Police Boss Promotion Recalled Two Days After Appointment

Former Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) boss John Gachomo was recalled to police headquarters at Jogoo House a day after he was promoted to lead the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU).

This came just two days after Gachomo was named Director of IAU to succeed Mohamed Amin, the new Director General of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation.

According to sources, Gachomo was about to take over when he was called back to Jogoo House to await further deployment.

Current IAU deputy director Esther Nganga, a police commissioner who is also a lawyer, has been ordered to take over in the interim while a substantive appointment is made.

The motive for the changes was not immediately known.

The unit is currently handling dozens of complaints against police, among them claims of extra-judicial killings.

Other changes made by the acting IG that stayed included Nicholas Ireri’s promotion to Deputy Director at DCI, Eliud Kipkoech’s and Johnstone Kola’s appointments as the director of the Investigations Bureau and ATPU director, respectively.
