History-Making Dutch PM Rutte Quits Politics

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced Monday he was quitting politics after nearly 13 years in power, in a shocking end to his time as the longest-serving leader in the history of the Netherlands.

Nicknamed “Teflon Mark” for surviving scandals that hit his four governments, the centre-right leader said he would stand down after elections sparked by the collapse of his latest coalition over a row about migration.

The second longest-serving leader in the European Union, the 56-year-old Rutte said that he had “mixed feelings” about bowing out but that it “feels good to pass the baton”.

The bike-riding, frugal-living premier has steered the Netherlands through more than a decade of economic upheaval and the Covid pandemic, relying on a “Mr Normal” image to appeal to voters.

He had been widely expected to seek a fifth term in elections due some time after mid-November, but made the surprise announcement during a debate on Friday’s fall of the coalition.

“I would like to say something personal. There has been speculation over the past few days about what motivates me. The only answer is the Netherlands,” Rutte told stunned lawmakers.

“Yesterday morning, I took the decision that I am no longer suitable to be the new leader of the VVD (his party). When the new government is sworn in after the elections, I will quit politics.”

‘Feels good’

The coalition government collapsed on Friday over Rutte’s plans to cut numbers of family members from war zones who are allowed to reunite with asylum seekers in the Netherlands.

Rutte had pledged to curb the numbers of arrivals following a scandal last year over overcrowded migration centres, in which a baby died and hundreds of refugees were forced to sleep outdoors.

But the ChristenUnie — a Christian Democratic party — and the center-left Democracy 66 had strongly opposed Rutte’s plan.

Dutch media said Rutte had given the other parties an ultimatum to look tough on migration for hardliners within his own People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy.

Rutte told reporters after his announcement in parliament that he had “mixed feelings.”

“This is not entirely without emotion,” he was quoted as saying by public broadcaster NOS. “But it feels good to pass the baton.”

The most significant event of his time in power was the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014, Rutte added.

The majority of the 298 victims of the plane, which was travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, were Dutch.

“That was so big,” he said.

What next?

Tributes to Rutte came in from home and abroad, as questions began to be asked about who will replace him.

The prime minister of neighbouring EU ally Belgium, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, tweeted: “Thank you for everything, Mark. Not only the Netherlands will miss you.”

Rutte’s domestic rivals, including far-right leader Geert Wilders, praised him despite their differences.

“Your choices were not ours, but you made them with conviction and that deserves a lot of respect,” Wilders, the leader of the anti-Islam PVV party, said in parliament.

Opposition parties scrapped a planned no-confidence motion in parliament that would have toppled him as caretaker premier.

While Rutte said it was good to pass the baton, there are no obvious successors in Rutte’s own party.

And the elections for a post-Rutte era now promise to be some of the most divisive in a generation.

An upstart farmers party that opposes EU-backed environmental rules and came first in senate elections earlier this year is hoping to repeat its success.

The Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB)’s leader Caroline van der Plas had refused to serve in a coalition with Rutte.

Rutte meanwhile has been tipped for a top job at NATO, whose leadership is due to come up next year.

But Rutte said he did not want the job. Instead, he indicated he would continue his work as a part-time teacher in The Hague,

“Maybe I’ll do that for a few days,” he told reporters.

We Will Deal With You Firmly And Decisively, Kindiki To Azimio On Planned Demos

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has cautioned the opposition against proceeding with anti-government protests scheduled for Wednesday, July 12.

Speaking at Igoji, Imenti South during the installation of the new Deputy County Commissioner in Igoji Sub-County in Meru County, Kindiki said that the Government will triumph in the war against terrorism and violent extremism.

“On Friday during the mass protests, six people were killed and others injured, including security officers. Freedom of association and the right to demonstrate does not include the right to cause mayhem and loot property. On Wednesday, security officers are under firm instruction to deal with those disrupting peace, destroying property, and injuring people,” Kindiki said.

The CS added that those planning to cause mayhem, looting, chaos, and bloodshed will be dealt with ‘decisively ‘ and that “nobody is above the law”.

Azimio coalition Party leader, Raila Amollo Odinga on Friday announced mass demonstrations will continue.

“I just arrived in the CBD in a matatu and I know what you people are going through. The high cost of fuel has led to matatu operators to increase fares and I blame it on this inept administration,” Odinga told a charged crowd in the Central Business District on Monday, July 10.

Odinga said that Kenyans will return to the streets not just in Nairobi but across the country on Wednesday to champion their rights and exercise their democratic right peacefully and in an organized manner.

Court Declines To Lift Orders Suspending Finance Act

High court justice Mugure Thande has declined to set aside orders on the Finance Bill 2023.

The judge ruled that the petitioners have proved that they have a case adding that if the orders were to be lifted the public stands to suffer.

“The petitioners have proved that they have a prima facie case….there’s merit in granting conservatory orders,” the judge noted.

The judge further directed that the file be forwarded to chief justice Martha Koome to appoint a three-judge bench who will hear and determine the matter.

Further, while declining to delve into the merits of the case, the judge noted that if the orders are not reserved then there’s danger in rendering the case as nugatory and an academic exercise.

Similarly, the judge said that Lifting the conservatory orders will be against the public as there will be a real risk of the public being subjected to unconstitutional laws that have been challenged.

In the case, Busia senator Okiyab Omtatah and others moved to court to challenge the Finance Bill 2023 saying that it’s Unconstitutional.

The State through the AG lawyers led by Githu Muigai wanted the orders granted two weeks ago lifted.

Will Raila’s Signature Collection Be Enough To Oust President Ruto?

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has launched a petition to remove President William Ruto from power by next week, citing Article 1, clauses One and Two of the Constitution.

However, the Constitution states that a president can only be removed by Parliament and on two grounds: impeachment or incapacity.

In the case of impeachment, a legislator moves a motion for impeachment on three grounds, with the support of at least one-third of all MPs.

They include a gross violation of a provision of the Constitution or any other law, compelling evidence that the President committed a crime under national or international law, or gross misconduct.

If the motion is supported by at least two-thirds of all National Assembly members, the Speaker will notify his Senate counterpart within two days.

The Senate Speaker will convene a meeting of the Senate to hear the charges against the President within seven days of receiving the National Assembly’s resolution.

By resolution, the Senate establishes a special committee of 11 senators to investigate the matter. The special committee is tasked with investigating the allegations against the President and reporting back to the Senate within 10 days on whether they are substantiated.

During the special committee’s investigations, the President has the right to appear and be represented in order for them to determine one of two things.

If the special committee determines that the particulars of any allegations have not been substantiated, no further proceedings under Article 145 are to be initiated in relation to that allegation.

If the special committee finds that the specifics of any of the allegations levelled against the President are true, the Senate will allow the President to be heard.

The House will then vote on the impeachment charges. According to the article, if at least two-thirds of all Senate members vote to uphold any impeachment charge, the President will be removed from office.

According to Article 144 of the Constitution, incapacity will be based on either mental or physical incapacity that prevents the head of state from performing their duties.

This procedure involves Parliament, the Chief Justice, and a tribunal that prepares a report to determine whether or not the president is capable.

If the report finds the President incapable, the MPs will vote on it. If a majority of all members vote to ratify the report, the President will be removed from office.

The big question Kenyans are asking themselves is: Will the signature collection initiative which was kickstarted by the opposition leader be able to remove President Ruto from office?

Jua Cali Apologises For Claiming Njugush Is Not Funny At All

Veteran rapper Paul Julius Nunda aka Jua Cali slammed comedian Timothy Kimani Ndegwa, popularly known by his stage name Njugush, over his performance in Australia.

Njugush, who is on a tour of Australia, was trolled after a video of him struggling to crack up the audience in the island nation went viral on social media.

“Njugush ni boy wangu but hakuna comedian hapo, not funny at all,” Jua Cali said while laughing at a video of Njugush struggling to crack jokes as the audience in Australia remained silent like water in a pot.

This statement got him a lot of backlash from the public and people ended up coming for his craft as a musician.

The musician has put out a statement apologizing for his statements and said that he is a huge fan of stand-up comedy.

“Nimekua a huge Fan of StandUp comedy as an art form ever since nione the great Richard Pryor kwa ma Video tapes hii ni kitambo. Then Eddie Murphy came along killed it on the standUp stage….”

Jua Cali then compared the art of comedy to music in the essence of comedians can’t repeat a joke, unlike music whereby a song can be repeated over and over.

” …Standup comedian has to have a huge team of dope writers ndio special ikue na structure, examples of dope writers wale nawajua ni YY na Butita(Iam the one who encouraged @eddiebutita to do 1hr specials when we were on a flight to Dubai a few yrs back)…”

Nairobi: 70 Protesters Arrested During Saba Saba Protests Freed

Over 70 people who were arrested last week during the Saba Saba protests on Friday have been released.

This comes after the prosecutor informed the court on Monday that he had received instructions not to charge the individuals.

The opposition organised Friday’s protests across the country to picket against the high cost of living.

However, in Nairobi, where opposition leader Raila Odinga led a rally at Kamukunji Grounds, police engaged in running battles with protesters, and dozens were arrested and taken into custody at the Central Police Station.

The release of the activists comes a day after police lobbed teargas at individuals from various lobby groups who camped at the Central Police Station to demand release of the protesters.

Led by former Chief Justice Willie Mutunga, the activists drawn from the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), Haki Kenya, and Kenya Bora Tutakayo, accused the police of effecting unlawful arrests against peaceful protesters.

“The right to liberty and security of the person is a fundamental right protected by the constitution…Arbitrary arrests violate these principles and must be addressed,” KHRC said in a statement.

The activists wanted the protesters freed unconditionally but their attempts bore no fruits.

“We are extremely disappointed by this action by the police, which comes 60 years after independence. Coming 30 years after multi-party politics. It comes 13 years after the adoption of the new constitution,” KHRC’s Davis Malombe said.

New Five-Year Deal For Celtic ‘Heartbeat’ McGregor

Captain Callum McGregor has signed a new five-year contract with Celtic.

The 30-year-old Scotland midfielder has been with the Scottish champions since the age of nine and made his debut in July 2014.

He has scored 62 goals in 420 games and won 20 trophies with the club, including five domestic trebles.

“He’s the heartbeat of this team,” said manager Brendan Rodgers, who added it was “extra special to have someone of that quality as captain”.

Rodgers called McGregor an “inspirational player – that’s undervalued immensely”.

He said: “It’s not really until you work with Callum that you really recognise the qualities that he has, firstly as a player because that’s the priority, to develop him as a footballer, but also as a person because he’s a great man, and it’s been great to see that development, from the time I was first with him and now coming back four years later and seeing him evolve even more.

“He’s a real selfless leader and for me to have someone lead the team like that and be my coach on the field, it’s a great privilege to work with him.”

McGregor took over the captaincy in 2021 following the departure of Scott Brown and has led Celtic to five trophies.

“It’s amazing to extend my stay,” he told the club website. “This club means so much to me and the success that we’ve had over the past few seasons has cemented that.

“I’m hugely proud of what I’ve achieved at this club so far.

“They’ve given me an unbelievable platform to be successful and my duty is to give absolutely everything for this club and do everything I can to make it successful.

“I feel like the club’s in a great place to move forward as well. I’m delighted that the manager’s back, I’m delighted that I’m going to be here long-term as well, so here’s to many more successful years.”

Free Agent Townsend Training With Burnley

Free agent Andros Townsend is training with newly promoted Premier League side Burnley after leaving Everton following the expiry of his contract.

Townsend, 31, has earned 13 England caps but missed the entirety of last season because of a knee injury.

The former Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Newcastle player last featured in a first-team game in March 2022.

Townsend could earn a deal for Burnley manager Vincent Kompany after the side won the Championship title last season.

The Clarets are also closing in on a season-long loan deal for Soumaila Coulibaly, with the Borussia Dortmund defender scheduled to have a medical with the club on Monday.

They are also expected to sign England Under-21 international goalkeeper James Trafford after agreeing a £15m deal with champions Manchester City.

Chelsea Reveal New Shirt – But No Sponsor

Chelsea have revealed their home kit for the 2023-24 season without a front-of-shirt sponsor.

A shirt deal with telecommunications company Three was not renewed when it expired at the end of last season.

The Premier League blocked a deal with streaming service Paramount+, because of concerns about upsetting its broadcast rights holders.

Chelsea decided against a shirt sponsorship agreement with an online gambling company.

The club’s supporters’ trust had spoken out against such a partnership, although it is understood Chelsea had already ruled a deal before that.

In April, the Premier League announced that gambling sponsors would be withdrawn from the front of shirts by the end of the 2025-26 season.

Chelsea say the shirt will go on sale on the website and in their shop on 16 August, three days after their opening Premier League game against Liverpool. It will go on wide sale on 23 August.

Turkana Benchmarks On Kiambu’s Healthcare System

In a collaboration aimed at improving medical provisions and services, Turkana County Government embarked on a benchmarking mission to Kiambu County.

Led by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Health Services Dr. Apalia Anthony, the Turkana delegation sought to gain valuable insights from the health department.

Thika Level 5 hospital hosted the CECM team for a full day bench marking activity, led by CECM Health Services Kiambu County Dr. Elias Maina and the Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Patrick Nyaga, with support from the County Department of Health and the Centre for Health Solutions (CHS).

They expressed their willingness to host the Turkana County Government team and emphasized the importance of knowledge sharing and collaboration between the two counties.

Dr. Apalia commended Thika Level 5 Hospital for their prudent management of resources, especially the facility improvement fund that is financing the health projects.

He emphasized the value of benchmarking exercises for driving positive change and learning from successful healthcare systems.

“We have noted the remarkable achievements the county has made in enhancing healthcare access and quality, and we are here to learn so that when we go back home to implement the best practices and lessons we encounter,” he said.

During the visit, the hospital’s medical superintendent Dr. Nyaga assisted by county, facility and CHS staff interacted with the delegation from Turkana, where they engaged in various discussions exploring innovative strategies, technologies and policies implemented by the department to improve health outcomes.

Areas of interest were the ongoing infrastructural development, radiology center, medical waste disposal mechanisms, automated revenue collection and health management systems.

Speaking to KNA, Dr. Nyaga said that the initiative aimed to equip the officers with the necessary knowledge and skills to become effective agents of change in their respective counties.

“In steps towards empowering healthcare in their respective county, the health promotion officers have embarked on this venture, which is an investment in their professional development. We recognise the vital role healthcare plays in all counties and the role these officers play in promoting health and well-being at the grass roots level. We have therefore made sure that we delve into a wide range of strategies and practices so that our counterparts receive education on the latest evidence-based practices in health promotion. We are confident that they will be able to redesign and implement the information they acquire here to their targeted communities according to their unique needs,” said Nyaga.

The delegation would also acquire essential skills in effective communication and community engagement that would empower them to foster healthier lifestyles.

Kiambu County Government has allocated over Sh5 billion in the 2022/23 financial year towards healthcare financing. Last year, the County employed over 500 healthcare workers to meet the recommended patient-to-healthcare worker ratio.
