Martha Karua Scoffs UDA after mini polls clean sweep

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, on Friday, February 27, downplayed the UDA’s clean sweep in the recently concluded by-elections.

Speaking during a United Alternative Government rally in Naivasha, Karua stated that a victory in the by-elections did not guarantee a win in the 2027 General Election.

She alleged that President William Ruto, who also doubles as the UDA party leader, rigged the elections in favour of the ruling party.

The firebrand leader vowed to send Ruto packing in the presidential contest slated for August next year.

“You can steal the by-election, but you will not rig the general election. We know your ways, and we will floor you in the general elections, ” Karua stated.

The PLP leader reaffirmed that the United Alternative Government leaders would settle on one presidential candidate and rally behind him or her.

Karua maintained that the redemption of Kenya required a complete overhaul of the UDA system, and pushed for the United Opposition to unseat all leaders elected under the Wheelbarrow party.

“We will choose one flagbearer in the Opposition, but we will also ensure that we have a candidate in all the other elective positions,” she reiterated.

On his part, former Attorney General Justin Muturi insisted that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) must cancel its contract with Smartmatic.

The United opposition urged the youth to turn up in numbers and register as voters during IEBC’s mass registration exercise in March.

UDA clinched four seats in the by-elections held in Isiolo South Constituency, West Kabras Ward, Muminji and Evuroe Wards.

Ruto personally congratulated the elected leaders and the people for showing confidence in the UDA party.

Arrest after Churchill statue defaced with graffiti

A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage after graffiti was sprayed on the statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square, the Metropolitan Police said.

The statue was defaced with graffiti branding the former prime minister a “Zionist war criminal”.

Other phrases including “Stop the Genocide” and “Free Palestine” were sprayed in red paint on the bronze sculpture in Westminster, central London. Further graffiti reads “Never again is Now” and “Globalise the Intifada”.

The statue has been cordoned off and was being cleaned by on Friday morning.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 0400hrs on Friday 27 February a man was seen spraying graffiti on the statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square.

“The first officers were on the scene within two minutes. The man – who is 38 – was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage.”

A representative of 10 Downing Street said the attack was “completely abhorrent”.

“Churchill was a great Briton. This government will always stand up for our values and the perpetrator must be held to account.”

Pharmaceutical Body Identifies Individual Who Recorded Gachagua Buying Medicine

The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has issued an update concerning a viral video that captured former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua purchasing medicine at a pharmacy.

In a statement on Friday, February 27, the pharmaceutical body said preliminary investigations revealed that the individual in question is not registered under its membership.

“Following preliminary verification, PSK confirms that the individual featured in the circulating footage is not a licensed Pharmacist and is not a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya,” the statement read.

As such, PSK urged Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to step in and ensure that the outlet involved complies with all statutory and professional requirements.

“We call upon the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to investigate the matter thoroughly, verify compliance of the outlet with licensing requirements, and reinforce patient safety standards across all pharmacy premises,” the statement added.

On Thursday, February 26, PSK said capturing footage of patients in such settings without their approval undermines healthcare ethics and confidentiality.

“The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) wishes to state clearly and unequivocally that recording any client within a pharmacy setting without consent constitutes a serious breach of privacy and healthcare confidentiality,” the statement read.

PSK noted that pharmacies are not ordinary retail spaces but healthcare environments where clients are entitled to respect and protection of their personal information.

“Pharmacies are healthcare environments, and every individual seeking medicines or professional advice is entitled to dignity, discretion, and protection of their personal health information,” the statement added.

The body also defended the professionalism and training of pharmacists, explaining the standards they are expected to uphold in their practice.

“Pharmacists undergo advanced university training in pharmacology, therapeutics, clinical decision-making, and patient safety. Upon qualification, pharmacists take a professional oath committing to place patient welfare first, uphold confidentiality, promote the safe and rational use of medicines, and practice with integrity and accountability at all times,” the statement noted.

PSK noted that it is still establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether licensed professionals were involved at the outlet captured in the video.

“At this stage, it is not yet clear which licensed professionals were present at the outlet in question. PSK is undertaking due diligence to verify the identity and licensing status of the outlet and the professionals involved so that appropriate regulatory steps may be taken if necessary,” the statement continued.

The society reaffirmed to the public that regardless of their public standing, they are entitled to confidential healthcare services.

“Regardless of public profile or status, every Kenyan has the right to confidential healthcare. We therefore extend our regret over the apparent breach of privacy that has occurred,” the statement concluded.

IEBC forced to cancel results of a polling station in Isiolo South after total votes cast exceeded data in the KIEMS kit

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cancelled the results from an entire polling station in Isiolo South after a discrepancy between the votes cast and voter turnout.

Speaking to the media on Friday, February 27, the Returning Officer Abdi Sheikh explained that the total votes counted exceeded the number of people verified by the KIEMS kit by 100.

Consequently, all votes cast at Garbatulla Primary School during the parliamentary by-election were declared null and void.

“The results of a count of votes at a polling station exceeded the total number of voters who turned out to vote in that election.

“I, as the returning officer, hereby invalidate the results for this polling station,” Sheikh declared.

Efforts by the polling station’s Presiding Officer to explain the discrepancy were futile as election laws did not allow reopening of the ballot boxes.

“Regulation 83 (1) (c) of the Election General Regulations does not allow us to open the ballot box to confirm what the presiding officer was trying to explain to us,” the IEBC official explained.

The Kenya Integrated Elections Management System (KIEMS) kits are used in polling centres to verify voter details before they are issued ballot papers.

The KITS also tabulates the number of voters who turned out to vote, which should match the total votes cast when counting is done.

UDA candidate Mohamed Tubi won the Isiolo South Parliamentary elections after securing 7,352 votes. He beat his sister Bina Mohammed, who came in second with 634 votes.

The ruling party clinched all four seats up for grabs in the by-elections conducted on February 26: Isiolo South MP, Kabuchai MP, West Kabras MCA and Evurore MCA.

IEBC expressed gratitude to Kenyans for turning up to vote and commended its staff for their dedication, diligence, and professionalism in the planning and conduct of the by-elections.

CS Duale Rejects Sh12.7 Billion in Suspected Fake SHA Claims

The government has rejected Sh12.7 billion worth of alleged fraudulent claims through the digital system running the Social Health Authority, Health CS Aden Duale has said.

He said this as he insisted that there has been no loss of Sh11 billion from the Social Health Authority.

“This figure—which currently stands at Sh12.7 billion as of today—represents claims that were flagged, rejected and unpaid by our new digital gatekeeper.

Therefore, this represents money saved, not lost,” Duale said.

He was addressing senators during their retreat in Naivasha.

Duale said the fraud detection was enabled by an artificial intelligence-driven claims management system that blocks suspicious billing before payment.

He said 1,188 fraudulent files had been forwarded to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, with 26 suspects already charged in court and 248 health facilities under probe.

Duale told the Senate that the transition from the defunct NHIF to the Social Health Authority had stabilised health financing and improved accountability.

He said SHA has so far registered 29.7 million Kenyans, collected Sh142.78 billion in contributions and paid Sh105 billion to healthcare providers, achieving a claims settlement rate of 73 per cent.

The CS said the government has sponsored 558,000 vulnerable households under the Social Health Insurance Fund, while counties, NG-CDF and development partners have supported more than 62,000 others.

Murang’a county was singled out for fully paying premiums for 38,000 indigent households.

The CS said free primary healthcare is being rolled out across all counties, with more than 8 million Kenyans already accessing services without paying at Level 2 and 3 facilities.

He cited the “Lipa SHA Pole Pole” initiative, which allows informal sector workers to make small instalment contributions, noting that over 411,000 active payers had raised Sh1.4 billion.

On overseas treatment, Duale announced new strict rules to curb abuse of the scheme.

Only 39 procedures not available locally will qualify for foreign referrals, each capped at Sh500,000 and subject to peer review.

Hospitals abroad must also be pre-approved and linked to local facilities to ensure continuity of care.

Duale defended devolution in health, saying it had expanded access through functional Level 4 and 5 hospitals in all 47 counties.

He urged senators, led by Amason Kingi, to support legislation and funding to sustain the reforms.

He called for urgent exchequer releases of Sh5.9 billion to clear pending primary healthcare claims, a supplementary budget of Sh11.9 billion to cover projected deficits and Sh2.04 billion to support the maternity package.

The CS also warned counties against replacing their health allocations with facility improvement funds, saying the practice undermines the intent of the law that allows hospitals to retain revenue for service upgrades.

On digitisation, he said 10,277 health facilities have been linked to the Taifa Care system, with more than 30,000 digital devices deployed and health data now hosted locally under a new Kenya–US partnership to safeguard sovereignty.

Duale said the ministry had also regularised the status of medical interns, formalised and equipped 107,000 community health promoters and invested Sh6.18 billion in diagnostic equipment under the National Equipment Support Programme.

He added that Kenya is expanding laboratory networks and emergency operations centres through the Kenya National Public Health Institute to strengthen pandemic preparedness, while Kenyatta National Hospital has established a tissue-matching laboratory to support organ transplants locally.

Despite the progress, Duale acknowledged challenges in harmonising health laws and pushing through the Quality Healthcare and Patient Safety Bill, which he said is critical to standardising care.

“The state of our healthcare is transforming. We have moved from a deficit-ridden NHIF to a surplus-generating SHA, stopped the haemorrhage of public funds and redirected resources to the mwananchi,” he said.

The CS urged senators to provide legislative backing and oversight to anchor the gains and ensure universal health coverage becomes a reality.

Pakistan defence minister says country in ‘open war’ with Afghanistan after strikes

Pakistan’s defence minister has said the country is in “open war” with Afghanistan, after Islamabad launched airstrikes on Kabul as part of a wave of attacks across the country.

“Our patience has now run out,” said Khawaja Muhammad Asif following the attacks.

The strikes came after the Afghan Taliban announced a major offensive against Pakistani military posts near the border on Thursday night.

The latest attacks follow months of clashes between the two neighbouring nations, despite agreeing to a fragile ceasefire in October.

Last year’s negotiations failed to reach a broader agreement for a complete end to hostilities, with both side blaming each other for not engaging seriously with talks.

On Thursday the Taliban military said a “retaliatory operation” had been launched at around 20:00 local time (15:30 GMT).

Pakistan quickly retaliated, saying the Taliban had “miscalculated and opened unprovoked fire on multiple locations” across the border in its north-western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which had been met with an “immediate and effective response” by Islamabad’s security forces.

It then launched a series of bombing raids on Afghanistan in the early hours of Friday morning, striking targets in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktika in response to what they called “unprovoked Afghan attacks”.

US allows non-emergency embassy staff to leave Israel, cites safety risks

Israelis disembark a bus after they were flown back to Israel in a special flight, on June 18, 2025 in Tel Aviv. A first aircraft bringing home Israelis stranded abroad by flight cancellations resulting from the conflict with Iran landed at Ben Gurion Airport on June 18, the airports authority said. Transport Minister Miri Regev said that between 100,000 and 150,000 Israelis were stuck abroad, as Israel and Iran traded deadly fire in their most intense confrontation ever. (Photo by GIL COHEN-MAGEN / AFP)

(Reuters) – The U.S. will permit non-emergency government personnel and family members to leave Israel over safety risks, the U.S. Embassy in ‌Jerusalem said on Friday, ‌amid growing concerns about the risk of a military conflict with Iran.

The embassy did not elaborate on the safety risks leading to the “authorized departure”, which allows affected personnel to decide whether to leave. It falls short of the ordered departure instituted this week for some personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut.

The U.S. has built up one of its biggest military deployments in the Middle East as it negotiates with Iran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear programme. The latest round of talks ended on Thursday with no sign of a breakthrough.

Iran has threatened to strike American bases in the region if it is attacked, and an escalation could also draw in Israel. The two foes fought a 12-day war in June.

Several countries have begun withdrawing dependents of diplomatic personnel and non-essential staff from some locations in the Middle East, or advising citizens to avoid travel to Iran, amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Draft Order to Declare National Emergency on Elections Circulating Trump Allies

Allies of the Trump administration are reportedly circulating a document that they say would grant the president sweeping powers over elections, including the ability to ban mail-in ballots, by declaring a national emergency over disproven allegations of interference by China in the 2020 election, a new Washington Post report finds.

Right-wing activists who claim to be in contact with the White House have drafted a 17-page executive order that would declare a national emergency over elections by claiming Chinese interference.

This order would give Donald Trump unprecedented control over elections. An advocate for the draft order claims it would give Trump the power to ban mail-in ballots and voting machines “as the vectors of foreign interference,” the Post reports.

“But here we have a situation where the president is aware that there are foreign interests that are interfering in our election processes,” advocate Peter Ticktin told the Post. “That causes a national emergency where the president has to be able to deal with it.” Ticktin is a lawyer involved with Trump’s failed lawsuit accusing Democrats of conspiring to damage him through allegations that his campaign colluded with Russia in the 2016 election.

Allegations of Chinese interference in the 2020 election by Trump and top administration officials were disproven in 2021 by the U.S. intelligence community, which assessed that China “considered but did not deploy influence efforts intended to change the outcome of the US Presidential election.”

Experts and lawmakers say that any such order would be struck down by courts. Voting rights group Democracy Docket described it as “blatantly illegal.” However, court action takes time — Trump’s tariffs were in place for over a year before being struck down by the Supreme Court, plenty of time for the Trump administration to sow chaos by interrupting or delaying elections. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has a history of openly defying court orders.

It’s unclear if the draft order has circulated within the White House directly, but Ticktin claims to be in “certain coordination” with the White House. The White House said officials are in contact with allies outside of the administration who share policy ideas, but they would not confirm or deny contact about the election draft order.

The report comes, however, as the Trump administration is increasingly threatening to cancel or interfere with elections indefinitely, and is seeking legal avenues to do so.

Earlier this month, trying to push for the passage of a sweeping voter suppression bill, the SAVE Act, Trump said that he is “search[ing] the depths of Legal Arguments not yet articulated or vetted on this subject, and will be presenting an irrefutable one in the very near future.”

“There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!” he said, signalling his intent to bypass Congress in order to seize control of elections.

Trump has repeatedly said that he is going to do everything in his power to bar Democrats from being elected, opining about Republicans nationalizing elections, rather than allowing states to run them, or suggesting that he should “cancel” the midterms altogether.

During his State of the Union speech this week, Trump said that “the only way [Democrats] can get elected is to cheat. And we’re going to stop it. We have to stop it.”
