Police Call Off Azimio’s ‘Non-Shareholders’ Town Hall Meeting In Murang’a

Police have cancelled a town hall meeting scheduled for Thursday, April 20 in Murang’a County organised by the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.

Murang’a police commander David Mathiu denied Azimio’s request to hold the meeting, claiming that police were already deployed elsewhere.

According to Mathiu, a notice must be submitted four days in advance.

Azimio presented it on Tuesday, two days before their scheduled meeting.

As a result, the meeting will not be held.

Azimio-allied leaders such as Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, George Wajackoyah, Mwangi wa Iria, and Jeremiah Kioni were expected to attend the town hall meeting.

The former Murang’a governor was at the Murang’a police station on Tuesday to submit the notice, stating that the meeting will be purely an engagement forum between the leaders and the locals, with the main agenda being seeking inclusion in the government.

Wa Iria had said he will hold a meeting with ‘non-shareholders’ on Thursday in Murang’a town to give Kenyans a platform to give their input and demand their rights.

Azimio’s first town hall meeting in the Mt. Kenya region would take place just days after another in Nairobi on April 13.

Parties invited to the meeting included trade unions, farmer associations, small businesses, civil society organisations, veterans, human rights activists, intellectuals, and faith-based organisations.
