Police officers from the Obama Police Station in Kayole have seized and destroyed more than 100 litres of illicit brew following a night raid targeting illegal alcohol dens in Mwengenye, near Dandora Bridge along the Nairobi River.
The Thursday operation, conducted by a multi-agency team, also led to the confiscation of several 20-litre jerricans used in the production of kangara, a potent and locally brewed illegal alcohol. Authorities have since launched investigations to identify and apprehend those behind the illicit trade.
The swoop in Kayole forms part of an intensified nationwide crackdown on illicit brews and drugs, spearheaded by the National Police Service (NPS).
Earlier in the week, police in Kilifi County arrested two individuals in separate anti-narcotics operations. One of the suspects, apprehended in Kibaoni, was found with suspected narcotics, while another, arrested a day later, is also facing a charge of robbery with violence. Police are still pursuing two other members of the gang who managed to escape during the Wednesday raid.
In a statement posted on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the NPS reiterated its commitment to stamping out illicit substances and appealed for public cooperation in the fight against the vice.
“We continue to urge the public to support law enforcement efforts by sharing information on illegal activities in their communities,” read the statement in part.
The latest crackdown comes amid growing public concern over the widespread consumption of unsafe and unregulated brews across Kenya.
