Parliament Speaker Muturi Isolated, To Be crowned As Mount Kenya ‘Spokesman’

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi is expected to be crowned as the official Mt Kenya spokesman on Saturday, May 22.

Speculation was rife over his absence from parliament despite a key ruling that approved the Nomination of Martha Koome as Chief Justice.

According to elders, his ritual purification was necessary before being crowned at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine in Muranga county.

The Speaker stated that he is willing to listen to the elders’ advise and do whatever is expected of him.

On the politics of his coronation, the House speaker stated that there would always be differing opinions.

Muturi stated that he was attempting to consult as many people as possible in order to figure out how to respond to everyone’s thoughts.

As part of the rules, Muturi is barred from leaving his house, eating certain foods, entertaining visitors, or seeing women. Only elder citizens who have been ritually cleaned are allowed to interact with him.

Muturi will also reflect on the country’s current state while sitting by a river near his house in Muthaiga, Nairobi.

Following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s resignation in 2022, Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth are among the leaders vying to be the region’s spokesman.

Their supporters have spoken out against the scheduled ritual, with some elders claiming that it would be sacrilegious since it has political overtones.

On Wednesday, the secretary-general of the Murang’a council of elders, Samuel Ruru Ng’anga, said elders from the broader Mt Kenya were in accord that the speaker be raised to the position.
