Kenya Airways Grounds Planes For Maintenance Until July 6

Passengers intending to use the Kenya Airways planes to travel will have to wait until Thursday, July 6, after KQ grounded all its planes for maintenance.

The announcement was made on Monday via a statement.

“We would like to advise our guests on expected flight schedule changes due to bad weather resulting in turn-backs/ diversion and three of our aircraft undergoing unscheduled technical maintenance,” the statement read.

As a result, by the evening of Monday, July 3, all aircraft had been returned to service.

Kenya Airways, on the other hand, assured customers that they are working around the clock to restore normalcy to the flight schedule and apologised for any inconvenience.

“We will send communication and updates to all affected guests directly by message or email,” they said.

Matatus To Increase Fare By 30pc After Hike In Fuel Prices

Following the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s (EPRA) increase in fuel prices last week, Public Service Vehicles (PSV) will raise their daily fares by 30% beginning tomorrow.

The adjustment of fares, according to Matatu Owners Association chairman Albert Karakacha, will cushion the organization’s investors in the transport sector.

“There has been a sharp increase in fuel prices and other expenses… We consulted before arriving at a 30 percent hike,” he said.

Petrol is now retailing at Sh195, up from Sh179 when EPRA announced the new fuel prices.

Karagacha stated that they are working with government agencies and fuel suppliers to find ways to cushion public service operators and commuters.

Children As Young As 12 Detained For Attacking Police Amid Paris Protests

Children as young as 12 or 13 have been detained for attacking law enforcement and setting fires during six nights of violence after the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk in suburban Paris.

The average age of the 3,354 people arrested over the past week was 17, the interior minister Gerald Darmanin said.

In all, 99 town halls have been attacked during the unrest, including an attempt to ram a burning vehicle into the home of l’Hay-les-Les Roses mayor Vincent Jeanbrun. His wife and one of his young children were injured during the attack, which began at the weekend while they slept.

“We saw the real face of the rioters, that of assassins,” Mr Jeanbrun said in an emotional speech. France and “democracy itself” were being attacked in the days of rioting, he said.

Meanwhile, an “insulting” fundraiser set up for the family of the police officer who shot Nahel has amassed more than €1 million (£840,000).

Organised by Jean Messiha, a former adviser to the French far-right politician Marine Le Pen, the appeal has raised far more than the donation page set up for the family of the teenage victim.

Dennis Itumbi Changes Twitter Bio After Court Nullified Appointment of CASs

Digital strategist Dennis Itumbi has changed his Twitter bio after the High Court quashed the appointment of 50 Chief Administrative Secretaries (CASs).

Itumbi was among the CASs appointed by President William Ruto in March.

The former State House operative on Monday removed the Chief Administrative Secretary for ICT from his social media handles.

His bio now reads: ‘Come Here, Go There… The Home of Dreams… Home of Ideas… Connecting Dreams to Opportunity’.

A three-judge bench ruled that although there was public participation prior to the appointments, it was only restricted to 23 CASs, not the 50 that President Ruto had picked.

“There was no public participation in the appointment of the extra 27 CASs. The establishment of the extra 27 CAS positions is unconstitutional,” Justice Hedwig Ong’udi ruled.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the entire complement of 50 CASs is therefore unconstitutional.”

In their verdict, the judges further questioned the wisdom behind the appointment of 50 assistants to Cabinet Secretaries when the Kenyan Constitution only allows for a maximum of 22 CSs.

“We do not think it was the intention of framers of our Constitution to have 50 CASs deputizing 22 CASs,” they said.

Uproar As Jalang’o Issues New Directive Affecting All Events Held In Lang’ata

Lang’ata Member of Parliament (MP) Phelix Odiwuor, also known as Jalang’o, announced a new directive that will apply to all events held in his constituency.

The newly elected MP announced that his constituency must provide 50% of the labour for all activities held in Lang’ata.

Jalas claims that any event planner who disobeys this new instruction must find a venue outside Lang’ata.

The MP’s announcement will impact Carnivore Grounds, Uhuru Gardens, and Nyayo Stadium, among other locations.

“New Directive: Events hosted at Langata venues that do not allow our young people an opportunity to work there will not take place! Any location in Langata, including Carnivore, Uhuru Gardens, Nyayo Stadium, and others! Youths from Langata must hold 50% of the jobs,” Jalas proclaimed.

The new rules, however, have drawn varied reactions from Netizens, with some claiming that he overstepped his bounds as an MP.

Others questioned the new directive’s purpose and if it had been discussed with the appropriate authorities before being made public.

Another segment pointed out that because most events call for qualified staff, requiring more than 50% of the jobs necessary for them may be challenging.

Embu: Shock As Missing Woman Found Murdered, Body Dumped In A Church Well

On Monday, the body of a young woman was discovered inside a well in Embu.

The 24-year-old woman, identified as Josephine Karimi, worked as a secretary at the Catholic Women Association (CWA), where the body was found.

The woman’s father, Simon Kivuti Gatumu, described how his daughter, whom they thought was lost, was discovered in the well.

“My daughter went to work on Wednesday, June 28, but she did not return home. The search for her started on Thursday after I was told she did not report to work yet her phone was off,” he said.

Gatumu stated that police were called on Saturday and that his daughter’s body was later discovered in a well in the church compound.

The bereaved father requested that the church’s father-in-charge ensure security in the area.

“I would request the father in charge to take the mandate and ensure the safety of the people working here,” he added.

Zulu King Denies Being Poisoned, Says He’s ‘Fit And Sound’

The Zulu king, head of South Africa’s most influential traditional monarchy, said on Monday he was “fit and sound,” and denied rumours he had been poisoned.

“I’m very well, I’m very fit and sound,” Misuzulu Zulu told AFP in a phone interview from the neighbouring country of Eswatini, where he is undergoing a medical check-up.

The 48-year-old king ascended the throne last year after the death of his father, Goodwill Zwelithini, after a bitter feud over the royal succession.

Over the weekend, the influential Zulu prime minister, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, said that the monarch had been hospitalised in Eswatini after falling ill.

Buthelezi said there were “suspicions that he was poisoned,” after the unexpected death of one of his close advisers, believed to have ingested a toxic substance.

But asked by AFP if he was ever in a hospital the king said “never”.

“It was a procedural routine check-up that I do every three months, sometimes every six months,” he said in a terse interview.

The royal spokesman, Prince Africa Zulu, told AFP on Monday that the Zulu king had spent the day working, including meeting a Chinese delegation, but gave no further details.

The spokesman later shared a video in which the king said he had suffered “no poisoning whatsoever.”

He also said it was not confirmed that his aide had been poisoned.

The king said he needed to be away from home to process the loss of his “right-hand man” and he chose Eswatini, where his uncle King Mswati III reigns. The timing of the trip also coincided with his regular health checkups.

“It’s not because I’m poisoned, I’m well, I feel 100 percent (well)… everything is well functioning, there’s nothing wrong with me,” he said in the video clip.

He also said he would launch an investigation into the weekend reports about his health.

Buthelezi had claimed that the current king preferred treatment in Eswatini because “his parents had both received treatment in South Africa and subsequently died”.

Last September, another counsellor of the Zulu king was shot dead in mysterious circumstances on the sidelines of a traditional ceremony.

Although the title of king of the Zulu nation does not bestow executive power, the monarch wields great moral influence over more than 11 million Zulus, who make up nearly a fifth of South Africa’s population of 60 million people.

King Zwelithini, who died after more than 50 years in charge, left six wives and at least 28 children.

Misuzulu is the first son of Zwelithini’s third wife, who he designated as regent in his will.

The queen however died suddenly a month after Zwelithini, leaving a will naming Misuzulu as the next king — a development that did not go down well with other family members.

Jay Z’s Mother Marries Her Female Partner In Star-Studded Wedding

Gloria Carter, mother of Jay-Z, tied the knot with longtime partner Roxanne Wilshire in New York City on Sunday night.

TMZ reports that Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Tyler Perry, and Robin Roberts were among those who attended the star-studded wedding in Tribeca and subsequent reception that sources said didn’t conclude until around 1 a.m.

Jay-Z opened up about his mother coming out to him on “Smile,” a track off his 2017 album 4:44.

“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian/Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate/Society shame and the pain was too much to take,” he rapped. “Cried tears of joy when you fell in love/Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her/I just wanna see you smile through all the hate/Marie Antoinette, baby, let ’em eat cake.”

Jay-Z confirmed in an interview with David Letterman on the Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction that he did shed tears of joy upon discovering his mother fell in love.

“Imagine having to live your life as someone else and you think you’re protecting your kids,” he explained. “For her to sit in front of me and tell me ‘I think I love someone,’ I really cried…I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free.”

Jay said his mother came out while he was still putting together 4:44 and their conversation led to the creation of “Smile” the very next day. The track features a poem, written by Gloria, which she wrote on a plane headed to Los Angeles to see her son.

Gloria figured she needed to assist him in completing the song. After presenting him with the poem, Jay recorded her as she recited it over the phone.

“I was sitting there and I was telling him one day. I just finally started telling him who I was. Besides your mother, this is the person that I am, you know? This is the life that I lived,” Gloria said in a 2017 appearance on the D’Usse Friday podcast. “So my son started actually, like, tearing because he was like, ‘That had to be a horrible life, ma.’ I was like, ‘My life was never horrible. It was just different.’ So that made him want to do a song about it.”

In 2019, Hov thanked his mother for allowing him to share her story after he and Beyoncé received the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Media Awards.

Bey dedicated the award to her late Uncle Johnny, who not only made the prom dress referenced on “Heated,” but also introduced her to house music, which became the primary inspiration behind her Grammy-winning album Renaissance.

Kyiv Adds Unilever To ‘War Sponsor’ List

Kyiv has placed British consumer goods giant Unilever on Ukraine’s “International Sponsors of War” list, claiming Monday it continues to profit from operations in Russia, triggering demonstrations in London.

“The National Agency on Corruption Prevention has added British company Unilever onto its list of ‘International Sponsors of War’,” a statement said.

This was owing to its “presence in the Russian Federation and its significant taxes to the Russian state budget, thereby supporting the aggressor’s economy and contributing to the continuation of Russia’s war against Ukraine”, it added.

Unilever, whose major brands include Dove soap, Magnum ice cream and Cif surface cleaner, said it stuck to a statement it made in February, in which the company said it continued “to condemn the war in Ukraine as a brutal and senseless act by the Russian state”.

It also maintained it had ceased imports and exports of its goods into and out of Russia.

At the same time, the statement said Unilever was supplying “everyday food and hygiene products made in Russia to people in the country”, adding that “exiting is not straightforward”.

Ukrainian and British activists on Monday demonstrated outside the company’s London headquarters where a billboard, resembling an advert for Dove but which showed wounded Ukrainian soldiers, was displayed.

Unilever’s results for 2022 showed that two percent of net profit was earned thanks to its operations in Russia.

The Kyiv School of Economics estimates that Unilever last year paid at least $331 million in Russian taxes.

Campaign group Global Witness has meanwhile accused French energy giant TotalEnergies and British counterpart Shell of still profiting from Russian gas.

Questioned by AFP over the weekend claims, the two companies said they were bound by contracts, adding however they had exited Russian partnerships following Moscow’s invasion last year.

‘Slippery’ Actor Kevin Spacey Tried To Groom Me, Man Tells UK Court

An alleged sex assault victim of Kevin Spacey said the “slippery” Hollywood actor had tried to “groom” him, and the repeated groping assaults had left him feeling physically sick, a London court heard on Monday.

Spacey, 63, is on trial at Southwark Crown Court accused of a dozen allegations of historic sex offences committed against four men, then aged in their 20s and 30s, which are said to have taken place between 2001 and 2013.

He has denied all the charges and his lawyer Patrick Gibbs said last week at the start of the trial the jury were going to hear some “damned lies”.

On Monday, the court was shown a recorded police interview with the first of the alleged victims. The man said the actor had assaulted him on up to 12 occasions over a period of about four years in the early 2000s, grabbing his “private areas” when they were alone, such as in a car or an elevator.

After two to three weeks of being with Spacey, the actor made him feel uncomfortable, rubbing the man’s legs and neck while he was driving, before later starting to grope him or force the man’s hand onto his genitalia, he said.

“He was almost, from the get go, grooming me,” the man said in the interview.

The alleged victim, who cannot be identified, said the “touchy feely” actor had on one occasion aggressively grabbed his crotch so hard when he was driving him to a party hosted by singer Elton John in about 2004 that he almost crashed the car.

Describing himself a “man’s man”, the accuser recounted that he had threatened to knock the actor out if he did it again, to which Spacey had replied “that’s such a turn on to me”.

He described the Oscar-winner as a “slippery snaky, difficult person”, a “mixed-up individual” who was very confused about his sexuality. The man said Spacey’s behaviour was an open secret at the London Old Vic theatre where he worked for more than a decade.

“It was well-known that he was obviously up to no good so to speak,” the man said.

‘SICK’

Giving evidence in person in court from the behind a screen, the man said he felt shocked, embarrassment and ashamed about what had happened to him, saying the alleged assaults made him feel physically sick.

He rejected suggestions from Spacey’s lawyer Gibbs that he had been flirtatious himself with the actor, had appeared to enjoy the interaction and that he had questioned his own sexuality.

Gibbs quizzed him about why he had kept a “warm and jolly” letter Spacey had sent him ahead of a charity event the man was involved in, and a “cosy” photo he posted on social media showing him with the actor.

“It’s just a normal photo, two men standing next to each other,” the witness replied.

Gibbs also put it to him the allegation regarding the incident prior to the Elton John party was completely untrue, pointing out that Spacey had only attended one such gathering which was in 2001. The man replied he might have got the dates wrong as it had been so long ago.

Asked why he had only come forward to the police last year, he said it was the “right time”, and then when questioned whether it had occurred to him he might be able to sue Spacey, he agreed it had.

Asked how much he thought he might receive, he replied: “Whatever it would be, it wouldn’t be enough for somebody who had been assaulted and abused.”

The trial is due to last about four weeks.
