Police Probe Death of Woman Found in River Kuja, Migori County

Authorities in Migori County have launched an investigation after the body of a 38-year-old woman was discovered in River Kuja, raising concerns about a possible suicide.

The deceased, identified as Hilda Otieno, was found floating in the river in Nyanginja village, Awendo Sub-County, according to Kanyasrega Assistant Chief Ezekiel Kokeyo. Local residents alerted authorities after spotting the body.

Otieno’s family had reported her missing several days earlier from her home in Nairobi. While the exact cause of death is yet to be determined, preliminary information suggests she may have taken her own life.

“Investigations are ongoing, but at this point, suicide is a strong possibility,” said Kokeyo.

Family members revealed that Otieno had been battling depression following the recent death of her husband. Prior to her disappearance, she reportedly sent Ksh.40,000 to her younger brother, instructing him to use the money to care for her children.

The body has been taken to a local morgue for a post-mortem examination as police continue efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.

Mental health advocates have urged increased support services for those grieving the loss of loved ones, highlighting the need for timely intervention in such cases.
