Wagner Group Chief Says Activities To Continue In Africa

The founder of Russia’s private military company Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has told Afrique Media TV that his mercenaries will continue working in African countries where they are present.

“We continue to work in all the countries where we started or are now doing this work of co-operation and development,” he said in an interview published on the pro-Kremlin TV’s Facebook page.

“If the assistance of the Wagner Group is needed anywhere to combat gangs and terrorists and to protect the interests of the people of these countries, we are ready to begin immediately to fulfil this task after agreeing on the conditions.”

He added that “there was no, and there will be no reduction in our programmes in Africa”.

His remarks followed rumours about the possible withdrawal of Wagner mercenaries from Mali and the Central African Republic. The rumours began circulating after Mr Prigozhin staged a short-lived mutiny in Russia on 24 June.

Rights groups have accused Wagner mercenaries of committing human rights abuses in Mali and CAR.

Man City Agree £30m Deal With Al-Ahli For Mahrez

Manchester City have agreed a £30m deal for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli to sign Algeria winger Riyad Mahrez.

The 32-year-old has been given permission not to travel on City’s pre-season trip to Japan and South Korea.

That had already been agreed providing City received a bid that matched their valuation of Mahrez, who had two years left on his contract.

City paid £60m for Mahrez in 2018 and he scored 15 goals from 47 games in the Blues’ Treble-winning season.

However, he was an unused substitute for both the FA Cup and Champions League finals and manager Pep Guardiola has opted to let him join the list of big-name recruits by the SPL this summer.

Liverpool have also agreed a £12m deal in principle worth £12m plus add-ons to sell England midfielder Jordan Henderson to Al-Ettifaq.

The likes of Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante and Ruben Neves have already followed Cristiano Ronaldo to Saudi Arabia this summer, while Steven Gerrard has been named Al-Ettifaq manager and Michael Emenalo has been appointed the SPL’s director of football.

The country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has also taken over four of the SPL’s leading clubs, including Al-Ahli, as the league aims to become one of the top five in the world.

Mahrez is the only senior player to miss City’s trip to Asia.

The futures of England defender Kyle Walker, Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva and Spain defender Aymeric Laporte have all been the subject of speculation this summer.

However, all three are in Guardiola’s travelling squad for the pre-season games.

Reports in Germany have suggested Bayern Munich have agreed a deal for Walker, but it is thought they are wide of the mark.

Portugal full-back Joao Cancelo is also part of the City squad after Bayern chose not to take up the option of turning last season’s six-month loan into a permanent deal.

It is understood goalkeeper Zach Steffen is absent with a knee injury, although City are open to the idea of the USA international moving on this summer.

Al-Ettifaq Agree £12m Deal For Liverpool’s Henderson

Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle worth £12m plus add-ons to sell captain Jordan Henderson to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq.

Henderson travelled to Germany with Liverpool for their training camp but was not involved in their 4-2 friendly win over Karlsruher.

The England midfielder, 33, has two years left on his contract at Anfield.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was recently appointed as manager of Al-Ettifaq.

The agreement for Henderson follows Liverpool receiving a £40m offer from Al-Ittihad for fellow midfielder Fabinho last Friday.

Unlike Henderson, the 29-year-old Brazil international did not travel to Germany while his future is resolved.

A number of high-profile players have moved to Saudi Arabia this summer, including former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and ex-Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante.

Former Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino joined Al-Ahli after his Anfield contract expired, and Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has also been linked with the club.

Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland in a deal worth £20m in June 2011.

Henderson made 43 appearances for the Reds last season as they endured a disappointing campaign, finishing fifth in the Premier League and missing out on a place in the Champions League.

Overall, he has played 492 times for the Reds, scoring 33 goals and registering 57 assists.

Henderson was captain when Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 before going on to win the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup later that year.

He was also the Reds skipper when the club won the 2019-20 Premier League title to end a 30-year wait for the English top-flight title.

Henderson’s other honours at Liverpool include winning the FA Cup in 2022 and League Cup in 2012 and 2022.

Henderson has been criticised by LGBTQ+ campaigners over the proposed move, as same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Saudi Arabia. The player has publicly supported the LGBTQ+ community in the past.

Havertz Scores As Arsenal Beat MLS All-Stars 5-0

At Audi Field on Tuesday, in a well-attended skills challenge, Kai Havertz had 14 goes at the cross and volley competition. He failed with all 14.

Fast forward 24 hours and when Marquinhos sent a cross to the far post from the right wing in the final minute of Arsenal’s 5-0 win against Major League Soccer’s All-Stars, Havertz steadied himself, controlled on his chest and smashed a strike into the far corner.

That’s the thing about football. Deliver when it matters.

Evidently, there will be nights that matter far more than this for Arsenal.

Yet, on a sweltering evening, in front of a crowd in excess of 20,000 at Audi Field, the majority of whom were Gunners supporters and who cheered co-chair Josh Kroenke when he was introduced as part of the pre-match presentation party, Havertz was not alone in feeling satisfied with his performance.

It’s a footnote but it was the biggest win ever by a European side in the All-Star game.

“Really pleased,” was manager Mikel Arteta’s assessment after goals from Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard, Jorginho, Gabriel Martinelli and Havertz gave his side victory.

Havertz can be Arteta’s flexible friend

When social media clips of his efforts on Tuesday started doing the rounds, they generated a lot of sarcastic responses, something he experienced during his time at Chelsea, which could be described as erratic.

Yet, in the end, he was being asked to play a role he was ill suited to.

Arteta wants Havertz as a flexible attacking player. Evidently, Jesus will play as a central striker but the German was pushed up alongside him near the end after initially being introduced on the left of a three-man midfield, operating ahead of Jorginho, who was the anchor.

“He gives us something different with his quality and his height,” said Arteta.

“For example, he can be the target man if we need to beat the press. He’s playing at the attacking midfield position for now but I’m sure throughout the season he’ll be used in different positions.”

Timber catches the eye

Jurrien Timber’s arrival at Arsenal has almost gone under the radar.

Signed from Ajax in a £34m deal after Arsenal won a battle involving numerous Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Timber’s signing was announced less than 24 hours before Declan Rice’s much more high-profile move from West Ham.

Even in Washington, he came on at the same time as Rice, ensuring most eyes were trained on the England man as he settled himself in for the final 26 minutes.

But it soon became obvious Timber will have a significant role this season.

When Arsenal had the ball, he slipped into the inverted midfield role Arteta’s former boss Pep Guardiola has introduced at Manchester City.

The Netherlands international looked confident on the ball, is quick and can pass. He also spots danger and slips easily into the position of a more orthodox right-sided defender.

“He is a really versatile player,” said Arteta. “He gives you the capacity to invert and occupy different spaces. He’s so comfortable on the ball in that phase.

“As well as that, he’s got aggression in the duels and that dynamism which I really like. You saw with his first action, which was a high press, he won the ball straight away, won the duel and was ready to go.

“He is going to be a really important player for us.”

Trossard to be checked

Arsenal now move on to New Jersey, where they will take on Manchester United at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.

Arteta said Trossard would be assessed after needing treatment for an injury that triggered his immediate withdrawal.

“We don’t want to take any risks at this stage,” said Arteta. “He had some pain and we’ll see how he is tomorrow but I don’t expect it to be anything big.”

Sarcoma Awareness Month 2023; “Let’s Talk About The Forgotten Cancer”

Sarcomas are uncommon tumours that can arise in the fatty and fibrous tissues, blood vessels, muscles, bones, nerves, cartilage, tendons, and bones.

Almost any portion of the body, whether on the inside or outside, might be affected.

There are two main kinds of sarcoma. The most common type of sarcoma is the soft tissue sarcoma.

It develops in the soft parts of the body like muscles or blood vessels. The other type is bone sarcoma which develops in the bones.

Sarcomas come in more than 70 different varieties, not just one. The type of sarcoma, its location, and other characteristics all influence how it is treated.

Sarcoma is an extremely uncommon adult cancer that makes up just 1% of all adult cancers.

Comparatively few persons are diagnosed with sarcoma each year compared to some of the more frequent cancers, despite the fact that it is slightly more common in children (approximately 20% of paediatric malignancies).

Sarcoma Awareness Month, which lasts the entire month of July, aims to spread knowledge about what is known as the “forgotten cancer.”

The topic for sarcoma cancer awareness month in 2023 is “Let’s talk about the Forgotten Cancer,” with the goal of increasing awareness of sarcoma and bone cancer, which are usually referred to as the “forgotten cancer” due to their rarity.

Education is the first step in observing Sarcoma Awareness Month. Spend some time learning about sarcomas in all of their varieties because they are such uncommon cancers and few people are familiar with them.

Next, learn how to spot sarcoma symptoms so you’ll be prepared to consult a doctor if any of these symptoms manifest.

Few resources have been dedicated to sarcoma research and therapy because it is such an uncommon type of cancer. It is feasible to draw attention to the problem and, ideally, increase support for these vital causes by raising awareness during Sarcoma Awareness Month.

Babu Owino Moved Out Of Wang’uru Police Station Under Tight Security

Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino was on Thursday, July 20, 2023, escorted out of Wang’uru police station, Kirinyaga county to an unknown destination under tight police escort.

This comes even as the MP’s family, friends and relatives pitched camp at the station demanding his release. Officers were forced to eject them as they chanted uniformly.

Tunataka Babu. Babu apelekwe kotini hajaua mtu” they chanted.

Babu Owino was on Tuesday night arrested under unclear circumstances.

His arrest came ahead of the highly-anticipated anti-government protests staged by members of the opposition led by Raila Odinga.

So far, a section of leaders allied to the opposition have demanded his release and his wife has also appealed to Raila to help secure his release.

His lawyer, Duncan Okatch, has filed an application for the MP to be taken to Milimani High Court today.

In his application, Okatch is seeking orders to compel the Inspector of Police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to present Babu before the High Court.

Okatch argued that the aforementioned authorities forcefully arrested the MP.

“An order that the 1st respondent and or his representatives appear in person or by his duly authorised agents together with the original of any warrant or order of detention to show cause why the applicant should not be released forthwith,” his lawyer stated.

Russia’s Putin Will Not Attend BRICS Summit: South Africa

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend a BRICS nations summit in South Africa next month, the country’s presidency said on Wednesday, ending months of speculation.

Putin’s potential visit has been a thorny diplomatic issue for South Africa.

The Russian leader is the target of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant — a provision that Pretoria as an ICC member would be expected to implement were he to set foot in the country.

“By mutual agreement, President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation will not attend the summit, but the Russian Federation will be represented by Foreign Minister Mr (Sergei) Lavrov,” Vincent Magwenya, a spokesman for President Cyril Ramaphosa, said in a statement.

The decision follows “a number of consultations” held by Ramaphosa in recent months, the most recent of which took place “last night,” Magwenya said.

South Africa is the current chair of the BRICS group, a gathering of heavyweights that also includes Brazil, Russia, India and China, which sees itself as a counterweight to Western economic domination.

Putin was formally invited to BRICS summit due to take place in Johannesburg between August 22 and 24, but Pretoria has been under heavy domestic and international pressure not to host him.

“President Ramaphosa is confident that the Summit will be a success and calls on the nation to extend the necessary hospitality to the many delegates who will arrive from various parts of the continent and the globe,” Magwenya said.

Putin is sought by the ICC over accusations that Russia unlawfully deported Ukrainian children.

Netflix Adds 6 Million Subscribers After Password Crackdown

Netflix on Wednesday said subscriptions to the media streaming service climbed by nearly 6 million in the wake of its crackdown on password sharing.

The streaming giant finished the recently ended quarter with a total of 238 million subscribers and a profit of $1.5 billion, according to an earnings release.

The pickup in subscribers came as a potentially crippling writers and actors strike hits the US entertainment industry, but with analysts saying Netflix is better positioned than its rivals to weather the storm.

“We are constantly at the table negotiating with everyone across the industry,” Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos said during an earnings presentation.

“We need to get to this strike to a conclusion so that we can all move forward.”

Revenue came in lower than expectations with Netflix posting $8.2 billion in sales over the April to June period, pushing the company’s shares down more than 8 percent in after hours trading on Wall Street.

Netflix in May expanded its crackdown on users sharing passwords with people beyond their immediate family as it seeks to shore up revenue after a rough patch last year.

Earlier this year the company complained that more than 100 million households were sharing accounts at the service.

“Let’s face it, the crackdown on passwords is working,” Navellier and Associates chief investment officer Louis Navellier said of Netflix.

“I was ecstatic with the results; I think they hit the ball out of the park with subscriber growth.”

In its earning statement, the company said that the policy would expand to all its markets worldwide.

To convert non-paying users, Netflix has introduced “borrower” or “shared” accounts, in which subscribers can add extra viewers for a higher price or transfer viewing profiles to new accounts.

Netflix launched an ad-subsidized offering around the same time as the crackdown, and on Wednesday eliminated its lowest priced ad-free plan that cost $10 a month in the US.

“The decision to cut its basic tier is an effort to bolster advertising by elevating the price difference between its advertising and non-advertising tiers,” said Insider Intelligence principal analyst Ross Benes.

A Netflix ad-supported subscription is available in the United States for $7 monthly.

“Building an ads business from scratch isn’t easy and we have lots of hard work ahead, but we’re confident that over time we can develop advertising into a multi-billion dollar incremental revenue stream,” Netflix said in the letter to shareholders.

Benes estimates that Netflix will generate $770 million in advertising revenue in the US this year, and more than $1 billion by 2024.

“Netflix’s increased focus on password sharing will occur alongside heightened pressure to expand ad revenue,” Benes said.

“As the service’s subscriber base plateaus in more countries, Netflix will focus on moving price-sensitive freeloaders to its cheaper ad-supported plan.”

– Actors on strike –

The earnings report came as Netflix and other film and television makers see productions halted by an actors and writers strike in the United States.

“The share price is down a bit after market; there is worry they will run out of content because of the Hollywood strike,” Navellier told AFP.

Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) members joined writers who have been on strike for weeks, triggering the first industry-wide walkout for 63 years and effectively shutting down Hollywood.

“Our experts say that Netflix is best positioned to weather the strike compared to competitors, but it could start to feel pressure if its content pipeline gets increasingly strained,” said Third Bridge analyst Jamie Lumley.

Sarandos said on an earnings call in April that the company has a “pretty robust slate of releases” and a large base of upcoming films and shows from around the world to help it endure a strike.

The company touted the success of fresh “Murder Mystery” and “Extraction” films, as well as series such as “Bridgerton,” “The Witcher,” and “Never Have I Ever.”

“This year we’ll have more returning seasons than any other streamer,” Netflix told shareholders, sharing a list that included “The Crown” and “Virgin River.”

‘Kidnapped’ Nurse’s Disturbing Google Searches Moments Before Vanishing

The nurse who claimed to be kidnapped made a number of suspicious internet searches the day she went disappeared.

Law enforcement in Alabama initially reported that Carlee Russell disappeared from the side of the I-495 interstate after she made the 911 call near Hoover, Alabama 9.34 pm on Thursday, July 13.

In the call, she claimed she got out of the car after seeing a “baby boy in a diaper” walking along the road.

Her disappearance sparked a frantic manhunt which generated $62,000 in donations – before she reappeared at her parent’s house on Saturday night.

In a press conference on July 19, Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said: “We have been unable to verify most of her initial statements, and we have no reason to believe there is a threat to public safety.”

Investigators looked through her phone data after the device was left at the scene and looked up various things.

Ms Russell’s worrying internet searches were described by police as “very relevant.”

In the days leading up to her disappearance, she had tried to research: “Do you have to pay for an Amber Alert?”

On the day of her disappearance, her Google searches included: “How to take money from a register without being caught?”

She also looked up “Birmingham bus station” and “one-way ticket from Birmingham to Nashville.”

She researched the movie ‘Taken,’ which is about a kidnapping.

Food bought at a local Target before her alleged kidnapping were not found by officers.

Her phone, wig and Apple Watch were found in her car.

In an earlier statement, Hoover Police said it is “not in a position to reveal all of the information we have gathered at this point,” but confirmed no additional calls about a lone toddler were received.

The force said: “The Hoover Police Department has not located any evidence of a toddler walking down the interstate despite numerous vehicles passing through that area as depicted by the traffic camera surveillance video.”

The mystery surrounding the nursing student continues after she suddenly turned up at the home she shares with her mum and dad on Saturday.

While the pair were on the phone, the girlfriend heard Carlee scream before she stopped responding, leaving her brother’s girlfriend just listening to the sounds of the passing highway.

Her car was found by the side of the road, with her belongings nearby. But just two days later, on Saturday, July 15, police received a call that Carlee had returned home.

Police in Harpersville, about 30 miles east of Hoover, said Carlee was “handling some business” in their town on the day of her disappearance. Police did not say what she was doing there but later clarified she “was not at the Harpersville Police Department.”

It was previously reported that Carlee “stopped to check on the child” after calling the cops and then called her brother’s girlfriend.

Azimio Condemns ‘Arrests And Abduction’ Of Azimio Leaders

Azimio la Umoja Coalition has strongly condemned the “reported arrest and abduction” of Azimio leaders in the wake of planned 3-day protests.

In a statement on Wednesday, Narc Kenya party leader  Martha Karua on behalf of Azimio termed the actions as illegal and aimed at paralysing the protests.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the arrests of Azimio leaders and close associates of leaders without any colour of right or lightest justification,” she said.

Karua says the arrests “are a desperate attempt by the illegitimate Ruto regime to paralyze Azimio and stop its top leaders and to sabotage the exercise of the constitutional right of peaceful demonstrations.”

Karua, who ran as Raila’s running mate in the last presidential election further demanded the release of the aforementioned lawmakers noting that the ‘struggle continues’.

“We demand the immediate release of those detained noting that their detention is not only malicious but also unlawful. We further demand respect for our constitution and law.”

She stated that Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino was arrested by police on Tuesday night and is currently being held incommunicado, with his whereabouts remaining unknown.

“Today Ken Chonga, MP Kilifi South, and Hon. Teddy Mwambire, Speaker Kilifi County have been arrested and detained in an unknown place,” Karua added.

Nairobi MCAs Wilfred Odallo (Mabatini), Redson Onyango (Ngei ), Erick Otieno and Anthony Otsulawho who are budget officers at the Nairobi County Assembly have also been arrested.

Raila Odinga’s bodyguard Maurice Ogeta is said to be abducted by police on his way to work.

Dennis Onyango (Raila’s Spokesman)  was arrested from his house where a search without warrant was conducted.
