeline was “somewhat absurd” given that the investigation itself had taken three years.

The allegations laid out on Tuesday in an indictment, or charge sheet, include a count of “conspiracy to impair, obstruct, and defeat the federal government function through dishonesty, fraud and deceit”.

Mr Trump lost the 2020 election to his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, but he refused to concede and mounted weeks of challenges across several US states.

He is currently the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican White House nomination and may face a rematch with Mr Biden.

Speaking to reporters before flying home to New Jersey in his private plane, Mr Trump said his arraignment was a “very sad day for America”.

He told reporters he was sad to see “the filth and the decay and all of the broken buildings and walls and the graffiti” in Washington DC.

Outside court, one of his lawyers previewed a possible defence strategy.

Alina Habba argued that the former president had been given bad guidance by his team in the aftermath of the election.

“I think that everybody was made aware that he lost the election, but that doesn’t mean that that was the only advice he was given,” said Ms Habba.

She added: “He may not agree with Mike Pence. He may not agree with one of his lawyers.

“But that doesn’t mean there weren’t other people advising him exactly the opposite. And the president has a right, as every one of us do, to listen to several opinions and make a decision.”

The indictment lists six unnamed co-conspirators who allegedly helped Mr Trump plot to quash his election loss.

Three police officers who testified to Congress about their battle with Trump supporters during the US Capitol riot attended Thursday’s court hearing. Several off-duty judges were also in the room.

A group of supporters waving Trump campaign flags assembled outside, along with anti-Trump demonstrators.

The next hearing will take place on 28 August and is expected to be procedural. However, the judge may set a trial date.

The Republican has already been charged in two other cases: with mishandling classified files and falsifying business records to cover up a hush-money payment to a porn star.

Mr Trump now faces five upcoming trials – three in New York, over the hush-money payment, and civil trials over business practices and alleged defamation of a woman who accused him of rape.

The fourth trial will take place in Florida relating to the alleged mishandling of classified documents.

Koskei: Criminals Using My Name To Extort Money From State Offices

State House Chief of Staff Felix Koskei has raised an alarm over a worrying trend of criminal elements extorting money from state officers in his name.

In a statement on Friday, August 9, 2023, Koskei, who doubles up as Head of Public Service, said the “crooks” have been moving from one government office to another intimidating senior civil servants for financial favours.

Koskei further revealed that the fraudsters have been targeting desperate Kenyans seeking jobs and government services.

“It has regrettably come to my attention that unscrupulous criminal elements are moving from one government office to the next intimidating state officials and extorting money in my name,” Koskei said in a statement shared on Twitter.

He urged Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries and parastatal heads to report such cases to relevant authorities for further action.

“I call upon Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and CEOs of state corporations to be wary of these crooks and promptly report them to the appropriate authorities for swift action,” he added.

He warned that stern action will be taken against any person linked to the fraud.

“The era of criminals taking advantage of gullible Kenyans seeking jobs and government services by misusing names of senior state officials is long gone, and firm action will be taken against these elements,” Koskei warned.

Raila Postpones Migori Visit Over Cholera Outbreak

The planned visit by opposition Leader Raila Odinga to Migori County, initially slated for Saturday this week, has been postponed due to a cholera outbreak.

Migori ODM party Chairman Philip Makabongo said that having a big gathering in the county during this time, in which residents have been urged to be cautious and maintain high hygiene standards, may only serve to aid in the further spread of Cholera.

Further, the Chairman said the party will now organize another visit for the former premier once the disease is fully contained.

During the visit, Odinga was expected to lead a candle-lighting session to remember the people who lost their lives during the recent anti-government protests in the county.

The recent opposition-led anti-government demonstrations led to the death of three people in Migori last month after they were allegedly shot dead by police; thirteen others suffered gunshot wounds.

Migori County Health CEC Julias Nyerere early this week confirmed that eight people were presented in hospital with symptoms, and three of them found to be infected with Cholera.

Street food vendors have since been told to close shop until the outbreak is contained.

KRA Orders Employers To Deduct Housing Levy Effective From July 1

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has now directed employers to deduct Affordable Housing Levy (AHL) contributions from their employees’ gross salaries beginning July 1, 2023.

This comes after the government, through the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, backdated the mandatory contributions proposed in the Finance Act of 2023.

KRA, which was appointed as the collection agent, thus wants employers to remit their 1.5 percent contribution as well as a similar rate for their employees.

“With effect from 1st July, 2023, all employers are required to deduct the AHL from the employee’s gross salary and remit together with the employer’s contribution,” the authority’s Commissioner for Domestic Taxes said in a statement on Friday.

“KRA wishes to further clarify that all employers are required to declare the AHL under sheet ‘M’ of the PAYE return on itax and generate a payment slip under the tax head ‘agency revenue’ and tax sub-head ‘Housing Levy’ and make payments at KRA agent banks or mobile money.”

Employers who fail to remit deductions will be subject to a penalty equal to 2% of the unpaid funds for each month until they comply with the law, according to the KRA.

“KRA is committed to ensure employers are optimally supported and will continuously engage and collaborate with stakeholders to enhance compliance with the Affordable Housing Levy provisions.”

The payments were backdated after the Appellate Court temporarily lifted conservatory orders barring the implementation of the contentious Finance Act, 2023, allowing the government to implement critical taxes that had been put on hold following its suspension late last month.

Brighton Do Not Expect To Sell Caicedo This Summer

Brighton expect that Moises Caicedo will still be at the club when the transfer window closes on 1 September.

The midfielder has been the subject of a series of bids from Chelsea following Arsenal’s interest in January.

No club has reached Brighton’s valuation so far and they do not expect that situation to change this summer.

Brighton are adamant they do not want to sell Ecuador international Caicedo, 21, and have no need to after Alexis Mac Allister’s exit for Liverpool.

Caicedo has been made aware of that stance and Brighton do not believe it will be an issue.

The player asked to leave the Seagulls in January amid interest from Arsenal.

Brighton refused and Caicedo subsequently signed a new contract in March that runs to 2027.

This summer, Chelsea have had offers, believed to be for £70m and £80m, rejected.

Brighton qualified for the Europa League after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.

Newcastle Agree To Sign Livramento For £40m

Newcastle United have agreed a deal for Southampton right-back Tino Livramento worth £40m including add-ons, reports BBC Radio Solent.

The 20-year-old joined the south-coast club from Chelsea in 2021 for £5m.

Livramento’s departure comes after Southampton were relegated from the Premier League last season.

The England Under-21 defender made just two outings last term after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in April 2022.

He came on as a substitute in Southampton’s final two games of campaign against Brighton and Liverpool.

Livramento played 32 games during the 2021-22 season, 28 of those in the Premier League.

Newcastle have signed Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali and England winger Harvey Barnes this summer as the Tyneside club look to push on from their top-four finish last season.

Eddie Howe’s side begin the new Premier League campaign on 12 August when they host Aston Villa.

Chelsea Agree Deal To Sign Brighton Goalkeeper Sanchez

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Premier League rivals Brighton to sign goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for £25 million plus add-ons, reports said on Thursday.

Sanchez, who lost his place to Jason Steele during the second half of last season, will offer competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga following the departure of Edouard Mendy to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli.

It is understood the transfer involves an up-front £25 million payment, with an additional sell-on clause included.

Spain international Sanchez, 25, worked with Chelsea goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts when he was at Brighton. Roberts left for Stamford Bridge in September 2022.

New Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino is overhauling his squad following the club’s worst Premier League season in almost 30 years.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Seagulls midfielder Moises Caicedo, with Brighton said to be looking for a £100 million fee.

They open their new Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on 13 August.

Ramsdale Pledges To Call Out Homophobia

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has pledged to call out homophobia in football, revealing his deep pride in his gay brother.

Ramsdale, writing for The Players’ Tribune, called his actor brother, Oliver, the “real superstar of the family”, hailing his bravery.

“My brother is gay, and he’s lived his life in an open and authentic way since he went off to school,” he said.

“I’m so proud to say he’s my brother. I haven’t talked about it before, but with everything going on in football right now, I thought it was important to mention.”

He added: “Over the years, I’ve probably bit my tongue a few too many times – both in dressing rooms and on social media – whenever I hear homophobic comments or stupid things being said. And I think maybe my brother has done the same, thinking it would make my life easier.

“Well, all that ends today.

“It’s not the easiest thing to be open like this, but there’s never a ‘right time’.”

A Fulham fan was last month banned from attending matches for three years and fined after engaging in homophobic chanting while Wolves were fined £100 000 over similar behaviour by supporters.

Ramsdale, who recently signed a new long-term contract at the Emirates following a campaign in which Arsenal finished second in the Premier League, said he had many “football dreams” about winning trophies.

But he added: “As a person, I have another dream.

“I want this game I love to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone. I want my brother, Ollie – or anyone of any sexuality, race or religion – to come to games without having to fear abuse.

“And when we lift a trophy at the Emirates Stadium, I want my brother there with me.”
