300 Bandits Ambush Patrol, Kill Four Police Officers

On spotting the security team, bandits amounting to about 200 started shooting indiscriminately at the officers who returned fire.

Four police officers were among six people killed in a bandit attack on the Kitale-Lodwar highway in Turkana County’s Kaakong area.

After being ambushed by bandits in a gunfight that lasted hours into the night, seven police officers, including the sub-county Police Commander, are nursing gunshot wounds.

The fierce gunfight was captured on video by a passenger in a vehicle that was part of a police-escorted convoy, and it showed about 300 bandits in the bush.

“On spotting the security team, bandits amounting to about 200 started shooting indiscriminately at the officers who returned fire.”

“As the security officers were concentrating on neutralizing the attackers, they were attacked from behind by another group of about 100 armed bandits surrounding the officers from all directions,” the police report read in part.

The armed bandits deflated the tires on three land cruisers and other vehicles used by the officers.

Two officers were killed on the scene, and the number of injured has yet to be confirmed.

The officers were treated at Kainuk health center before being referred to Mediheal Group of Hospitals in Eldoret for further treatment.
