Pedestrians Fined 5,000 For Ignoring Footbridge

More than 300 people were arrested on Friday for crossing the Outer Ring Road at undesignated spots.

The operation was carried out by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) in collaboration with the Kenya Police, according to Chief Inspector Stephen Njoroge.

Pedestrians who did not use the road’s numerous footbridges were loaded into two police trucks, which made multiple journeys to the City Court. They received fines ranging from Sh500 to Sh3,000.

Those who were unable to pay their fines were escorted to police cells and will be held over the weekend.

Kura has stepped up efforts to reduce road fatalities, with one of the first steps being to ensuring that footbridges are in good operating shape.

Pedestrians crossing roadways in non-designated areas, according to Kura Director-General Eng Silas Kinoti, would be detained and charged in court.

“One of the main reasons is that Kenyans are usually in a hurry and do not want to put in the effort to defend themselves,” he continued.

He did admit, though, that it was a difficult task for the agency, but that they are working with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the police to raise awareness about the importance of using footbridges.
