Police are investigating the abduction and murder of Zambia’s newly appointed broadcasting regulator chief, Guntila Muleya.
His body was discovered on the outskirts of Lusaka on Wednesday, bearing gunshot wounds.
Mr. Muleya’s death has shocked the nation, as gun violence is rare in Zambia, and the motive remains unknown.
Police suspect that the director general of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) was kidnapped after leaving work on Tuesday.
The IBA, responsible for licensing, standards, and enforcing compliance, confirmed that Mr. Muleya failed to return home on Tuesday night.
His family alerted the police, initiating a search. His body was found by a member of the public on their way to work. Two bullet cartridges were recovered at the scene.
Thabo Kawana, the top civil servant in Zambia’s information ministry, assured the nation that those responsible would be apprehended.
“I want to assure the nation on this sad development that the people involved in this gruesome murder of the IBA director general will be brought to book,” Kawana told journalists.
Mr. Muleya, who took over at the IBA in May, was previously the general manager for South African pay TV firm MultiChoice in Zambia.
The IBA expressed deep sorrow over his death and pledged to uphold the values and vision he championed during his brief tenure.
