Expressway: KeNHA to transplant 100-year old Mugumo tree

The Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) will transplant a Mugumo tree in wetlands to a project operation centre.

KeNHA Director General Engineer Peter Mundinia is said to have ordered CRBC to relocate the tree to the operation centre…and preserve the environment.

The Mugumo tree is more than 100 years old and is utilised by motorists as free shade for cars.

“This iconic fig tree sits right at the center of the Nairobi Expressway operation area. We have planned to transplant and relocate the tree to a new location as part of our environmental conservation efforts.” KeNHA said in a tweet.

The Country Government of Nairobi and its precursor have preserved the tree. It is located in a road reserve.

The move came after several trees were cut down to prepare the way for the Nairobi Expressway.

However, despite the notion that KeNHA was out to destroy the environment, the authority said in its Environmental assessment that a tree planting exercise was due after the construction is complete.

The project will see the construction of an elevated highway between Bellevue and James Gichuru Road.

This is the technology KeNHA will employ to safe the iconic Mugumo tree in Westlands

COVID-19 vaccine campaign suffers set back

Two of the frontrunners in the global race for a coronavirus vaccine are unlikely to be ready before the US election on November 3, dashing President Donald Trump’s campaign promise of delivering doses by the time of the vote.

Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said Wednesday that the company will not have enough data to file for emergency use authorization of its vaccine candidate until November 25, weeks after Americans go to the polls.

Public health experts have expressed concern that the Trump administration is expediting the development process, undermining the safety and efficacy of a future vaccine.

In Tuesday’s presidential debate, Trump said he had spoken to the major vaccine makers, including Moderna, and that they told him a vaccine could be available soon.

Nobody,” he said, adding that the earliest Moderna’s candidate could be available for public use is late March or early April next year.

Meanwhile, drugmaker AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine trial in the United States is still on hold after a participant developed a serious illness, but, speaking at the US Pharma and Biotech Summit hosted by the Financial Times on Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration commissioner would not say why.

There are currently nine Covid-19 vaccine candidates in late-stage, large clinical trials around the world, according to the World Health Organization.

The World Health Organization said dozens of vaccines worldwide are in human trials.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, has hit back at the President, saying his early opinions about mask use were “taken out of context. ” Fauci explained that “very early on in the pandemic,” public health experts did not recommend masks to the general public because they were worried about shortages.

WHO plans to distribute rapid COVID-19 test kits to poorer nations at $5 each

The quick tests, to be distributed in 133 countries over the next six months, are not the most reliable but are fast, cheap and easy to carry out.

Some 120 million rapid tests for Covid-19 will be made available to poorer countries at $5 each, the World Health Organization announced Monday – if it can find the money.

The WHO said the $600 million scheme would enable low- and middle-income countries to close the dramatic gap in testing for the new coronavirus, which has now killed more than a million people since first being recorded in China in December.

The quick tests, to be distributed across 133 countries over the next six months, are not as reliable as the regular PCR nasal swab tests but are far faster, cheaper and easier to carry out.

“We have an agreement, we have seed funding and now we need the full amount of funds to buy these tests,” WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press conference.

Last week, the WHO issued the first emergency-use listing for a quality, antigen-based rapid diagnostic test (RDT), with others expected to follow.

“A substantial proportion of these rapid tests – 120 million – will be made available to low- and middle-income countries,” said Tedros.

“These tests provide reliable results in approximately 15 to 30 minutes, rather than hours or days, at a lower price, with less sophisticated equipment.

“This will enable the expansion of testing, particularly in hard-to-reach areas that do not have lab facilities or enough trained health workers to carry out PCR tests.”

No lab required

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which is co-convening the WHO-led pooled global search for Covid-19 diagnostics, is putting in $50 million from its Covid-19 response pot.

Global Fund executive director Peter Sands said the RDTs were no silver bullet but were a hugely valuable complement to PCR tests.

“Although they are a bit less accurate, they’re much faster, cheaper and don’t require a lab,” said Sands.

“This will enable low- and middle-income countries to begin to close the dramatic gap in testing.”

Sands, said that currently, high-income countries were conducting 292 tests per day per 1,00,000 people; upper-middle-income countries 77; lower-middle-income countries, 61; and low-income countries, 14.

He said that if the poorest countries were testing at the same rate as the richest, 120 million tests would not last two weeks.

The tests could be used where PCR tests are unavailable; quickly testing contacts where a PCR test has confirmed a case; and in places with widespread community transmission.

Sands said the first orders were going in this week.

The tests are being produced by two companies: US multinational Abbott Laboratories and South Korea-based SD BioSensor.

The 120 million tests reflect 20 percent of the firms’ manufacturing capacity. The other 80 percent remain available for procurement.

By 1600 GMT Monday, the respiratory disease had claimed 1,002,432 victims from 33,178,275 recorded infections, according to an AFP tally collected from official sources.

“The current numbers are likely an under-estimate of the true toll,” said WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan.

He said Friday that another million deaths were “highly likely” before a vaccine comes around, unless countries and individuals take collective action to combat the spread of the virus.

Google to pay 1 Billion dollars to news publishers

Google has vowed to pay over $1 billion in the next three years through a new program for licensing news.

(CNN Business) Google will pay publishers more than $1 billion over the next three years through a new program for licensing news.

The billion dollar spend on licensing news is Google’s way of showing publishers it is committed to paying for high quality journalism and sustaining a struggling industry.

Google and Facebook Inc. have faced heat from news executives and regulators around the world who’ve urged the platforms to pay for the rights to host news articles.

Publishers argue that their journalism is what’s drawing users to those platforms, while the two tech giants are capturing most of the online ad dollars. Thursday’s launch builds on a licensing program Google announced in June to “pay publishers for high-quality content.”

“Google News Showcase lets publishers curate stories on the news that matters, develop deeper relationships with readers and provides a new revenue stream for essential reporting,” Brad Bender, a Google vice president, added.

Eliud Kipchoge denies platform Nike shoes offer London race advantage

  • World record holder will wear Alphafly Next%s on Sunday, Critics of shoe should ‘open their hearts and move on’

Eliud Kipchoge has rejected suggestions that the next generation of game-changing Nike shoes violate the spirit of sport, even though he has conceded that they could give him a major advantage in Sunday’s London Marathon.

The world record holder confirmed that he would wear the Alphafly Next%s, which resemble platform shoes and are claimed to improve running economy by between 5-8%, for the first time in an official race.

World record times possible at London Marathon if rain stays away

There have been calls for the controversial running shoes to be banned, especially after the Kenyan used them to become the first person to break the two-hour barrier in an unofficial event in Vienna last October.

However, World Athletics has since ruled that such shoes are legal provided their stack height does not exceed 40mm and they obey certain other rules. Kipchoge insisted that it was time for critics of shoe technology to “open their hearts and move on”.

“We live in the 21st century and we need to accept change,” he said. “Development goes hand in hand with technology. The shoe is good. We are doing a press conference virtually, is that not technology? We should accept technology and marry technology.”

The Alphaflys are the latest in a line of Nike shoes, which employ a carbon plate and a special foam, that have helped the company’s athletes to dominate the marathon for the past four years. When asked whether that was fair, Kipchoge was unequivocal. “Absolutely, yes,” he replied.

Pressed on if it was unfair for athletes not sponsored by Nike, he added: “It’s good for Nike. On the other hand, it’s business. It’s good for Nike to be far higher than other companies as far as technology is concerned.”

However, the Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele, who is also sponsored by the American shoe giant, admitted that that he would not be wearing the Alphaflys on Sunday because they had given him injuries in training.

“It’s really difficult to adapt to these shoes, especially with speed workouts,” said Bekele, who missed out on Kipchoge’s marathon world record of 2:01:39 by just two seconds at the Berlin Marathon last year.

“Several times I had some minor injuries, like a muscle stretch. Because the shoe is not stable under the foot. It’s really unshaped. It’s really soft. The muscle needs to adjust to the movement under it. It’s really difficult.

“Anybody cannot use the shoes,” added Bekele, who said he would use the less high-spec Nike Next4%s instead. “For walking or normal life, it’s OK, you can do it. But to perform hard work in the shoe it’s really difficult.

“Eliud already had these shoes before one year ago. All of us other athletes got them maybe six months ago. Many of us were locked at home. Because of Covid you could not train as you wanted. So I had some problems with the shoes because I couldn’t adapt to it.”

“Your muscles have to adjust to these shoes. It’s not like normal shoes. It’s really difficult. I tried to investigate it with other athletes and most of them had problems with these shoes, too.”

A London Marathon spokesman confirmed that checks on shoes from all companies have been ongoing since Monday. He also indicated that Kipchoge’s shoes were compliant.

Cassava processing firm to open up opportunities for farmers

By Ramadhan Kambi

The construction of the Cassava milling plant in Tezo, Kilifi County is expected to be completed early next year, chief officer in charge of agriculture Fredrick Kaingu has said.

Once completed, the plant is going to play a key role in cassava value chain and open up a new market for cassava farmers in the county.

Already thousands of cassava farmers in the county are upbeat after the devolved government announced the move recently.

“We have a big number of farmers producing cassava in the county. Almost in every farm household, there is a cassava production and thus hence calls for commercialization of the crop. At the moment, the crop is being used as raw and sold in local markets in Malindi and Kilifi,” said Mr Kaingu.

He said the facility will be used for the processing of cassava chips among other value chain.

“We are aiming to have cassava chips that will be produced and secondly we are shall also be able to tap even the starch product that can be able to be extracted from cassava which is a high valued product required in the market. We are accelerating the efforts to make sure that the plant becomes operational early next year,” he said.

The plant will be fitted with, modern machines that will be able to chips the cassava to small chips.

“These chips are the ones we call the value added products. Many a times is when we go to the market and see people selling them but the way they handle make the populace not to be able to buy. But in this plant, we shall be producing the best and in big numbers to supermarkets,” said Mr Kaingu.

When he addressed the assembly recently, Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi said the county is among the top three cassava producing counties in Kenya after Kakamega and Bungoma counties and that the crop has been instrumental in averting food insecurity in the county.

“Last season, the county had a cassava surplus of 195 metric tonnes but lack of an organised market structure for the product caused unprecedented losses to farmers. The county has invested in construction of a Cassava Processing Plant in Tezo ward whose construction and completion has entered Phase two,” said Governor Kingi.

London Marathon 2020: Eliud Kipchoge says race can bring hope to the world

Kenya’s four-time winner and world record holder Eliud Kipchoge says this year’s unique edition of the London Marathon “can bring hope to the world”.

The race will be run over 19 laps of a closed course, screened from public view, as part of Covid-19 measures.

The mass participation element of the race will be run ‘virtually’ with only the elite fields gathering in London.

“We can bring hope to the world that we can train behind the scenes and come back in a strong way,” said Kipchoge.

Asked about his chances of retaining his title, Kipchoge replied: “Absolutely I am confident. I am ready and fit to run.”

Kipchoge admitted that that the absence of a crowd, which usually numbers tens of thousands, would make a “huge, huge difference” to the event.

The 35-year-old will be taking on Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, who was just two seconds off his rival’s world record in Berlin last year, in a keenly anticipated duel.

The pair have been backed by event director Hugh Brasher to bring the best out of each other despite the forecast wet weather.

“Whatever the conditions, we believe there will be some incredible racing that will live long in people’s memories,” said Brasher. “It could be incredibly quick.”

Mo Farah, four-time Olympic champion, will be one the pacemakers in the race, although focused on helping a mainly British group achieve the Olympic qualifying time of two hours 11 minutes 30 seconds.

Kipchoge’s world record stands at 2:01:39.

His landmark sub-two hour marathon in Austria last year is not classified as a record because of the nature of the pace-making help and other assistance he received in the time-trial event.

Mai Mahiu road tops agenda in Uhuru France visit

President Uhuru Kenyatta kicked off his official visit to France on Wednesday evening at Elysee Palace where he was received by his French host Emmanuel Macron. Elysee Palace is the French President’s official residence.  Upon his arrival at the Palace shortly after 9pm local time, President Kenyatta inspected a guard of honour mounted by the French military at the start of an elaborate State reception ceremony.

The two Heads of State then witnessed the signing of three bilateral agreements before leading their delegations at a State Banquet hosted in honour of the visiting Kenyan leader. Later, the two leaders retreated for private talks. Among the agreements reached is a public private partnership (PPP) for the construction of the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit highway signed between KeNHA and Vinci Concessions.

The highway is one of the largest PPP projects in Eastern Africa. Others were agreements for the development of the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) commuter railway line and the 400KV Menengai-Rongai electricity transmission line.

The Kenyan Head of State arrived in Paris on Tuesday evening. The plane carrying the President and his entourage touched down at Orly Airport, located 13 kilometers south of Paris, at 8pm local time. In an interview with PSCU ahead of President Kenyatta’s arrival in Paris, Kenya’s ambassador to France Professor Judi Wakhungu said the Head of State’s visit is a continuation of the historical bilateral ties that have existed between Kenya and France for over half a century.

The envoy said the President’s visit will particularly help to strengthen people-to-people and commercial ties between the two nations noting that over 100 French companies operate in Kenya.  “The largest component of our relationship is actually education. We have had Kenyan students in France for many years, we have also had French researchers in Kenya for very many years,” Prof Wakhungu said.  “When it comes to investment and the private sector, we have over 100 French companies operating in Kenya,” she added. Prof Wakhungu said President Kenyatta’s visit follows President Macron’s historic visit to Nairobi in March last year, the first such visit by a serving French Head of State.

The Kenyan ambassador also spoke about the benefits of some of the infrastructure projects that Kenya and France are jointly pursuing. She said the Nairobi CBD to JKIA commuter rail link whose construction  agreement was signed Wednesday at Elysee Palace  will help enhance movement of travellers between the city centre and Kenya’s foremost international airport. “Our aspiration is to see that this commuter railway line eases traffic in Nairobi but also eases the movement of people within Nairobi.

We hope that along the route and the surrounding areas, other businesses will be able to grow,” Prof Wakhungu said.  On the PPP agreement for the construction of the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit six-lane dual carriageway, the ambassador said the mega project will help decongest the existing highway and enhance efficiency of cargo transport to Western Kenya and onwards into the export markets of East and Central Africa. “We hope that extending this highway which is going to be about 200km, again, it will ease traffic on that particular very, very important route.

I need not remind Kenyans that this is a major highway that connects Mombasa, Nairobi and all the way to Uganda, Rwanda and other parts of Central Africa,” Prof Wakhungu said.  Today, President Kenyatta will deliver the key note address at the BPI France Inno Generation 2020 business forum, the European country’s largest international innovation and entrepreneurship extravaganza which brings together hundreds of French companies to explore investment opportunities abroad.

The Kenyan President will speak about investment opportunities in Africa at the forum during which he is expected to woo French companies to invest in Kenya. At the forum that will be held at the iconic Accor Arena, President Kenyatta will be hosted by President Macron on whose invitation the Kenya Head of State is gracing this year’s BPI France Inno Generation as its guest of honour.

On Friday, 2nd October, President Kenyatta will  preside over the Kenya-France business forum organized by the French Business Confederation (Movement Des Entreprises De France (MEDEF)). The meeting will bring together investors from the Kenya and France to discuss investment opportunities in Kenya as well as explore avenues for increasing Kenyan exports into the lucrative French market. President Kenyatta is accompanied on his France visit by Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs), Ukur Yatani (Treasury), James Macharia (Infrastructure) and Betty Maina (Trade).
