Gerrard Joins Saudi Influx To Take Charge Of Al-Ettifaq

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is the latest star name to make the move to Saudi Arabia after signing a deal to become head coach of Al-Ettifaq.

The 43-year-old has been out of the game since being sacked by Aston Villa in October.

Gerrard had previously said he had turned down an offer to head to the Gulf state, but has now been lured by the riches on offer.

“Where legends are found. We’re thrilled to announce Steven Gerrard is our new head coach,” the club said in a post on Twitter.

Al-Ettifaq finished seventh out of 16 clubs in the Saudi Pro League last season.

Backed by the nation’s sovereign wealth fund, the Saudi Pro League is luring big names from the major European leagues with the promise of huge salaries.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr in January started the trend.

His former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema and French World Cup winner N’Golo Kante of Chelsea have recently joined Al-Ittihad.

Former Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo and ex-Benfica Jorge Jesus are among the coaches to head to Saudi.

Since retiring from a glittering playing career, Gerrard did have success during his spell in charge of Scottish giants Rangers, where he won the club’s only league title in the past 12 years in 2020/21.

Saudi champions Al-Ittihad sign Jota from Celtic

Celtic winger Jota has joined Al-Ittihad on a three-year contract, the Saudi Pro League champions announced on Monday.

Financial details were not disclosed but Scottish media reported the transfer fee was £25 million.

Al-Ittihad announced the deal by publishing an animated video of coach Nuno Espirito Santo watching Jota’s goals.

“We want to conquer the world,” the former Wolverhampton Wanderers coach said in the video with the FIFA Club World Cup in the background.

Al-Ittihad will participate in the Club World Cup which will be held in Jeddah in December as champions of the host country’s league.

Jota, 24, becomes Al-Ittihad’s third signing after Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema and former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante.

The former Benfica forward scored 28 goals and made 26 assists in 83 games after moving to the Scottish champions in 2021.

The Saudi Pro league has become an attractive destination for Europe-based players since Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Al-Nassr last January.

Last month, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced a Sports Clubs Investment and Privatization Project involving Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal.

PIF owns 75% of each of the four clubs, while their respective non-profit foundations own 25% of each.

Neymar Fined $3.3 Million For Building Lake At Mansion

A prosecutor in Brazil fined soccer star Neymar 16 million reais ($3.3 million) for building a lake at his mansion on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro without an environmental licence, authorities said on Monday.

The town council in Mangaratiba issued four fines for “environmental violations in the construction of an artificial lake at the player’s mansion,” the council secretariat said in a statement.

“The sanctions add up to more than 16 million reais,” the statement said, a sum set out by the prosecutor’s office in Mangaratiba, a tourist area around 130 kilometres (80 miles) from Rio where the Paris Saint-Germain star has his mansion.

Among “dozens of infractions” detected, the authorities listed “carrying out work subject to environmental control without authorisation,” capture and diversion of river water without authorisation, and “removal of land and suppression of vegetation without authorisation.”

Neymar has 20 days to appeal the penalty, the amount of which had initially been set at five million reais, close to one million dollars.

On June 22, after complaints based on social media posts, authorities found several environmental violations at the luxury property, where workers were building an artificial lake and beach.

Authorities cordoned off the site and ordered all activity to cease, but Brazilian media reported that Neymar threw a party there and bathed in the lake.

Neymar’s press office in Brazil did not respond to an AFP request for comment.

Neymar, 31, is currently recovering from surgery on his right ankle, which he underwent in Doha in March.

The striker has not played since February and doubts have arisen about his staying at PSG.

Neymar bought the Mangaratiba mansion in 2016. According to Brazilian media, it sits on 10 000 square metres (107 000 square feet) of land and features a heliport, spa and gym.

Dortmund Sign Nmecha From Wolfsburg

Borussia Dortmund have signed Germany midfielder Felix Nmecha from VfL Wolfsburg on a five-year-deal, the Bundesliga runners-up said on Monday.

The clubs have not disclosed the financial details of the transfer but German media reported that Dortmund would pay €30 million for the 22-year-old.

Nmecha joined Wolfsburg in 2021 from Manchester City, where he was mainly part of the youth teams.

“Felix Nmecha is a fast, technically skilled and physically strong player who will enrich our midfield both offensively and defensively with his profile,” Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl told the club website.

“He enjoyed a first-class education at Manchester City and made a name for himself in Wolfsburg last season.

“We’re happy to have gotten another German national player to join us and we’re convinced of it that Felix’s development is far from over.”

Nmecha made his first and only Germany appearance so far in March in a friendly loss to Belgium.

Azimio Praises Court For CAS Ruling

Azimio leaders have applauded the High Court decision declaring the position of Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) unconstitutional.

At a rally in Siaya on Monday, opposition leaders said the decision was timely because it reduces the wage bill and saves Kenyans money.

Opiyo Wandayi, Minority Leader and MP for Ugunja Constituency said President Ruto was inconsiderate in appointing 50 CAS at a time when the country was facing economic difficulties.

The leaders vowed to hold the government accountable in order to protect Kenyans from irrational political decisions.

“Ruto, you have taken your people all those who were deafened in elections, those who were left behind during elections and you have made them assistant ministers,” Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga said. “Ruto, what’s the matter with you?”

MPs who support Azimio have vowed to oppose the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s proposal to raise civil servants’ pay.

Raila Odinga, the Azimio chief, rallied Kenyans to attend the saba saba protests on Friday, urging Kenyans to exercise their mandate in accordance with Chapter One of the Constitution.

“Kenya mzima watajitokeza na kusema kwamba enough is enough punda amechoka, punda amechoka sasa watu wote watajitokeza,” said Odinga.

Petitioner Wants Malala, Ndii Blocked From Cabinet Meetings

A renowned City Lawyer and Human Rights Defender Charles Mugane has filed a petition seeking to block four Secretaries to the Cabinet from sitting in the cabinet meetings.

The four include Cleophas Malala, David Ndii, Amb Monica Juma & Harriette Chiggai.

Lawyer Mugane says that the said officials are not members of the Cabinet by the meaning of Article 152 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.

The Petitioner contends that the purported inclusion of the four to the cabinet contravenes the mandatory constitutional provisions and procedural constitutional requirements.

Mugane argues that the inclusion into the cabinet of the four was done without the involvement of parliament; the same insulates the “strangers” from oversight as provided in Article 95 (5) of the constitution, the same being null and void.

“The government action herein seeks to establish a government other than is provided under the constitution, which action is null and void,”added Mugane.

The human rights activist wants the court to prohibit the four from attending the cabinet meetings pending the hearing and determination of this petition.

He also wants the court to certify this matter urgently and are not members of the Cabinet and in-fact hold other portfolios being the Secretary General of the UDA Party (the ruling party), The President’s Chief Economic Advisor, the President’s National Security advisor and the President’s advisor on women’s rights.

The petitioner adds that the continued attendance of cabinet meetings by the four raises serious Constitutional questions that this honorable court ought to attend to at its earliest convenience.

He says that on 27th June 2023 the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya approved a decision to allow them to attend cabinet meetings which act is unconstitutional by the meaning of Article 152 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

Further they took an oath of secrecy administered at the State House Nairobi before proceeding to attend their first meeting.

Malkia Strikers Set To Jet Out To Morocco On Thursday After Securing Visas

Malkia Strikers are set to belatedly jet out this week to Morocco for a FIVB High Performance Training ahead of the Nations Challenger Cup set for France between July 27-30.

The team was supposed to have jetted out mid last month but could nit hit the runaway due to visa hitches.

International Volleyball Federation Board (FIVB) have already secured air tickets to Morocco, France and Cameroon where they are supposed to play in the Africa Nations Championships set to run between August 6-18.

It is after failing to secure the crucial traveling document that, the team kicked off nonresidential training at the Nyayo Stadium Indoor Arena. The final team is expected to be unveiled later in the day.

The team is expected to camp in Morocco for some weeks before leaving for France on July 25 for the championship where the Kenyan girls will be hoping to land a place in the 2024 Volleyball Nations League.

Malkia will battle it out with Colombia, France, Mexico, Sweden, Ukraine and Vietnam.

Meanwhile, leading gaming firm Mozzart Bet is expected to extend a helping financial hand to the team before departure to Morocco.

This will not be the first time the firm is coming to the rescue of the team as ten million shillings was advanced to the team last year ahead of their training camp in Brazil.

Multiple Marathon Winner Titus Ekiru Faces 10 Year Ban After Provisional Doping Suspension

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), the body that helps to combat doping in the sport of athletics, has handed a provisional suspension to Kenya’s Titus Ekiru for two doping offenses.

In a post made on their official social media platforms on Monday afternoon, AIU noted that the 31-year-old was suspended due to the presence of Prohibited Substances (Triamcinolone Acetonide and metabolite; Pethidine and metabolite) and for Tampering.

“An extensive investigation by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), with important assistance from Kenyan authorities, has led to four charges for Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) against Titus Ekiru – two separate charges relating to the detection of Prohibited Substances in his samples and two separate Tampering charges regarding the results-management process in each case,” the statement read.

The 31-year-old’s charges stem from AIU investigations into Ekiru’s positive in-competition doping tests after marathon victories in the Generali Milano Marathon on 16 May 2021 and the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon on 26 November 2021.

Ekiru tested positive for Triamcinolone Acetonide after winning in Milan but was not immediately charged after the initial investigation appeared to validate his explanation that the result was due to legitimate medical treatment.

The athlete tested positive for Pethidine after winning in Abu Dhabi, and again claimed the outcome resulted from legitimate medical treatment.

The AIU was notified of the positive test for Pethidine on 1 February 2022. Following initial investigations into that matter – and given the emergence of a pattern of Triamcinolone Acetonide use among Kenyan athletes – the AIU reopened the investigation into Ekiru’s first case.

The athlete was provisionally suspended in June 2022, pending the outcome of both wide-ranging investigations which included crucial collaboration with the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) and other Kenyan authorities.

This led to the AIU rejecting Ekiru’s explanations, charging him with the Pethidine ADRV in March 2023 and with the Triamcinolone Acetonide ADRV in April 2023.

“Additionally, the AIU now asserts Ekiru has cases to answer for tampering with the results-management processes by submitting falsified medical explanations and documentation to the AIU for both positive tests,” the statement added.

This means the elite marathoner – who has the right to defend himself before the Disciplinary Tribunal – is facing a potential ten-year ban.

Ekiru rose to fame in 2017 where he won the Seville Marathon in Spain with a time of 2:07:42.

In 2018, he won the Honolulu Marathon with a time of 2:09:01 and the half marathon event of the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon with a time of 1:01:02. He also won the Mexico City Marathon event with a new course record of 2:10:38.

In 2019, he won the Milano City Marathon and he set a new course record of 2:04:46. In that year, he also won the Portugal Half Marathon and he set a new course record of 1:00:12. In December 2019, he won the Honolulu Marathon for the second time with a new course record of 2:07:59.

In 2021, he won the Milano City Marathon again and he set a new course record of 2:02:57. He also won the Abu Dhabi Marathon held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

He represented Kenya at the 2019 African Games and he won the men’s half marathon with a time of 1:01:42 becoming the first Kenyan to win the event at the African Games in what was also a new African Games record.

Following the provisional suspension, Ekiru will await the final decision of the case at a hearing that will be conducted under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules or the Integrity Code of Conduct.

Zimbabwean Presidential Candidate Meets Kenyan Politicians Ahead Polls

Saviour Kasukuwere, Zimbabwe’s presidential candidate, is in Kenya for a series of meetings with political operatives ahead of the August 23 elections in the South African country.

Kasukuwere, who announced his presidential ambitions a week ago at a press conference, has promised to revitalise the country’s economy, which is currently under severe strain.

“Top of my agenda for the people, if I emerge the winner in the polls, is to give title deeds to Zimbabweans who have suffered for decades now,” he said during an interview with a media pool in Nairobi.

Kasukuwere will run as an independent against ZANU PF incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa and Change Coalition candidate Nelson Chamisa.

The 52-year-old former minister stated that his priority was to revitalise Zimbabwe’s economy and stabilise it in order to stop the country’s citizens from fleeing to neighbouring SADC countries.

“We are currently a shame to the SADC region. We are dragging them down because our people are all over the SADC states. I want to change that by reviving the economy and stopping the outflow so we develop our country,” he said.

Zimbabwe’s endemic corruption, which he claims has decimated the country’s credibility and image, is also on his Presidential agenda.

“It is a shame that we have become a convenient shop for known criminals and no accountability is visited on them,” he added.

He has already met with Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, who posted a photo of the two on Facebook.

On May 13th, the Zimbabwean took to Twitter to praise Kenya’s political maturity while sharing a photo of Raila Odinga meeting with President William Ruto.

“Kenya has an amazing level of political tolerance and maturity. You can differ but still remain one people and one nation,” he wrote.
