Siaya: Police Officer Shoots Wife, Turns Gun on Self

According to reports, a police constable assigned to Bondo Police Station in Siaya County shot himself dead on Friday after a domestic dispute with his wife, whom he allegedly shot and injured before turning the gun on himself.

Bondo Sub-county Police Commander Ibrahim Kosi confirmed the incident, saying that the deceased officer, Michael Kyalo, arrived at work as usual and was given a rifle.

Instead of going to his assigned post, Kyalo went to his house, where the incident occurred.

“This morning, we had an unfortunate incident where one of my officers Michael Kyalo shot himself. He was issued with a rifle to proceed for work but before that he returned to his house where we believe he got into an argument with his wife before shooting her.  He then shot himself in the head,” said Kosi.

Kyalo’s wife, who was shot in the buttocks, is being treated at Bondo Sub-County Hospital, while the deceased’s body has been moved to the same facility’s mortuary.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Nairobi Couple Implicated In Armed Robbery Case

A man and his wife have been pointed out as key suspects during a police identification parade as the key suspects in a violent robbery that left Mwananchi Credit Limited Director Dennis Mwombo Mwangeka severely wounded.

At the same time Elizabeth Wachuka Kibochi of Day Kio Appartments in Lavington Estate testifying in the case, expressed shock that a tenant he assisted to locate a Sh25million house to purchase was the main suspect in an attack that occurred seven years ago.

Ms. Kibochi identified before court Dishon Peter Mulinge alias Peter Kinuthia alias Swaleh Mulinge and his wife Emma Nyambura Wairimu alias Jane Wairimu Maina as the tenants she had rented a house two days before Mwangeka was attacked by robbers armed with two M-16 rifles and a mini-pistol.

“Are these the two suspects you identified at the Police Station the ones you had rented House Number B-10 on October 7, 2015,” defence lawyer Danstan Omari asked Ms. Kibochi.

“Yes, they are the ones. Mulinge introduced Jane Wairimu as his wife when he rented the apartment after paying rent at Family Bank of Sh160,000,” the manager answered.

At the police station, she said she successfully identified the two as they were familiar since Jane had dreads and Mulinge was towering and heavily built.

“Are there other special features that made you identify the two as the suspects who attacked Mwombo,” Omari asked.

“I had interacted with them previously so I had no problems in picking them from the three women and three men presented by police in the parade,” Ms Kibochi answered.

Ms. Kibochi was testifying in a case where Mulinge and his wife Jane are charged with violently robbing at gun-point Mwombo Sh80,000, a golden ring worth Sh150,000 and a wristwatch valued at Sh100,000 on the night of October 31 and November 1, 2015.

They have denied five counts of robbery with violence, being in illegal possession of two M-16 rifles and 33 rounds of ammunition.

The hearing resumes on August 7, 2023. They are out on bond.

Bonfires, Teargas As Saba Saba Protests Gain Momentum

Bonfires have been lit in various towns including Homa Bay and Kisumu as Saba Saba protests led by the Opposition are gaining momentum across the country.

In parts of Nairobi city, a group of protestors was seen around the former Hilton Hotel.

They were calling on the government to reduce the cost of living.

Several people have been arrested over the same.

In Kisumu, roads have been blocked and fires lit as locals took to the streets to answer Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s call for protest.

Police officers are currently on standby in different areas within the city.

In Mombasa, activists and residents also took to the streets early to protest over the high cost of living.

Police were, however, forced to lob teargas canisters to disperse the activists holding demonstrations in Mombasa.

The activists had on Friday morning carried colourful placards as they chanted, ‘We go! We go!’ before they were dispersed by the police.

Earlier on Friday, reports said that a section of youths in Mathare had blocked the Thika Superhighway and were stoning vehicles.

Videos circulating on Twitter showed multiple vehicles making U-turns.

Police, however, arrived on time and dispersed the youth.

The government has beefed up security across the country and counties believed to be hotspots for violence.

Raila Odinga is expected to lead a rally at the Kamukunji Grounds to launch a signature collection exercise and possibly the second phase of anti-government protests.

His Azimio co-principals will also launch the protests in other parts of the country.

This is part of the opposition’s strategy to have its supporters own up to the resistance from the grassroots and ramp up their pressure against President William Ruto’s administration.

France Star Footballer Mbappe Visits Father’s Native Cameroon

France’s star footballer Kylian Mbappe arrived in Cameroon to an ecstatic welcome from fans Thursday for a visit that includes charity work with deaf children and a trip to his father’s village.

Many among the hundreds who greeted the 24-year-old forward were dressed in his Paris Saint-Germain team’s football jersey for the occasion.

They wildly shouted out his name as he emerged from the terminal at the airport in the capital Yaounde, according to an AFP journalist.

A group of about a hundred traditional dancers performed in his honour. Smiling widely, the footballer saluted from afar the crowd who were kept at a distance by police, before being whisked away in an SUV with tinted windows.

Mbappe, who is also captain of France’s national team, will stay during his visit lasting several days at a hotel complex belonging to the family of French former tennis champion Yannick Noah, who lives in Yaounde.

On Friday, he is due to visit a school for youngsters who are deaf and hard of hearing in the capital’s suburbs, according to his itinerary seen by AFP.

He is also set to take part in a basketball match, with expectations it will involve retired NBA player Joakim Noah, the son of Yannick. Later on, he takes part in a football match against the local team FC Vent d’Etoudi.

Saturday sees him head south to visit Djebale, his father Wilfried Mbappe’s village. His father left Cameroon at a young age for France where he became a football trainer.

Six Die In Land Conflict In Northern DR Congo

At least six people have been killed in a conflict over land in northern DR Congo that has already claimed dozens of lives, local officials said Thursday.

Armed men on Monday attacked the village of Babusoko, 35 kilometres (22 miles) from Kisangani, the capital of Tshopo province, they said.

“We buried five people yesterday (Wednesday) in the village. The sixth victim, a child (aged 18 months) died here in Kisangani from injuries to the stomach,” Baudouin Kayombo, the mayor of Lubunga district, told AFP.

Citing a police report, the official said the attack was carried out by a group of people “who came out of the bush.”

The violence was the latest episode in a months-long conflict between members of the Mbole and Lengola ethnic groups, local civil society representative Heritier Isomela said.

He put the toll at seven dead, with four seriously injured and four missing.

Questioned by AFP Wednesday, Norbert Lokula, a provincial interior and security minister, said “a militia comprising Mbole members” was behind the attack.

He condemned “acts of barbarism” carried out during the incursion.

Babusoko is inhabited mostly by members of the Lengola community.

Tensions appear to have started in April after the Lengola people sold land to a company without consulting the Mbole community beforehand.

Intercommunal violence related to land and property in the Lubunga region this year led to at least 55 deaths and displaced around 50,000 people, the UN’s humanitarian coordination office OCHA said last month.

More than 700 houses were also burned down, it added.

Disputes over land can frequently turn deadly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a vast but impoverished central African country of about 100 million people.

In the west of the country, a conflict between the Teke and Yaka people, triggered by a dispute over customary tithes, has killed 300 people since last year, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).

Violence also mars much of eastern DR Congo, where roving militias have wreaked havoc for three decades — a legacy of regional wars that flared in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Four Killed As Russian Attack Hits Lviv Apartment Building

A Russian missile struck an apartment building in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on Thursday, killing at least four people and injuring nine others.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said the missile also damaged around 60 apartments and 50 cars. Sadovyi described the attack as the largest against the city’s civilian infrastructure since Russia’s invasion began last year.

“There will definitely be a response to the enemy. A tangible one,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Telegram.

Lviv is located near Ukraine’s border with Poland, far from the frontline areas in eastern and southern Ukraine that have been the focus of much of the recent fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Ukraine counteroffensive

In an interview with CNN broadcast on Wednesday, Zelenskyy said he wanted to launch a counteroffensive earlier, but that the timing was dependent on getting military aid from Ukraine’s U.S. and European partners.

Ukraine began the counteroffensive last month, aiming to reclaim territory occupied by Russia since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.

Ukrainian officials have sought ammunition and more advanced weapons, including air defence systems and fighter jets, in order to match up with Russia’s military capabilities.

“I wanted our counteroffensive to happen much earlier because everyone understood that if the counteroffensive unfolds later, then a bigger part of our territory will be mined,” Zelenskyy told CNN. “We give our enemy the time and possibility to place more mines and prepare their defensive lines.”

He reiterated his case for Ukraine to receive F-16 fighter jets, saying having the planes is not about gaining an aerial advantage, but rather “being equal” to Russia’s forces.

Denmark said last week that training for Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16s had begun.

Kenya Police Complete Signing Of Kenneth Muguna

Kenyan international midfielder Kenneth Muguna is officially a Kenya Police player.

The development, announced by the FKF Premier League club early Friday morning, indicates that the 27 year old, who was a free agent, officially penned a contract with the club after completing his medicals.

The length of the contract was however not indicated.

“Kenyan international Kenneth Muguna has officially penned down a contract with the biggest club in Africa after completing his medical,” the club wrote on Friday.

The move for Muguna hence becomes Francis Baraza’s first signing at the club and the first of many names expected to come through the door this offseason.

Multiple sources close to the club have indicated serious interest in snapping up Kariobangi Sharks midfielder Tyson Otieno, with all indications pointing to the fact that the deal will be completed in a few days’ time.

On signing for Police, Muguna said: “I know how amazing it feels to win and what it takes to do it.”

Muguna became a free agent early June, announcing his departure from his former club Azam FC – that finished third in the recently concluded 2022-23 Tanzanian Premier League season – thereby marking an end to his two-year stay at the club he joined in July 2021.

“It was a great experience, I enjoyed those 2 years #AdiosAzam,” he wrote then.

His stay in Tanzania teetered close to the end as he struggled to get playing time and was dropped from the matchday squad that saw Azam fall to Yanga SC by a solitary goal in the final of the Azam Sports Federation Cup.

A return to the FKF Premier League, despite speculation over his future – that saw him linked heavily with Simba SC – could mark a new lease of life for the former Gor Mahia player.

In his last season in the FKFPL two years ago, Muguna was involved in 18 goals, scoring five times and setting up 13 other goals.

12 of the goal contributions came in the league, and six came in the FKF Cup where he was named the best player.

In 2016, Muguna had a stellar season with Western Stima, culminating with him being crowned the MVP, named the best midfielder, and was the runners-up in the New Player Of The Year category before crossing over to Gor Mahia the next season.

At Kenya Police, the depth of talent will be overwhelming; with the middle of the park specifically loaded with big talents including; former teammate Francis Kahata and Duke Abuya.

Showdown Looms As Raila Set To Lead Anti-Govt Saba Saba Rally

A showdown looms on Friday between police and supporters of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya party as they are set to hold a rally at the Kamukunji Grounds to commemorate Saba Saba Day.

The rally is expected to culminate in nationwide protests to pressure President William Ruto’s government to repeal some sections of the Finance Act 2023.

Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio opposition coalition, has promised to lead a large rally at the Kamukunji Grounds to commemorate the country’s “Third Liberation” on Saba Saba Day.

Odinga pledged at Kamukunji grounds to launch a campaign of “defiance and civil disobedience” against the current government of President William Ruto, which he accuses of being punitive on the people.

The Azimio coalition announced last week that it will start collecting signatures today to “signal the withdrawal of their sovereignty from officials of this illegitimate regime, including Mr William Ruto and all elected leaders who supported the Finance Bill 2023.”

The Azimio leaders and their supporters plan to march from Kamukunji grounds to the Nairobi CBD, which police have warned against.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei stated on Thursday that no gatherings would be permitted outside the Kamukunji grounds.

“We have only legalised the Kamukunji meeting and we will not allow any other meeting anywhere else,” Bungei was quoted by the Nation.

The former premier has urged citizens to back his move to stand against what he terms as ‘dictatorship’ and reject newly introduced taxes which he said have made the lives of Kenyans unbearable.

“It has become clear that we are dealing with a dictator who also has no respect for wananchi. Ruto has become a heartless tyrant,” he stated last week.

“As a people, we are not given to suffer in silence; we do not kneel before dictators and beg for their mercy. Even the few who do still suffer humiliation and even death, so we fight! Let us proceed with a bold determination that we are going to stick together and work together.”

Meanwhile, most parts of the city remained calm on Friday morning, including the Kamukunji grounds, where the Saba Saba rally is scheduled to take place.

Despite the fact that most businesses in the city are still closed, security deployment has been increased in areas considered opposition strongholds.
