Lang’ata MP Jalang’o Declares Bid to Challenge Edwin Sifuna for Nairobi Senate Seat

Lang’ata Constituency MP, Mr. Phelix Odiwuor commonly referred to as Jalang’o, has announced that he will contest for the senatorial seat in Nairobi County in the 2027 General Election.

He noted that he was ready for the contest and was prepared to compete against current Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna if the time came.

Speaking in an interview on Radio 47’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday, Jalang’o stated that his decision was informed by his move around town, engaging with people and listening to their concerns.

He said that his work among people in various parts of Nairobi has been his confidence builder that he can give service to the people at a higher capacity.

“Mimi huamua na naendea. Mimi nakuambia naezakuwa gavana huko Nairobi na naeza kuwa seneta huko Nairobi na naeza kuwa mbunge wa Lang’ata na naweza kuwa mbunge wa pahali popote huko Nairobi. Maanake nimetembea, nimeskia

His claim implies that he thinks he can be capable of serving as Nairobi governor, senator, or even an MP in any constituency of his choice within Nairobi because he has strolled around and listened to those involved.

The Nairobi Senate seat is expected to attract strong competition as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

KeNHA Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to Billboard and Wayleave Operators

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has directed billboard owners, directional sign operators, and utility wayleave owners to renew their annual permits and clear any outstanding arrears.

In a notice on Tuesday, February 10, acting KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said all the payments must be completed within 14 days.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hereby notifies all advertisers of Bill Boards, Directional Signs, and Utility Wayleave owners, who have legal approvals, to pay for their annual renewal fees and settle any outstanding arrears as per the permit requirements.

“This payment should be made within fourteen days from the date of this notice,” read the notice.

Kimeli emphasized that all the renewals must be processed exclusively through KeNHA’s online permit portal: https://permits.kenha.co.ke:7080.

The KeNHA boss warned that the authority will move to demolish all structures whose licences are not renewed by February 24, 2026.

“At the expiry of this period, on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, enforcement action will follow, including the demolition of the structures and the recovery of all related costs, without further reference to the owners or agents,” Kimeli said.

Further, he cautioned businesses and individuals intending to advertise using existing billboards or utility wayleaves to conduct due diligence on the compliance status of service providers.

“Any firm or individual who wish to utilize the services of the erected Bill Boards or Utility Wayleave should undertake due diligence on the compliance status of the service provider by forwarding copies of their (service providers) valid permits to the rsd@kenha.co.ke for verification,” Kimeli added.

Communications Authority Flags Mobile Phone Brands Kenyans Should Avoid Over Safety, Health Concerns

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has flagged 21 non-type approved mobile phone brands as unsafe for use by the public.

In a notice on Tuesday, February 10, CA Director General David Mugonyi said the authority has noted an influx of non-type-approved mobile phones in the market.

Mugonyi warned members of the public that the non-type approved mobile devices pose potential health risks to users.

“The Authority, through a Type Approval process, ensures that all ICT devices comply with national and international standards related to safety, health, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), thereby protecting consumers from hazardous products, minimizing health risks, and preventing harmful interference with other electronic equipment.

“Through market surveillance, the Authority has noted an influx of Non-Type Approved mobile phones which pose a safety and health risk to the users,” read the statement in part.

The 21 flagged mobile brands include: Tinsik, Realfone, F+, Fonrox, Mez, Nemojo, Vue, Bundy, Qqmee, U-Fm, and Chatada.

Other brands are: Superx, Momofly, Wr, X.Oda, Smba, Q-Seven, Ugbad, Ft, Raeno, and Switch.

The regulator also prohibited vendors from selling the 21 flagged brands to members of the public.

“The authority therefore advises the public not to buy the above non-type-approved brands of mobile phones, and vendors are strictly prohibited from selling the same,” Mugonyi stated.

The CA Director General advised Kenyans to buy mobile phones only from licensed telecommunication equipment vendors listed on the CA website.

Mugonyi also urged the public to always verify whether a device has been type-approved before purchase

“Verify that any mobile phone they purchase has been type-approved by the Authority by checking the list of type-approved equipment available on the Authority’s website at: https://www.ca.go.ke/licensee-register,” Mugonyi added.

Kenyans can also check the authenticity of a mobile phone by dialing *#06# to retrieve the IMEI number and sending the 15-digit code via SMS to 1555, or by using the IMEI checker on the Authority’s website, free of charge.

KeNHA issues 7-day eviction notice to traders along Thika Superhighway

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a seven-day notice directing roadside traders to clear all encroachments along sections of the Thika Superhighway, citing road safety concerns and the planned construction of designated bus bays.

According to a notice issued on Monday, January 9, the directive targets traders at Roysambu in both directions and Githurai on the Nairobi-bound side.

KeNHA instructed all traders operating within the affected sections to remove their wares from the road reserve within seven days from the date of the notice.

“Kenya National Highways Authority wishes to notify all roadside traders along the Thika Superhighway at the Roysambu (Both directions) and Githurai (Nairobi direction) sections to clear their wares from the road reserve within seven (7) days of this notice,” the notice read.

KeNHA stated that the clearance is intended to create space for the construction of bus bays to improve public transport and ease congestion.

“This is to pave the way for the construction of designated bus bays, aimed at ensuring safe and orderly passenger pick-up and drop-off, as well as reducing traffic congestion along the affected sections,” the notice added.

KeNHA added that the planned construction is part of its wider road safety program aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring smooth traffic flow along the highway.

“The project is part of KeNHA’s ongoing road safety improvement initiatives that seek to reduce accidents and ensure the unobstructed flow of traffic along the Highway,” the notice concluded.

King ‘ready to support’ police as they assess Andrew claims over Epstein

King Charles has made his first intervention in the latest round of revelations in the Epstein scandal, saying Buckingham Palace is ready to support the police as they consider allegations against his brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

“The King has made clear, in words and through unprecedented actions, his profound concern at allegations which continue to come to light in respect of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s conduct,” a Palace spokesman said.

“While the specific claims in question are for Mr Mountbatten-Windsor to address, if we are approached by Thames Valley Police we stand ready to support them as you would expect,” he said.

Thames Valley Police confirmed it is assessing whether there are grounds to investigate a complaint by the anti-monarchy group Republic, which reported Mountbatten-Windsor for suspected misconduct in public office and breach of official secrets.

After the trips, on 30 November 2010, he appears to have forwarded official reports of those visits sent by his then-special adviser, Amit Patel, to Epstein, five minutes after receiving them.

There were also details of investment opportunities in Afghanistan, described as “confidential”, which appear to have been passed on to Epstein on 24 December 2010.

Under official guidance, trade envoys have a duty of confidentiality over sensitive, commercial, or political information about their official visits.

The Buckingham Palace statement says that the King and Queen’s “thoughts and sympathies have been, and remain with, the victims of any and all forms of abuse”.

Hong Kong Media Tycoon Jimmy Lai Sentenced to 20 Years in National Security Case

HONG KONG

Jimmy Lai, the 78-year-old pro-democracy media tycoon and a fierce critic of Beijing, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday in the most severe punishment handed down under Hong Kong’s national security law, which Beijing imposed in 2020.

Lai was convicted in December on charges of conspiring with foreign forces and publishing seditious articles—crimes that carried a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The sentence is seen as a definitive milestone in the law’s use to silence political opposition in the former British colony.

His eight co-defendants, including six former employees of his now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper and two activists, received prison terms ranging from six years and three months to 10 years on related collusion charges.

Lai smiled and waved to supporters upon entering the courtroom but left solemnly as some in the public gallery wept. His lawyer, Robert Pang, declined to comment on whether an appeal would be filed.

If History Repeats, Bad Bunny Will Outdraw Kid Rock in Super Bowl Halftime Show

SEATTLE

While the Seattle Seahawks celebrated their Super Bowl victory Monday morning, another competition from Sunday night remained too close to call: the unofficial ratings battle between the NFL’s official halftime performer, Bad Bunny, and a rival show headlined by conservative rocker Kid Rock.

Official Nielsen ratings for Bad Bunny’s halftime show, which weaved a celebration of Puerto Rican culture into the biggest U.S. television event of the year, will be released Tuesday.

The main halftime broadcast typically draws well over 100 million viewers.

A competing performance was organized by the conservative group Turning Point USA. Spokesperson Andrew Kolvet told Fox News on Sunday that “at one point” roughly 10 million people were watching the Kid Rock simulcast across all social media platforms.

On Monday, the group declined to provide exact figures. YouTube’s public metrics showed its live stream of the event peaked at just under 5 million concurrent viewers.

The duel highlighted a cultural divide, pitting the NFL’s global pop spectacle against a deliberately counter-programmed event aimed at a different audience.

For now, each side claims a victory—one in tradition and scale, the other in digital reach and political statement—leaving the definitive viewership winner to be settled by the official numbers.

Catherine O’Hara’s Death Caused by Pulmonary Embolism; Underlying Cancer Cited

LOS ANGELES

The cause of death for beloved comic actor Catherine O’Hara has been determined to be a pulmonary embolism, with cancer listed as the underlying cause.

A Los Angeles County death certificate issued Monday names the pulmonary embolism—a blockage in an artery of the lungs—as the immediate cause of the “Schitt’s Creek” and “Home Alone” star’s death on Jan. 30 at age 71.

It lists rectal cancer as the long-term cause.

The oncologist who signed the certificate indicated he had been treating O’Hara since March of last year and last saw her on Jan. 27. She died at a hospital in Santa Monica, California.

The Canadian-born actor, an alum of the landmark sketch show “SCTV,” was best known for her roles as Macaulay Culkin’s mother in two “Home Alone” movies and as the melodramatic matriarch Moira Rose on “Schitt’s Creek,” for which she won an Emmy.

Her death came as a surprise to the public, and an initial statement from her representatives said only that she died “following a brief illness.”

Collaborators including Culkin, Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, and Pedro Pascal paid tribute to her following her passing.

The document states she was cremated, listed her profession as “actress,” and noted she had worked in the business for 50 years.

Ukrainian Olympian Banned from Wearing Helmet Tribute to Fallen Athletes

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy

Vladyslav Heraskevych, a Ukrainian skeleton racer and Olympic medal hopeful, arrived at the Winter Games with a new helmet bearing the faces of fellow Ukrainian athletes killed by Russian attacks.

He intended it as a tribute, a gesture of remembrance for his nation’s fallen sportsmen and women.

On Monday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) told him he could not wear it.

The men’s skeleton competitor — who placed fourth at last year’s world championships — had trained in the helmet earlier Monday, awaiting a final ruling from Olympic officials on whether he could use it in competition later this week.

That decision came down hours later. The IOC said no, Heraskevych told The Associated Press, citing its rule against political statements during the Games.

“We didn’t violate any rules, and it should be allowed for me to compete with this helmet,” Heraskevych said. “I cannot understand how this helmet hurts anyone. It’s to pay tribute to athletes, some of them medalists in the Youth Olympic Games.

That means they’re Olympic family. They were part of this Olympic family, so I cannot understand why they would find a reason to say no.”

Even Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy weighed in on social media, thanking the athlete for “reminding the world the price of our struggle.”

Heraskevych is slated to compete on Saturday and Sunday. Without a last-minute reversal, he will race helmetless, or in another design, with his tribute deemed too political for the field of play.

Court Releases Suspect On 20K Bail In Case Involving Threats Against Nominated Senetor Lemaletian

By Andrew Kariuki

The Milimani Magistrates court has released a suspect on a Ksh20,000 cash bail in a case involving alleged threats made against Nominated Senator Hezena Lemaletian, after finding no compelling reason to grant the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) a seven-day detention order.

The suspect, who was arrested on Friday, opposed an application by the DCI seeking to detain him for seven days to allow completion of investigations into alleged threatening messages sent to the senator, arguing that the request was excessive and violated his constitutional rights.

Addressing the court, the accused disputed claims by the prosecution that he had no fixed abode, stating that he resides in Buruburu with his wife and two children and does not live in his car, which had already been impounded by police.

He also told the court that investigators already had possession of his phone, SIM cards, vehicle details and other materials, arguing that continued detention would not add value to the investigations.

“Your Honour, the prosecution should stop speaking on my behalf. I do not live in a car. I am not a bird,” the accused stated, while requesting reasonable bail terms and informing the court that he is currently unemployed.

In its ruling, the court held that the prosecution had not demonstrated that the accused posed to be a flight risk, had no permanent residence or was likely to interfere with witnesses or evidence, noting that the key investigative materials were already in the investigators’ custody.

The court therefore declined to grant the detention order and released the accused on a Ksh20,000 cash bail, with the requirement of one contact person, pending further investigations.

The matter is set for mention on February 16
