Former Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson taken to hospital before Man Utd v Liverpool match

By Bonface Mulyungi

Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital after falling unwell at Old Trafford shortly before Manchester United’s Premier League match with Liverpool on Sunday.

Sources stressed it was a precautionary move for the 84-year-old former Manchester United manager, and not an emergency situation.

Ferguson, who managed United for 27 years during a glittering reign, watches the club’s games from the directors’ box.

No further update has been provided on his condition after his admission to hospital.Ferguson had a brain haemorrhage in 2018, which left him seriously ill.

He spoke about his recovery in detail three years later. He was pictured with guests at the stadium on Sunday a couple of hours before kick-off.

Ferguson was subsequently taken in an ambulance from Old Trafford to the hospital.

Club officials are optimistic Ferguson will soon be fit enough to return home.

Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-2 to secure Champions League place next season

By Bonface Mulyungi

Manchester United secured Champions League football next season as Kobbie Mainoo’s strike earned a thrilling 3-2 victory over old rivals Liverpool on Sunday.United were 2-0 up inside 15 minutes through Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, but imploded after the break to allow Arne Slot’s men to level with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo before Mainoo secured the win.A return to Europe’s elite competition after a two-year absence and another big game win furthers Michael Carrick’s case to continue as United boss next season.

Mainoo has embodied the upturn in United’s fortunes since Carrick took charge in January.Overlooked by Ruben Amorim, the England midfielder earned a new five-year contract this week and celebrated in style with a cool finish from the edge of the box to edge a wild encounter.Third-placed United open up a six-point lead over Liverpool and are guaranteed to finish in the top five.Despite an 11th league defeat of the season, Liverpool likely needs only three points from their three remaining games to secure a place in the Champions League.Slot’s side arrived at Old Trafford depleted without the forward trio of Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak through injury.

United sensed blood and were well worthy of their early two-goal lead.Cunha was afforded two chances to find his range from the edge of the box to open the scoring. The Brazilian’s strike flicked off Alexis MacAllister to give Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman no chance. The waves of United attack kept coming, and Sesko appealed for a penalty after failing to beat Woodman from Bruno Fernandes’ precise pass.Seconds later, the Slovenian bundled the ball over the line from Fernandes’ header back across the goal.Fernandes was inches away from a third when he blasted Bryan Mbeumo’s cross wide. But the warning signs of what was to come in the second half for United were also there before the break.Gakpo curled wide on one of the many occasions Liverpool were able to pierce the heart of the Red Devils’ midfield.Sesko was replaced by Amad Diallo at half-time, and the Ivorian almost immediately gifted Liverpool a route back into the game.Szoboszlai pounced on Amad’s loose pass and ran from inside his own half unopposed before slotting into the bottom corner.United were architects of their own downfall again for the equaliser. This time, goalkeeper Senne Lammens’ pass was picked off by Mac Allister, who fed Szoboszlai, and the Hungarian coolly teed up Gakpo for a tap-in.The unusually low stakes for a game between these clubs showed as both threw caution to the wind in search of a winner. The home side got it when a poor clearance from MacAllister broke kindly for the charging Mainoo to steer into the bottom corner.United’s first league double over Liverpool since the 2015-16 season completes a remarkable turnaround in the two sides’ fortunes from a year ago.Liverpool finished 14 places and 42 points ahead of their rivals on their way to equalling United’s record of 20 English top-flight titles last season.Carrick has also beaten Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea in his short reign and now delivered his primary goal with the riches of the Champions League to make his case hard to ignore.

President Ruto dares his opponents to show their track-record, bragging his development agenda

By Bonface Mulyungi

President William Ruto has expressed optimism that his development scorecard will guarantee him a second term in the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking in Murang’a during a church service, challenged his opponents who seek to unseat him in the next polls, arguing that he bears a tangible track record that proves his competence to lead for another five years.

He started by listing some of the key projects his government was undertaking in the Mt.Kenya region, announcing plans to complete the much awaited Mau Mau roads by next year.

The president further enumerated the projects in he has effected in Muranga county, spanning from agriculture, transport, and housing that his government is working on, calling on the opposition to show their work.

“We have now allocated about Ksh.1B in the construction of MauMau roads. When we started that project, by 2022 it was 20% done and now it is at 60%. Our goal is to complete it by next year,” he said.I want to ask you the people of Murang’a, is there any other government that has built 20 markets? The Housing project has employed 640,000 youths and we have allocated Ksh.600 billion for that project. Even the bible says everyone will carry their own cross. Everyone will be judged by the work they have done not by how much insults you hurl or how tribal you are.”The Head of State therefore maintained that his opponents lack enough grit to oust him from office, saying that he holds a stellar track record that nobody can compete with.

“To our opponents, there is no need to insult each other or spread hate and tribalism. Present your scorecard and I will present mine and then let the people decide,” he said.President Ruto later visited Njiiri school in Murang’a county, where he disclosed that the government would increase the funding to the education sector to a tune of Ksh.765 billion from the current allocation of Ksh.702 billion to provide quality education to learners.

His visit to Murang’a county is the second in just a week, as he continues his charm offensive of the populous Mt. Kenya region ahead of next year’s general election.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata Ditches Ruto’s UDA Party Ahead of 2027 Poll: “Deep Reflections”

By Lilian Mutua

Murang’a – President William Ruto’s bid to consolidate Mt Kenya votes ahead of the 2027 General Election has received a major blow following the latest declaration by Governor Irungu Kang’ata.

In an unexpected turn of events, Governor Kang’ata ditched the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ahead of the upcoming poll. Will Irungu Kang’ata defend his seat on the UDA ticket? Addressing the press on Sunday, May 3, Kang’ata said after wide consultation with members of the public, he has opted not to defend his seat on a UDA ticket.

“His Excellency the President has always told us that the people are supreme, and thank you for that statement and therefore my responsibility is to adhere to what people have told me and in light of that and because I have tried my best to have these issues resolved internally I have had a candid discussion with His Excellency the President one-on-one where we shared these ideas but we did not reach what we call full convergence. I have no doubt to say that, after careful reflection, I wish to state that come 2027, I will not defend my seat on the current party ticket. I will later, at a certain stage, communicate the platform on which I will present myself to the electorate,” Kang’ata announced.

Kang’ata announced that he will remain a committed member of the UDA party, but will unveil the party he will use later. The governor narrated how Kenya Kwanza Alliance leaders have been pressuring him to endorse government programmes against his wish. “However, until then, I will remain a disciplined and committed member of the UDA party. I will continue to serve diligently in my capacity and to cooperate with the national government in delivering development to our people. I will remain loyal to the president and also to the party through the remainder of this term. But I felt this is important for me to say because I have seen for the last few days the president has been in Murang’a, and every time I go there, I am being pressured to endorse programs, to endorse him. Even though the pressure has come publicly, including my friend, they have even suggested that I’m not sick, which I felt was not fair because, truly, I have a problem. I felt that’s too much,” he added.

18 dead as landslides hit 3 counties amid heavy rains

By Bonface Mulyungi

At least 18 people have died following a series of landslides triggered by heavy rains in parts of the country, as authorities warn of escalating risks linked to the ongoing wet weather.

The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement issued on Sunday, May 3, 2026, said the fatalities were reported in Tharaka Nithi County, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, and Kiambu County, where mudslides have devastated communities, displaced families, and destroyed property.

Rising death toll and destructionPolice said the landslides have caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, leaving many residents homeless and in urgent need of assistance.

The death toll, which currently stands at 18, is expected to remain under review as search and rescue efforts continue in affected areas. This is a rise from the previous 10 that had been announced by the police earlier.

“As the country continues to experience sustained and heavy rainfall, the National Police Service continues to call for heightened caution amid increasing disaster risks in several regions.

Recent reports indicate that mudslides have occurred in Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Kiambu Counties, severely affecting multiple families, displacing households, and causing significant damage to property and infrastructure,” the NPS stated.“The National Police Service has confirmed the loss of 18 lives as a result of these incidents, underscoring the grave danger posed by the ongoing weather conditions.”Authorities described the situation as dire, warning that the persistent rainfall continues to increase the likelihood of further disasters, particularly in landslide-prone regions.

Multi-agency response underwayEmergency teams drawn from multiple government agencies have been deployed to the affected counties to respond to the crisis.

The teams are engaged in search and rescue operations, evacuating residents from high-risk zones, distributing emergency relief supplies, and assessing areas vulnerable to further landslides.

Officials say efforts are ongoing to locate missing persons and prevent additional casualties.

Public urged to exercise caution

The NPS has issued a nationwide advisory urging Kenyans to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures during the heavy rains.

Residents living in flood-prone and landslide-risk areas have been advised to relocate to safer ground and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions.

Authorities have also cautioned against attempting to cross flooded rivers or roads, noting that such actions have previously led to fatalities.“Multi-agency teams are actively engaged in search and rescue operations, the evacuation of at-risk residents, the provision of emergency relief supplies, and the assessment of high-risk zones to prevent further loss of life.

Even so, the public is strongly advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, particularly those living in landslide-prone or flood-affected areas,” the statement reads.

Members of the public have been encouraged to report emergencies through the police hotlines 999 and 112, which remain operational around the clock.

President William Ruto congratulates Kelvin Kiarie after winning gold for Kenya at the African Skating Championship in Cairo, Egypt

By Bonface Mulyungi

President William Ruto has congratulated Kenyan skater Kelvin Kiarie following his outstanding performance at the African Skating Championship held in Cairo, Egypt.

In a congratulatory message, the president praised Kiarie for his remarkable achievement, describing it as a proud moment for both the athlete and the nation.“Well done Kelvin Kiarie on winning gold at the African Skating Championship in Cairo, Egypt. This is a proud moment for you and for our nation,” Ruto stated.

Ruto Congratulates Kelvin Kiarie The President highlighted Kiari’s victory as a symbol of determination and excellence, noting that his success serves as inspiration to many young athletes across Kenya and the African continent.“You have conquered the continent and your journey is an inspiration to many aspiring sportsmen and women in Kenya and Africa,” he added.

Ruto further expressed confidence in Kiari’s future, emphasizing that his talent and competitive spirit position him for even greater success on the global stage.“I am confident that your talent, drive, and competitive spirit will carry you further onto the global stage. Congratulations, and keep flying our flag high,” the President concluded.

Before his celebrated victory in Cairo, Kelvin Kiarie had already delivered a strong performance earlier in April 2026 at the International Skating Challenge in Cotonou, Benin.

In Cotonou, Kiarie clinched two medals, including a gold, and finished first in his category. Yet the moment that should have marked a national celebration was instead defined by absence.

There were no ministry officials in attendance, no flag bearers to share in the moment, and no corporate sponsorship visibility around his victory. The Kenyan national anthem played in a nearly empty arena as Kiarie stood alone on the podium, holding the flag and celebrating his achievement by himself.

Dressed in a white and blue jersey paired with black and white pants, he skated around the venue, visibly emotional but proud of his performance.“Hello Kenyans! I just did it! It is gold for Kenya. I am in Benin, West Africa, and I am so proud to represent my country. Thank you!” he said after the win.

Thieves drink alter wine after stealing church electronics in Ndia, Kirinyaga County

By Bonface Mulyungi

Residents of Ndia Constituency in Kirinyaga County have raised concerns over a spate of break-ins targeting churches in the area after thieves raided at least three churches in Riakiania and stole musical and sound equipment.

Church officials said the break-ins happened overnight, with items stolen including microphones, mixers, keyboards and pianos.

Peter Munene of Fountain of Life Church International, Riakiania, said the attackers gained entry through a window before accessing a strong room.

“They took away microphones, mixers and other equipment worth over Ksh200,000. They even drank a bottle of communion wine before leaving,” Munene said.

At St Joseph Riakiania Catholic Church, vice chairman Harrison Mbirui said the thieves entered through the main gate before breaking into the church. He said they stole microphones, mixers, a piano, PMC kits and other property valued at more than Ksh500,000.

“They took advantage of the ongoing rains when everyone was asleep,” Mbirui said.

ACK Riakiania Church was also hit, with Flosy Wambui Murimi saying electronics worth more than Ksh250,000 were stolen.

“We are wondering where they are taking church equipment. We have reported the matter to Baricho Police Station and officers have visited the church,” Wambui said.

Church leaders said the gang appears to be targeting only church equipment, raising fears over how services would proceed.“We don’t know what we will use tomorrow, Sunday. Maybe we will just clap our hands,” one church leader said.Munene said similar cases have been reported in the constituency, including in Kariti Ward about two months ago, prompting residents to call for swift action by security agencies.

President Donald Trump says US not likely to accept new Iran peace proposal

US President Donald Trump speaks to the press outside the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, DC, on April 13, 2026. Trump refused to apologize Monday for criticizing Pope Leo XIV, after the pontiff called for an end to violence in the Iran war. "There's nothing to apologize for. He's wrong," Trump told reporters, a day after a social media post and comments slamming the US-born pope. (Photo by Brendan SMIALOWSKI / AFP)

US President Donald Trump said Saturday he will review a new Iranian peace proposal, but cast doubt over its prospects as he left open the possibility of future attacks on Iran.

Negotiations between the two countries have been deadlocked since a ceasefire came into effect on April 8, with one round of peace talks to end the more than two-month war having failed in Pakistan.

The dour outlook came after Iran’s Tasnim and Fars news agencies reported Tehran submitted a 14-point proposal to mediator Islamabad. Details included ending the conflict on all fronts and enacting a new framework for the crucial Strait of Hormuz, Tasnim said.

“I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

In a brief interview with reporters in West Palm Beach, Florida, he declined to specify what could trigger new military action against the Islamic republic.”If they misbehave, if they do something bad, but right now, we’ll see,” he said. “But it’s a possibility that could happen, certainly.”

On Saturday, Mohammad Jafar Asadi, a senior figure in the Iranian military’s central command, said “a renewed conflict between Iran and the United States is likely.””Evidence has shown that the United States is not committed to any promises or agreements,” he added, according to Fars news agency.

Deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi told diplomats in Tehran “the ball is in the United States’ court to choose the path of diplomacy or the continuation of a confrontational approach.”Iran, he said, was “prepared for both paths.”

US news site Axios reported earlier in the week that Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff had asked for Tehran’s nuclear program to be put back on the negotiating table.Iran’s mission to the UN pointed to the massive US nuclear arsenal, accusing Washington on Saturday of “hypocritical behavior” towards Iran’s own atomic ambitions. There was no legal “restriction on the level of uranium enrichment, so long as it is conducted under the IAEA’s supervision, as was the case with Iran,” it said, using the abbreviation for the UN nuclear watchdog.Iran has maintained a stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz since the war began, choking off major flows of oil, gas and fertilizer to the world economy, while the United States has imposed a counter-blockade on Iranian ports.

Oil prices are about 50 percent above pre-war levels. The vice speaker of Iran’s parliament, Ali Nikzad, said that under draft legislation being considered for managing the waterway, 30 percent of tolls collected would go towards military infrastructure, with the rest earmarked for “economic development.”Managing the Strait of Hormuz is more important than acquiring nuclear weapons,” he said.

Fighting meanwhile continued Saturday in Lebanon, where Israel has carried out deadly strikes despite a separate truce with the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.

The Israeli military said it had struck dozens of Hezbollah targets across southern Lebanon following evacuation warnings for nine villages.Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported three deaths in the attacks.

Hezbollah, for its part, claimed several attacks targeting Israeli troops. The Israeli strikes included one in the village of Yaroun on what its military called a “religious building,” which was damaged.

The French Catholic charity L’Oeuvre d’Orient said the troops had “destroyed” a convent belonging to the Salvatorian Sisters, a Greek-Catholic religious order with which the charity is affiliated.- Iran’s economic toll -In Washington, lawmakers were wrestling over whether Trump had breached a deadline to seek congressional approval for the war.

Administration officials argue the ceasefire paused a 60-day clock, after which congressional authorisation would be required — a claim disputed by opposition Democrats.

In Iran, the war’s economic toll is deepening, with oil exports crimped and inflation surging past 50 percent.”Everyone is trying to endure it, but… they are falling apart,” 40-year-old Amir, a Tehran resident, told an AFP reporter based outside the country.”We still have not seen much of the economic effects because everyone had a bit of savings. They had some gold and dollars for a rainy day. When they run out, things will change.”

‘Tiny’ Roman penis charm found at cricket club

By Bonface Mulyungi

BBC -A “tiny” penis-shaped Roman artefact thought to have been intended to bring good fortune has been discovered by archeologists excavating land around a cricket club.

The bronze 1,800-year-old phallus was unearthed at Carlisle Cricket Club in Cumbria during a dig which started in 2017.

Historians believe the site to be home to an ancient bathhouse and have already found pottery shards, pillar fragments and various large stone heads.

Site director Frank Giecco said the Romans were “extremely superstitious” and the phallus was intended to be “a good luck charm”.”It’s our first little phallus, it’s tiny, it’s bout 3cm (1.2in), but beautifully made in bronze,” Giecco said.

He said such mementos would often have been attached to belts, carved into walls or worn as jewellery “to protect you”.During their yearly digs, volunteers for the team have found thousands of significant items including from the Bronze Age, the English Civil War and the Edwardian period, Giecco said.

He said: “It’s unusual we haven’t found a phallus shaped object on the site before, it’s so rich in other types of objects.”It’s a beautiful little object”

Giecco said the discovery “gives a fantastic insight into the minds of people who lived in Carlisle 1,800 years ago”.He added “All of us give up huge amounts of time for this project to make it work.”The joy of pulling a bit of pot out of the ground that hasn’t been touched for years is incredible.”New items from the dig have been displayed at the Tullie Museum and Gallery.
