The National Police Service (NPS) has strongly dismissed allegations that its officers are abetting hired goons to cause mayhem during the ongoing Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition demonstrations in Nairobi.
According to the NPS, these are merely propaganda aimed at tarnishing the reputation of Kenyan police officers.
“We wish to bring to the attention of the General public that such unfounded and malicious claims are not only intended to cause unnecessary fear in the society but are also deliberate moves meant to tarnish the image of the National Police Service,” a statement from the NPS reads in part.
The NPS adds: “As a law enforcement agency, we wish to reiterate our commitment to discharge our Constitutional mandate which is to serve and protect, without fear or favor, while adhering to the rule of law and utmost respect for human rights.”
Recently, the police have come under sharp criticism for the manner in which they have handled the opposition coalition’s protesters in Nairobi.
