Police Recover Body of Man Who Drowned While Taking Selfie At Gicheru Water Falls

The body of a 26-year-old man who fell into Gicheru Water Falls in Kirinyaga County has been found.

According to Gichugu Sub-County Police Commander Edward Ndirangu, the body of Fidel Omondi Otieno was recovered Thursday evening around 6:30 p.m. by local divers working with police and residents.

According to the police commander, Omondi, who works at a hotel in Nairobi’s Lavington neighbourhood, was one of six people who travelled from the city to see the waterfalls at Kiringa River.

Gicheru is said to have slipped and fallen into the waters while taking a photo while on a tour of the falls.

The victim was swept away by the raging waters, and his fate has remained unknown since the incident on Wednesday.

“They were eight people. Six were from Nairobi and two from Kutus in Kirinyaga,” said the police commander.

Residents and friends gathered on the riverbank until last night, when the body was recovered and taken to Kerugoya mortuary.

The body was discovered 50 metres from where he was said to have drowned.
