Cameraman hurt by wild throw at Yankees game

A cameraman was injured after being hit in the head by a baseball at Wednesday night’s match in New York between the Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.

Pete Stendel of the YES Network was struck during the bottom of the fifth inning when a ball thrown to first base missed the player and hit him.

Play was delayed for 15 minutes as team medical staff tended to Mr Stendel.

As he was being taken off the field, he raised his hand to wave to the audience of over 36,000.

Mr Stendel was hit by a ball thrown by Orioles rookie shortstop Gunnar Henderson that sailed over first base and struck him on the sidelines.

The Twitter account for the Baltimore Orioles said the team wished him “a speedy recovery”.

The Yankees tweeted footage of Mr Stendel with his hand up giving a peace sign as a golf cart drives him off the field.

Audience members could be heard chanting “MVP” – short for most valuable player – as he was taken away.

Horse Banned For 40 Days After Controversial Ride

A horse has been banned from running for 40 days and his jockey referred to the British Horseracing Authority after finishing third at Worcester.

Hillsin’s run, under Dylan Kitts, caught the attention of stewards, who held an inquiry into his performance.

They noted the horse, trained by Chris Honour, “travelled strongly” in the home straight “without appearing to ever be asked for a finishing effort”.

Kitts said the horse made “respiratory noises” during Wednesday’s race.

He said Hillsin had hung to the right while running, which also restricted his ability to be more vigorous in the home straight.

Hillsin, who had been 2-1 favourite on Tuesday night and drifted in the betting to start at 11-1, finished one and a quarter lengths behind winner Bensini in the conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle.

Honour said the rider had generally followed his instructions to take his time, before mounting a late challenge although he did “express concerns over the manner in which Hillsin was ridden specifically from jumping the last hurdle”.

Millwall Owner Berylson Died In Cape Cod Car Crash

Millwall’s owner and chairman John Berylson died from injuries sustained after his car overturned and hit a tree in the United States.

Police in Falmouth, Massachusetts, say no other vehicle was involved in the crash on Tuesday.

Emergency services responded shortly before 08:00 local time and found Berylson, the sole occupant, trapped inside the car.

The 70-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash – described by Millwall as a “tragic accident” – remains under investigation.

American businessman Berylson became a significant shareholder of Millwall in 2007 after he led a consortium which invested in the south-east London club, then in League One, and became chairman in October that year.

The Championship side hailed him as “a person of such remarkable generosity, warmth, and kindness”, while former players and rival clubs have also paid tribute.

Falmouth Police Department said preliminary investigations into the crash showed that Berylson was driving his Range Rover south on Sippewissett Road in Falmouth, a coastal town on Cape Cod, when it lost control on a curve and left the road.

The car then rolled over into a ravine and came to rest against a tree.

Berylson was trapped inside the vehicle and was “extricated by mechanical means”. He subsequently “succumbed to injuries received in the crash”.

The crash is being investigated by the Falmouth Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police.

Berylson, who lived in Wellesley Hills in Greater Boston, is survived by wife Amy and children Jennifer, James, and Elizabeth.

Luis Enrique Named New PSG Coach As Mbappe Future Remains Up In The Air

Luis Enrique was appointed as the new coach of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday on a two-ydeal, but his unveiling was overshadowed by ongoing questions about the future of Kylian Mbappe.

The 53-year-old former Barcelona coach, who had been a free agent since being sacked by Spain last December, replaces Christophe Galtier after his departure was confirmed earlier in the day.

Luis Enrique was unveiled at a press conference alongside the Qatar-backed club’s president Nasser al-Khelaifi at their new training complex in Poissy, north-west of the French capital.

“I’m delighted to be joining Paris in order to enjoy a new experience,” Luis Enrique said in a club statement.

“It’s so exciting to meet new people, to live in this city, to learn a new language and, above all, to manage PSG.”

Yet when asked whether he had been given any guarantees that superstar forward Mbappe would remain at the club for the coming campaign, he was evasive.

The Spaniard later insisted he was “counting on all the players who are under contract”.

However, Khelaifi stated that Mbappe, 24, “must sign a new contract” if he wants to remain at PSG in the coming season.

“The position is very clear. If Kylian wants to stay, he must sign a new contract. We can’t let the best player in the world today leave for free. It’s impossible,” Khelaifi said.

“He said he would not leave for free. If somebody has changed his mind, that is not my fault.”

Mbappe declared last month that he would not extend his contract, which expires next year.

The club must therefore sell the player in the current transfer window, otherwise they will likely lose him for nothing when his deal ends.

Real Madrid hoped to sign Mbappe a year ago before he penned a new contract in Paris. The Spanish giants are favourites to secure the striker if he does eventually change clubs.

The new coach is the eighth man to lead the club since the transformative Qatari takeover of 2011 and, like those before him, will be charged with bringing them the success in the Champions League that has so far proved elusive.

PSG have never won Europe’s most prestigious club competition, coming closest when they lost in the 2020 final to Bayern Munich.

They have gone out in the last 16 in five of the last seven seasons, losing to Bayern at that stage in the most recent campaign. That defeat proved costly for Galtier.

GOOD NEWS FOR NEYMAR?

Luis Enrique arrives with pedigree in the Champions League, having won it as coach of Barcelona in 2015 with a brilliant team led by an attack of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.

He now joins a club beginning their latest rebuild following the departure of Messi after his two-year stay.

The identity of the new coach could be good news for Neymar, who has been linked with a move away from the Parc des Princes.

The Brazilian enjoyed three outstanding years under Luis Enrique at the Camp Nou, in which time Barca won LaLiga twice, the Copa del Rey three times, a Uefa Super Cup and a Club World Cup as well as the Champions League.

Several high-profile new signings are expected to be confirmed as PSG prepare to start pre-season training, with a tour to Japan scheduled for later this month.

Paris will begin their defence of the Ligue 1 title against Lorient on the weekend of August 12 and 13.

Luis Enrique left Barca in 2017 and became Spain coach in 2018. However, he quit in June 2019 and announced the death of his nine-year-old daughter from bone cancer two months later.

He returned to the Spain post in November of that year and took them to the Euro 2020 semifinals and the 2021 Uefa Nations League final before being fired after their elimination from last year’s World Cup in the last 16 in a penalty shoot-out against Morocco.

Galtier had only been in charge for one season and still had a year to run on his contract, but his departure had been expected.

He led PSG to the league title but that success was overshadowed by their exit from the Champions League.

The final weeks of Galtier’s reign were also marred by accusations that he made racist remarks about players during his previous job at Nice.

He has vehemently denied the accusations but will stand trial in the case in December.

Di Maria Joins Benfica As A Free Agent For Second Stint

Angel Di Maria’s career in Europe came full circle on Wednesday when the winger rejoined Portuguese side Benfica, the club he played for between 2007 and 2010 when he moved from Argentina.

“Welcome home, Di Maria!” the club said following a video announcing the signing of the 35-year-old who, according to reports, has agreed a one-year contract.

Di Maria’s first stint with the Portuguese champions was the prelude to his big move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, with whom he won a league title, two domestic cups and the Champions League.

The Argentine spent last season with Serie A side Juventus after seven successful years with Paris St Germain.

Di Maria will join close friend and compatriot Nicolas Otamendi, his teammate for Argentina in last year’s World Cup-winning campaign.

Toilet Break Feud With Murray ‘Forgotten’, Says Wimbledon Rival Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas insisted Wednesday that his US Open toilet break feud with Andy Murray has been “forgotten” ahead of their second round Wimbledon clash.

Tsitsipas defeated Murray in a five-set first round epic which stretched to almost five hours in New York in 2021.

Murray was furious that the Greek took a medical timeout after dropping the third set and then an eight-minute toilet break at the end of the fourth.

Former world No 1 Murray sarcastically tweeted: “Fact of the day. It takes Stefanos Tsitsipas twice as long to go the bathroom as it takes Jeff Bezos to fly into space. Interesting.”

However, ahead of their clash on Centre Court on Thursday for a spot in the last 32, Greek world No 5 Tsitsipas claimed the two men have buried the hatchet.

“I think it has been settled already a long time ago. We had to play Laver Cup together in the same team. I’ve forgotten about it. He has forgotten about it,” said Tsitsipas after seeing off Dominic Thiem in five sets at the All England Club on Wednesday.

“He’s someone that I respect. He has done great things in tennis. I’m looking forward to this match.”

Tsitsipas has never played on Centre Court where Murray captured the 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon titles.

While he had to play his opening match with Thiem over two days due to the torrential rain which wiped out most of the programme on Tuesday, Murray had the advantage of seeing off Ryan Peniston under the Centre Court roof.

That gave the 36-year-old an extra day of rest on Wednesday.

“I won’t know till I have to face him,” said Tsitsipas when asked if his almost four-hour clash with Thiem will affect him physically.

“He (Murray) is a strong opponent, he has played on this court so many times. Grass suits his game very good.”

Fresh Murray Leads Charge Of British Men, Faces Tsitsipas Test

A fresh and fit Andy Murray will lead the British men’s charge in Wimbledon’s second round on Thursday, where the 36-year-old will have to overcome Stefanos Tsitsipas to keep alive his hopes of a deep run at the grasscourt Grand Slam.

Murray has played four sets or more in four of his five matches across the last two editions of Wimbledon, but the Scot wrapped up Tuesday’s opener against Ryan Peniston with uncharacteristic speed, dropping just four games en route to a straight sets win.

Murray will also have had a full day’s rest between matches, as opposed to Tsitsipas, who has a tight turnaround from his rain-affected victory over Dominic Thiem, which lasted almost four hours and took place over the course of two days.

“What has happened at a lot of the majors that I played in the last few years, I’ve had lots of pretty long matches early on in the tournament,” two-time Wimbledon champion Murray told reporters.

“Any time you get the chance to finish a match quickly and can conserve some energy, it’s a really positive thing. It’s not necessarily confidence that I gain from it, it just means that the deeper I go in the tournament the fresher I will be.”

Both players will have reason to believe in their ability to win, with fifth seed Tsitsipas the favourite on paper, while Murray’s familiarity with Centre Court, support from a likely partisan crowd and expertise on grass will level the playing field a little.

“I’m not expecting anyone supporting (me). It’s not my first rodeo,” Tsitsipas said.

“He’s someone who’s done so much for the sport and I’ll go into it with a lot of respect for him. He’s such a tough competitor. That (Centre Court) is almost like his living room.”

DO OR DIE FOR LOCAL HOPES

After three British women’s players were eliminated on Wednesday, the men’s contingent could also be whittled down considerably on Thursday.

In addition to Murray, wildcard Jan Choinski will take on Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz for a place in the third round, while Liam Broady faces a stern test against Norwegian fourth seed Casper Ruud.

Top-10 seeds Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev are also in action, while 2020 US Open finalist Alexander Zverev opens his campaign against Gijs Brouwer.

In the women’s draw, defending champion Elena Rybakina takes on France’s Alize Cornet, with fourth-seeded American Jessica Pegula up against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa.
