Police officers in Kilifi County have intercepted a significant consignment of suspected narcotic drugs during a routine security operation at the Sabaki Bridge checkpoint.

The incident, which occurred on April 7, 2026, involved a motor vehicle that had been flagged down for inspection. Upon conducting a search, officers discovered a sack concealed within the vehicle’s cargo area, which was reportedly transporting bags of rice.

Inside the sack, officers recovered numerous rolls of dry plant material wrapped in khaki paper, believed to be cannabis, commonly referred to as bhang. The substance had been hidden beneath the food supplies in what authorities suspect was an attempt to evade detection.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and later escorted to Malindi Police Station, where he remains in custody pending further processing and investigation.

The vehicle used in the transportation, along with the recovered exhibits, has been detained as part of ongoing investigations.

Authorities say the interception is part of heightened surveillance along key transit routes aimed at disrupting the movement of illegal substances.

The National Police Service has reiterated its commitment to tackling drug trafficking and has called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
