17 years Ansu Fati continue shining with 10 goals

Ansu Fati became only the second 17-year-old to reach 10 La Liga goals for Barcelona as they beat Celta Vigo.

Fati opened the scoring with a clever first touch and finish after being picked out by Philippe Coutinho, his third goal in two games this season.

Ronald Koeman’s Barca went down to 10 men in the first half when Clement Lenglet was sent off for two bookings.

Lionel Messi’s cross was then diverted into his own net by Lucas Olaza and Sergi Roberto smashed in a late third.

Celta went close to pulling one back at 2-0 but Miguel Baeza’s deflected shot hit the crossbar.

Bojan is the only other player to reach double figures in league goals for Barca before his 18th birthday. Spain international Fati’s 10 goals have come in 26 league games. Messi took 30 matches to reach that figure.

Fati has scored three of Barca’s seven league goals this season, having netted twice in the 4-0 opening-day win over Villarreal. They have benefited from two own goals, with Messi and Roberto their other scorers.

Djokovic reaches third round with dominant start

Novak Djokovic continued his dominant start to the French Open with a ruthless straight-set win against Lithuanian world number 66 Ricardas Berankis in the second round.

The world number one won 6-1 6-2 6-2, meaning he has lost just 10 games in his first two matches.

Djokovic, 33, is one of the favourites to win the tournament and put together an almost flawless performance to triumph in one hour and 23 minutes.

“I felt really good,” Djokovic said.

“I hope I can carry on like this.”

The top seed has tough competition for the title in Spain’s 12-time champion Rafael Nadal and Austria’s two-time runner-up Dominic Thiem but he looked focused and in control against Berankis on the Roland Garros clay.

After dropping just five games in his first-round win against Sweden’s Mikael Ymer, the Serb continued his bid for an 18th Grand Slam title in equally brutal fashion.

Djokovic broke Berankis’s serve in the first game of the match and went on to win the first set in 22 minutes, with the Lithuanian 30-year-old winning just 10 points.

A further two breaks helped Djokovic take the second set and his level continued to rise even higher as Berankis struggled with a back injury.

In total, the world number one served 10 aces, hit 25 winners and won 95% of points on his first serve to claim an easy victory.

“Right from the blocks I want to bring in the intensity,” he told Eurosport.

“I managed to do that in the past two matches. It’s exactly how I want to roll into the match.”

Djokovic will face either Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan, who beat American world number 47 Tennys Sandgren, next.

Unbeaten on the court this year, Djokovic’s only defeat in 2020 came when he was defaulted from his US Open last-16 match against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta after hitting a line judge with a ball.

Lewandowski wins men’s Player of the Year as Chelsea forward Harder take women’s

Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski has been named Uefa men’s Player of the Year 2019-20.

Poland striker Lewandowski, 32, beat Bayern team-mate Manuel Neuer and Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne to the award.

Bayern’s Hansi Flick was named men’s coach of the year after leading his side to a sixth European title.

Lewandowski scored 55 goals in 47 games last season as Bayern won the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup.

He scored 16 more goals than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues across all competitions in 2019-20.

Chelsea forward Pernille Harder received the women’s Player of the Year award.

Manchester City playmaker De Bruyne, 29, was named Champions League midfielder of the year – and in doing so prevented a Bayern clean sweep of all the men’s awards.

The Belgium midfielder also won the Professional Footballers’ Association men’s Players’ Player of the Year award in September.

Germany’s Neuer, 34, won goalkeeper of the year after recording six clean sheets in the Champions League as Bayern defeated Paris St-Germain in August’s final, while team-mate Joshua Kimmich, 25, was named best defender.

Flick beat Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp – who guided the club to their first Premier League title in 30 years – and RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann to the coach of the year award.

Flick, 55, stepped up from his role as Bayern assistant coach last November following the sacking of Niko Kovac.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba was awarded the Uefa President’s Award by Aleksander Ceferin for a “commitment to excellence both on and off the pitch”.

The Uefa awards were announced alongside the Champions League group stage draw in Geneva, although club officials did not attend due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Player of the year voting was decided by the 80 coaches of the clubs in last season’s European competitions, along with 55 journalists – one from each of Uefa members’ association.

US President Trump and wife test positive for Covid-19

US President Donald Trump has said he and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for coronavirus and are now in quarantine.

The president, aged 74 and therefore in a high-risk group, announced the news in a tweet. “We will get through this together,” he wrote.

It comes after one of his closest aides tested positive for coronavirus.

Hope Hicks, the 31-year-old adviser to the president, was the closest aide to Mr Trump to test positive so far.

She travelled with him on Air Force One to the first presidential TV debate with Democratic rival Joe Biden in Ohio on Tuesday. Some of Mr Trump’s family members who attended the debate were seen not wearing masks.

Mr Trump has mostly spurned mask-wearing and has often been pictured not socially distanced with aides or others during official engagements.

Mr Trump’s physician, Sean Conley, released a statement, saying the president and the first lady were “both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence”.

“Rest assured I expect the president to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments,” the statement said.

Kenya’s implementation of Beijing Platform for Action on track, President Kenyatta says

Kenya’s implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action that advocates for gendar equality as well as empowerment of women and girls is firmly on track, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said.

In a recorded video statement,President Kenyatta said the Beijing Platform for Action remains a powerful source of inspiration in the advancement of the rights of women and girls.

“Let me inform you that gender equality remains central to the development agenda of my administration and indeed as enshrined by our Constitution of Kenya,” President Kenyatta added.

The President’s recorded video statement was delivered during a virtual high-level meeting at the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 2020) to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and UNGA 2020 President Volkan Bozkir physically addressed the opening segment of the meeting before other world leaders including President Xi Jinping of China delivered their statements in a recorded video format.

President Kenyatta said Kenya has adopted a robust policy and legal frameworks to promote, enforce and monitor the realization of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls.

“Our national blue print for development, which we call our Vision 2030, outlines flagship projects for the promotion of gender equality, inclusive economic growth, prevention and response to gender based violence, elimination of female genital mutilation and other harmful practices, gender Mainstreaming and the empowerment of the girl child,” he said.

With respect to economic empowerment, the Pesident said his administration has invested inwomen through a catalytic fund equivalent to over US 600 million dollars and over 3 million women have been trained on entrepreneurship skills and linked to large enterprises through market support and linkage programmes.

“We are also implementing a transformative social protection measure, through major cash transfer programmes with nationwide coverage, which today benefits over 500,000 vulnerable households,” the President said.

President Kenyatta also outlined the achievement made by the Government in support of women and girls in the areas of education, health and leadership.

The President pointed out that his administration is especially steadfast in its commitment to end gender based biolence and harmful cultural practices.

“I have, in this regard, committed to have our communities who practice FGM, as a culture to signify maturity and importance of girls, that there are other better ways of achieving these cultural goals,” the President said.

President Kenyatta added that Kenya’s interventions supporting the rights of women and girls are reinforced by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the  African Union Agenda 2063 that is focused on unleashing the potential of women and youth.

While noting that 2020 was supposed to be a pivotal year for accountability to delivering on the Beijing promises and in accelerating change, the President cautioned that the emergence COVID-19 threatens to reverse the gains made.

“I believe this is a wake-up call, a call to strengthen our resolve to move forward and to demonstrate our resilience by accepting the challenges that we are experiencing and see them rather as an opportunity to build back better and stronger,” he said.

To mitigate against the pandemic, the President said his administration adopted policy interventions facilitating economic relief packages and established a COVID-19 emergency fund to mobilize resources towards curbing the spread, the effect and impact of the virus.

“The Fund has continued to support implementation of targeted interventions in the country to cushion Kenyans and especially women from COVID-19 shocks,” he said.

United Nations Secretary General Guterres said the COVID-19 pandemic, though catastrophic, it gives leaders an opportunity to adopt a transformative thinking that puts women at the centre of response and recovery.

On his part, Mr Bozkir, the President of the 75th Session of UNGA urged leaders not to view women empowerment as a threat but a key cog in achieving global development aspirations including peace and stability.

Malawi MPs reject condom donation

Lawmakers in Malawi have rejected a donation of more than 200,000 condoms from the Aids Health Foundation.

They were to be placed in toilets within parliament buildings.

The leader of the majority, Richard Chimwendo, said members of parliament did not need such a donation as they can afford condoms.

The donation was given to the chairperson of the wellness committee, Maggie Chinsinga.

Mr Chimwendo said a report published by a local newspaper on the donation had injured the reputation of MPs.

The report had quoted Ms Chinsinga as saying that parliament dispenses about 10,000 condoms every month and sometimes “runs out of stock,” Malawi’s Nation newspaper wrote.

The Deputy Speaker, Madaliotso Kazombo, said that was not true and demanded an apology.

Audit report: Lost Covid-19 billions to corruption

Kenya lost 2.3bn Kenyan shillings ($21m; £16m) during the procurement of Covid-19 items, according to a recent audit report.

Auditor General Nancy Gathangu said managers at the state body responsible for purchases, the Kenya Medical Supply Authority (Kemsa) violated procurement rules leading to the loss of public money.

The government ordered an investigation following a public outcry.

Kemsa has denied that any money was stolen.

The audit report says that Kemsa bosses colluded with companies that were given contracts. Some of the companies were registered around the time the country recorded its first Covid-19 case.

Items were overpriced and some procured in excess and are still at the Kemsa warehouses.

It says the state body also diverted money meant for the universal health coverage programme and purchased Covid-19 items without approval from the ministry.

The auditor general recommended an independent audit of the transactions. She also urged investigating agencies to probe any criminality in the procurement process.

The report comes after local media reported that Covid-19 donations from Chinese billionaire Jack Ma were stolen, diverted and sold instead of being distributed.

Buhari urges unity on Nigeria’s 60th anniversary

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed for unity as the country celebrates its 60th independence anniversary.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on 1 October 1960. Seven years later, a civil war erupted as the south-eastern region tried to form the breakaway Biafra state.

Millions of people are believed to have been killed before the war ended in 1970.

Tensions have persisted between the north and south and there have been rivalries between ethnic groups.

”An underlying cause of most of the problems we have faced as a nation is in our consistent harping on artificially contrived fault-lines that we have harboured and allowed unnecessarily to fester,” President Buhari said in a televised address on Thursday.

He promised to consolidate Nigeria’s democracy and called for patriotism.

The president suggested that Nigeria’s population – now around 200 million and projected to be the third highest in the world by 2050 – is both a challenge and an asset for the country.

The president said Nigeria’s revenues dropped by 60% this year largely due to the fall in global oil prices in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

He defended his government decision to withdraw a fuel subsidy which saw fuel prices rise by 11% in recent weeks. He said the subsidy was unsustainable.

Mr Buhari said his government had managed to keep the economy moving despite lean resources and what he called “disproportionate” spending on security problems.

US concerned about ‘tense’ Tanzania elections

The US ambassador to Tanzania Donald J. Wright has expressed concern over “increased tension” ahead of the general election.

He is the latest envoy to urge for free and fair elections in the East African country.

Mr Wright urged all political parties to commit to a peaceful election, saying he had received reports of “politically motivated violence”.

Tanzanians will head to the polls on 28 October.

The opposition has accused President John Magufuli of planning to rig the election.

In September, 10 foreign missions in Tanzania called for a free and fair election amid concerns by rights group about increased repression of opposition parties and non-governmental organizations.

Heavy fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan enters day 5

Heavy shelling between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces has been reported around the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region as fighting raged for a fifth day, with both sides refusing to back down and heed international calls for talks.

(Aljazeera) The fiercest clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces in years over the breakaway region were ignited on Sunday, leaving scores from both sides dead.

Azerbaijan’s general prosecutor’s office said on Thursday that Armenian shelling killed a civilian in its city of Terter, about 90km from Nagorno-Karabakh, in the morning and badly damaged the train station there.

“The enemy attempted to regroup its troops, but Armenian forces suppressed all such attempts,” they said.

Armenian authorities also claimed that two French nationals working as journalists for Le Monde were injured on Thursday during shelling by Azeri forces in the Armenian town of Martuni, west of the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
