Two Cops Arrested After Robbing Students of Sh680,000 in Juja

Two police officers have been arrested over a case of robbery with violence in which victims lost over Sh600,000 in Juja, Kiambu County.

The officers attached to Kamkunji police in Nairobi were arrested by their Juja counterparts as they revisited a scene they had earlier robbed two university students.

One of the victims, Robinson Mogaka who is a student at Machakos University told police he was driving a salon car after attending a party in Embu when he was blocked by another car. Three men armed with pistols jumped out and handcuffed him.

The gunmen ordered Mogaka to take them to his friend identified as Abdulrahman Juma. On arrival at Juma’s house, the officers also handcuffed him and forced both of them to take them to Total petrol station in Marurui area along Northern Bypass.

There, they forced the two to fuel their (officers’) car for Sh6,000. They also forced Robinson to transfer Sh85,000 from his mobile phone and $4,300 (Sh614,044) from his Binance cryptocurrency account.

They then abandoned the two and left. The complainants reported the matter at Juja police station prompting a probe.

On Wednesday, police were tipped the same suspects were going to Juma’s house for more money. They immediately laid a trap which led to the arrest of the two officers and two other suspected civilian accomplices.

The marathon is set to raise awareness about climate change mitigation and tourism in Nyeri County.

Nyeri County Government, Urban Swaras Running Club and the Mt. Kenya Blazers are jointly organising this marathon, which will raise awareness on the need for people to embrace physical activity to combat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) that have become burdensome to our citizenry.

Ndibithi Farmers In Naivasha Regain Land Ownership After 40 Years

Members of the Ndibithi Farmers’ Group in Naivasha town, Nakuru County, can now smile as the Environmental and Land Court in Nakuru has returned the 1,004-acre farm that was taken away from them by a wealthy individual 40 years ago.

The farmers say that the dispute began in 1983 when Benjamin Kulei went to court seeking to prevent the group from farming on the land, claiming it was rightfully his.

It is alleged that Kulei, who held a significant position within the Kenya Africa National Union(KANU) government, forcefully took the land from the farmers against their wishes.

Reading the court’s decision, Justice Lynette Omollo stated that Kulei failed to provide essential documents such as ownership deeds that would prove how he acquired the land.

Therefore, the court ordered that the 1,004-acre farm be returned to the farmers, with over 200 families.

Woman In Court For Trying To Sell 1-Month-Old son For Ksh20,000

A woman in court for allegedly attempting to sell her one-month-old son for Ksh. 20,000. The prosecution alleged that the woman promoted child trafficking contrary to Section 4 (2)(3) of the counter trafficking in persons Act of 2010.

Phoebe Machesa Barasa, a mother of two, appeared in Thika law courts before senior resident magistrate Oscar Wanyaga on charges of commencing adoption processes for her son with the intent of trafficking him.

Machesa was arrested on August 2, 2023 at Allsops area in Nairobi County, where the deal was to be finalized, together with two other accused people, Francis Burimo Osiolo and Catherine Akinyi Okullo.

While Burimo and Akinyi (alleged traffickers) pleaded not guilty to the allegations, the mother told court that she only planned to deliver the baby to Burimo when she ran out of money to feed her family.

Contrary to her assertions, her husband, Sadic Wasike, informed media that Machesa planned to sell the baby to the other accused persons for Ksh. 20,000.

Wasike claimed that Machesa had already received Ksh. 9,000 as a down payment, and that the balance would be sent upon delivery of the Child.

On July 27 Machesa reportedly refused to breastfeed the baby only to mysteriously disappear the same day.

She would subsequently call Wasike and tell him that the infant had been admitted to Thika Level Five Hospital and that he should look after their other child.

After a lengthy interrogation by Wasike and friends, Machesa disclosed that she had taken the baby to Pumwani Hospital. They went to the hospital, only to find out that the child was neither present nor had been admitted.

The case will be mentioned on August 17, 2023 as the accused persons remain in Custody.

Germany Out Of Women’s World Cup, Colombia And Morocco Into Last 16

Germany crashed out of the Women’s World Cup in the group stage for the first time in their history on Thursday after a frustrating 1-1 draw with South Korea allowed debutants Morocco to advance to the last 16 instead.

With Morocco beating Colombia 1-0 in Perth to join the South Americans on six points in Group H, Germany finished third in the table on four points and will be heading home.

World Cup winners in 2003 and 2007, Germany reached the European Championship final last year and came to Australia as one of the favourites to win the trophy.

They knew a win against South Korea would take them through to the knockout stage and were expected to get the better of a side who had lost their opening two matches and had next to no chance of advancing.

But after they went a goal up early on through Cho So-hyun, the Koreans battled hard and defended ferociously to frustrate their opponents, who could not find a winner following Alexandra Popp’s equaliser.

The Germans said before the game they wanted more creativity after their shock 2-1 loss to Colombia, but they were unable to convert their many chances.

They had 13 shots to their opponents’ six, but only three of those were on target as Korea put almost everyone behind the ball in defence.

Sixteen-year-old striker Casey Phair almost scored for Korea inside three minutes when she latched onto a through ball, but her shot was brilliantly saved by German goalkeeper Merle Frohms.

But three minutes later the Germans went behind from an almost identical move, Choe Yu-ri playing a ball through to Cho, whose side-foot effort beat Frohms to find the back of the net.

The goal seemed to spur the Germans into action, and they dominated possession and territory after that, although they couldn’t find a way through the Korean defence.

They found plenty of space out wide on both sides and when the equaliser came three minutes from the break, it was no surprise it was from a cross.

Svenja Huth put in a delightful ball for skipper Popp, who rose above the Korean defenders to powerfully head home.

The Germans came out firing after the break and threw everything at the Koreans.

They had a goal disallowed for offside in the 59th minute, before Popp smacked the bar with another header moments later.

As the clock ticked down the Germans became more and more desperate but despite plenty of endeavour, they never really looked like finding a winner in the 13 minutes of stoppage time.

Magnificent Morocco Beat Colombia To Seal Round Of 16 Place

Anissa Lahmari scored the only goal as Morocco sealed a 1-0 Group H victory over Colombia and earned their place in the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup on Thursday, becoming the third African nation to advance past the pool stage.

The North Africans, who finished runners-up in their pool ahead of ousted pre-tournament favourites Germany, join South Africa and Nigeria in the knockout rounds and will meet France on Tuesday in Sydney.

It is a stunning outcome for a side who were thumped 6-0 by Germany in their opening pool fixture, but followed that up with a pair of 1-0 wins over South Korea and Colombia, the latter topping the pool.

Morocco coach Reynald Pedros had urged his side to remain calm in the wake of that Germany loss and vowed they would improve. He was right, but their passage was also aided by Germany’s inability to beat South Korea in their final pool game that ended 1-1.

It is proving a stunning World Cup for Africa, with few predicting they would have more than perhaps one side in the knockout rounds, but they have shown the level between teams on the continent and the rest of the world is closing.

Zambia are the only side that did not make it out of their pool, but they at least signed off with a 3-1 win in their final game against Costa Rica.

Colombia had a strong early appeal for a penalty when the ball appeared to strike the arm of Lahmari in the box, but nothing was given.

Lahmari then fired over from the edge of the penalty area when well placed, before Morocco goalkeeper Khadija Errmichi made a smart stop just past the half-hour mark.

Morocco then had a strong penalty appeal turned down before they did win a spot-kick seconds before halftime as Ibtissam Jraïdi was bundled over in the box following a push in the back.

The penalty from Ghizlane Chebbak was superbly saved by Colombia goalkeeper Catalina Perez, but Lahmari followed up to score as she poked in the loose ball.

There was a quiet start to the second half, but as it wore on, it was wave-after-wave of Colombia attacks.

Errmichi made a superb stop to deny Daniela Montoya from close range, while Lorena Bedoya could only hit the side-netting.

Mayra Ramírez was proving a real threat on the Colombian right wing and she burst into the box before rifling in a shot that hit the outside of the post. Shortly afterwards she had a penalty appeal waved away.

Morocco had to withstand heavy pressure in the closing stages, but were able to withstand the Colombia onslaught to claim their famous win.

Al-Shabaab’s Insidious Strategy: Planting IEDs on Kenyan Roads to Target Security Forces

Written by/// LISA NYAMBURA MURIMI

In a deeply concerning development, the terrorist group Al-Shabaab has been employing a chilling tactic in Kenya, planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on roads and monitoring the moment security forces inadvertently drive over them.

The sinister strategy aims to inflict maximum damage on the security forces, undermine public safety, and spread fear and instability throughout the region.

The presence of Al-Shabaab, a notorious Islamist extremist group originating from Somalia, has been an ongoing security concern for Kenya and its neighboring countries.

Their violent activities have claimed numerous innocent lives, disrupted communities, and posed a significant challenge to regional stability.

The IEDs are often concealed in inconspicuous locations, making them difficult to detect, even for well-trained security personnel. Once an IED is triggered, it unleashes a devastating explosion, causing fatalities, injuries, and destruction.

Moreover, Al-Shabaab operatives lurk nearby, filming the attacks, and exploiting the footage for propaganda purposes, aiming to spread fear and amplify their cause to attract new recruits.

To counter this evolving threat, Kenyan security forces are employing advanced technological measures and strengthening intelligence-sharing efforts with regional partners.

Additionally, international cooperation and support are crucial in addressing the root causes of terrorism, including poverty, marginalization, and radicalization.

By combining efforts, the global community can help bolster Kenya’s security capabilities and disrupt Al-Shabaab’s dangerous operations.

As the battle against terrorism rages on, it is imperative that all stakeholders remain united in their efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s networks and safeguard innocent lives.

The planting of IEDs on Kenyan roads serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance, cooperation, and resilience in the face of this ruthless threat.
