Adidas Sells Batch Of Yeezy Shoes For $565M After Kanye West Split

Adidas has sold a batch of unsold Yeezy shoes for $565 million, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Adidas ended its partnership with Kanye West in October 2022 after the rapper made a series of antisemitic comments on social media and in interviews. The partnership had been hugely successful, with Yeezy shoes generating billions of dollars in revenue for Adidas.

However, the controversy surrounding West led Adidas to sever ties with the rapper. The company said that it would continue to sell existing inventory of Yeezy shoes, but it would not be working with West on any new products.

Adidas sold more than €500 million worth of Yeezy shoes in an online sale that exceeded the company’s expectations. The sale, which ran from late May to early June, drew orders for 4 million pairs of shoes. However, Adidas was unable to meet all of the orders, particularly for certain sizes and models.

The sale was part of Adidas’ efforts to clear out its remaining inventory of Yeezy shoes. Adidas said it would donate a significant portion of the proceeds from the sale to charities that combat racism and antisemitism.

The strong demand for Yeezy shoes in the online sale suggests that there is still a market for the product. However, it is unclear how much longer Adidas will be able to sell Yeezy shoes.

The company’s license to produce Yeezy shoes expires in 2026, and it is possible that West will not renew the license.

Man Tests Positive For MERS In Abu Dhabi – WHO

(Reuters) – A 28-year-old man has tested positive for the potentially fatal Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in a city in Abu Dhabi on the border with Oman, the World Health Organization said on Monday.

The man in the city of Al Ain was admitted to hospital last month, the WHO said in a statement. Health officials had checked 108 people that he was in contact with, but no secondary infections had turned up so far, it added.

The WHO said there were no signs the man had come into contact with dromedary camels, which spread the disease that is separate from COVID-19. It gave no more details on his current condition.

The United Arab Emirates’ health ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the case.

Cases of MERS-CoV – which can cause fever, coughing and shortness of breath, and in some cases can lead to pneumonia – have been recorded in 27 countries since 2012, according to WHO figures.

Marseille Sign Winger Ismaila Sarr From Watford

Marseille announced the signing of 25-year-old Senegalese international Ismaila Sarr late Monday, further strengthening their front line following the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The winger is reported to have joined the French club on a five-year contract following a 13 million euro ($14.4 million) deal, although there was no official confirmation from Marseille.

Sarr is the second big-name signing to arrive at the Stade Velodrome in recent days after Aubameyang joined on a free transfer from Chelsea last week.

The arrival of two forwards casts further doubt on the future of Alexis Sanchez. Out of contract since the end of June, the Chilean attacker has not yet committed to extending his stay on the south coast.

The move signals a return to French football for Sarr who began his career in 2016 at Metz, before joining Rennes in 2017.

The winger scored 18 goals and made 16 assists in 77 appearances for the Breton club.

This was enough to attract the Hornets’ attention in 2019. Sarr scored 34 goals and made 24 assists in 131 appearances during his four years in England.

Sarr, who was Watford’s record signing, won the Player of the Season award for 2020-2021 season after his 13 goals helped lead the club back to the top flight of English football.

“Thank you and good luck, Isma”, Watford wrote on Twitter, which is being rebranded as ‘X’.

Last year, Ismaila Sarr met with success on the international stage when he won the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. The winger boasts 54 caps for the Lions of Teranga.

It has been a busy summer transfer window so far for Marseille. In addition to Aubameyang, Sarr joins defender Renan Lodi and central midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, both signed from Atletico Madrid.

Man Jailed For 10 Years For Vandalizing Electricity Meter

Nanyuki law court has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison or a fine of KShs. 5 million for vandalizing a customer’s electricity meter board at Riverside estate in Timau town, Meru County.

The suspect, Brian Wahome, was arrested and booked at Timau police station before he was arraigned at Nanyuki law courts, where he was charged with stealing energy equipment contrary to section 169 (1) (c) of the Energy Act 2019.

He pleaded guilty and was handed the sentence by Lisper Gakii Nyaga, the resident magistrate at Nanyuki law courts. At the time of his arrest, Mr. Wahome was found in possession of two cutouts, a switch, and the meter board.

Kenya Power’s Ag. Security Services Manager Maj. Paul Nyaga Gichovi (Rtd.) welcomed the judgment, terming it a big boost to the fight against vandalism.

“This sentence will go a long way to deter vandalism and other illegal activities on the network. We are relentless in the fight against these crimes as they pose the danger of loss of life through electrocution and undermine the quality of power supply, beyond financial losses to the Company,” said Maj. Nyaga.

He added, “In the fight against illegal activities on the electricity distribution network, we have enlisted the support of various stakeholders including the National Government Administration Officers. I urge members of the public to support this fight by reporting any suspicious activities on the network to the nearest police station or Kenya Power office.”

The sentence comes four months after a similar one was handed by the Engineer law court in Nyandarua to two suspects who were found guilty of vandalizing and siphoning oil from a 100kva transformer and using the oil to cook potato chips.

The South Korean Minister expressed their country’s focus on promoting bio-health as its second driving force, highlighting the importance they place on advancing the healthcare sector.

This benchmarking visit provides an invaluable opportunity for Kenya to learn from South Korea’s experiences and best practices in healthcare, paving the way for potential collaborations and advancements in the medical sector.

Government to Support KIPRE’s Research in Health Products and Technologies to Achieve UHC

In order to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the government has placed a strong emphasis on health products and technologies (HPTs).

The government is actively developing measures to guarantee the creation of locally produced, long-lasting, and affordable solutions to satisfy our healthcare demands.

The Kenya Primate Research Institute (KIPRE), which is at the forefront of conducting research in many areas, including phage therapy for Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, an alternative therapy, was visited by Principal Secretary of the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni.

The Principal Secretary emphasised the significance of such solutions during her visit to the Institute, particularly in light of the rise of antibiotic-resistant cases like Super Gonorrhoea.

The Institute is also engaged in numerous projects related to reproductive health, including a regional anti-venom vaccination.

The Ministry of Health is devoted to helping KIPRE in their efforts to improve HPT access and sustainability in the direction of UHC.

By doing this MOH seeks to develop a stronger and more dependable healthcare system for all Kenyans through funding local initiatives and research.

President Ruto Reduces Death Sentences To Life Imprisonment

President William Ruto on Friday, July 21, reduced the death penalty for all capital offenders to a life sentence as recommended by the Advisory Committee on the Power of Mercy.

The directive, published in a Gazette notice by Attorney General Justin Muturi, will apply to all convicts sentenced to death as of November 21, 2022. In addition, Ruto granted clemency to 5,861 convicts, including 2,944 who had served sentences of six months or less and exhibited good conduct. The decision was made in accordance with Article 133 of the 2010 Constitution which grants the president the power to pardon individuals convicted of an offence.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that in the exercise of the powers conferred by Article 133 of the Constitution of Kenya and section 23 (1) of the Power of Mercy Act, 2011, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces of the Republic of Kenya, commuted the death sentence imposed on every capital offender as at November 21, 2022, to a life sentence,” the notice reads in part.

Kenya last enforced the death penalty in 1987 when Hezekiah Ochuka was hanged for treason related to a 1982 coup attempt. The penalty did not align with the 2010 Constitution which promises the right to life and freedom. In 2017, the Supreme Court declared the death penalty unconstitutional while ruling on a case filed by Francis Muruatetu. The 2017 ruling led to the creation of the Taskforce on the Review of the Mandatory Death Sentence.

Former Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta both commuted the sentences of death row inmates to life imprisonment in 2009 and 2016, respectively. In Kenya, a life sentence is until the end of one’s life, not by execution.

Anti-Gay Bills Passed By Namibia’s National Council

The National Council (NC) on July 24th passed the private member’s bills introduced by Swapo lawmaker Jerry Ekandjo to define the term ‘spouse’ and amend the Marriage Act of 1961.

Ekandjo last week introduced a bill on the definition of ‘spouse’, invoking articles 81 and 4 of the Namibian Constitution to contradict a decision of the Supreme Court of Namibia on same-sex marriage.

He also tabled a bill to change sections of the Marriage Act, including the definitions of the terms ‘marriage’, ‘same-sex marriage’ and ‘spouse’.

The bills were passed with minimal amendments and were overwhelmingly supported by both sides of the house.

The bill on the definition of the word ‘spouse’ sailed through the committee stage without objection.

The marriage amendment bill is the fifth one to be passed by the NC in three weeks.

In his final contribution to the bill, Swapo’s Tobias Hainyeko constituency councillor Likuwa Christopher said 99% of Namibians are Christians.

“I fail to understand in today’s Namibia for a magistrate to bond two men or women and bless them together. What will they reproduce? Water, stones, or what? If they produce zero, that means they are planning to kill the future generation,” he said.

Christopher said that he appreciates the bill and thanked Ekandjo for tabling it.

“Any Namibian who is found doing this practice must be punished,” he said.

He also requested the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Health and Social Services to make social workers available to anyone who wants to practise sodomy.

Supporting Christopher, United Democratic Front (UDF) regional councillor for Khorixas, Gobs Sebastiaan, said same-sex marriage in whatever form is not practised in any society.

He further added that he only supports marriage in “the way known to him”.

“Marriage is a legally and socially sanctioned union usually between a man and a woman,” he said.

Okahao constituency councillor and Swapo member Shikulo Leornard said it is important that family values are protected and preserved.

“From the onset, marriage is between a man and woman with the aim of reproduction. Any deterioration of such a natural relationship is a disgrace,” he said.

He also said that same-sex marriages must be condemned in their totality.

Ekandjo’s private member’s bills were tabled in parliament early this month. This came after the executive director of home affairs, immigration, safety and security, Ettiene Maritz, said the ministry would abide by a Supreme Court judgement recognising same-sex marriages legally concluded outside the country.

On 16 May, the Supreme Court ruled against the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security’s refusal to recognise spouses in same-sex marriages validly concluded outside Namibia for immigration purposes in terms of Section 2(1)(c) of the Immigration Control Act of 1993.

The court found that the ministry’s stance infringed on those foreign nationals’ rights to dignity and equality under Namibian law.

Swapo member of parliament and minister of agriculture, water and land reform Calle Schlettwein on Monday said the proposed bills are in conflict with enshrined rights in Namibia’s Constitution.

He said he believes the bills are against human rights as enshrined in the Constitution. He further said these cannot be changed by any politician or parliamentarian.

Schlettwein took to social media last week, saying liberty is “freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction and hampering conditions, or the power or right of doing, thinking, speaking, according to choice”.

“The parliament approved to interfere with, restrict, hamper and criminalise a choice of affection,” the minister tweeted.

Popular Democratic Movement leader McHenry Venaani last week in parliament said Ekandjo’s proposed anti-gay law would have to pass a constitutionality test.

Congolese Soldier Who Opened Fire On Mourners Killing 13 Arrested

A Congolese soldier accused of gunning down 13 people, most of them children, in the northeast of the conflict-plagued country has been arrested and will stand trial Tuesday, a military source said.

According to witnesses to the killings in Nyakova village on Saturday, the suspect couldn’t bear the fact that his own child had been buried in his absence.

Nyakova is a fishing village in the Djugu territory, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, one of eastern DR Congo’s violence hotspots where deadly attacks are common.

The angry soldier had returned home and “fired on civilians” gathered “at the place of mourning, on the grounds that… his child had died and been buried without him being informed,” army spokesperson Lieutenant Jules Ngongo told AFP.

The death toll of 13 was said to include nine children, including two of the soldier’s own offspring, the spokesperson said.

Magistrate Colonel Joseph Makelele, senior military prosecutor at the Ituri province military court, told AFP that the 32-year-old suspect named Babby Ndombe Opetu would be prosecuted “for murder and violation of orders” Tuesday.

Ngongo said the suspect was a noncommissioned member of the 332nd naval force based at Tchomia, just two kilometers (1.24 miles) from Nyakova on the shores of Lake Albert bordering Uganda.

The military spokesman said the suspect had fled the scene of the attack and gone into hiding in Tchomia, where he was found late Sunday and “handed over to the courts for trial.”

A civil society source said Sunday that a 14th victim had died due to his injuries, but that has not been confirmed. According to another source, a neighbor, panicked by the gunfire, suffered a heart attack and died.

Eldoret Man Jailed For Sending Vulgar Texts To His Ex

An Eldoret court has sentenced Fidel Ochieng to 3 years in prison or pay a fine of Sh100,000 for pleading guilty to sending abusive messages to his estranged wife, Sharon Bwonya.

The court proceedings revealed that Ochieng had used his mobile phone to send offensive messages to Sharon Bwonya during a period between July 10 and July 19 in Eldoret.

The prosecutor emphasized that the messages were not only directed at the complainant but also included vulgar content addressed to her parents.

The court clerk found the language used in these messages to be highly inappropriate and was embarrassed to read them aloud during the proceedings.

He explained that he had written the messages out of anger upon realizing that his wife, who he believed loved him deeply, had separated from him under the influence of her parents.

Despite his apology, Judge Barasa emphasized that the words used by Ochieng were disrespectful to both the complainant and her parents, making the offense all the more serious.

As part of the verdict, the accused has been given a 14-day window to file an appeal if he wishes to challenge the court’s decision.

This case serves as a reminder of the consequences that can follow abusive and harmful behavior, especially in the context of personal relationships.
