Police fired tear gas at leaders of the Azimio Coalition Party who were protesting outside the offices of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in Nairobi on Monday.
Some MPs were caught up in the ensuing melee, even as police demanded that the leaders disperse their supporters before appearing before the electoral body.
The MPs led by Ruaraka lawmaker TJ Kajwang were blocked by armed officers from accessing Anniversary towers to protest the interdiction of the commission’s deputy CEO Ruth Kulundu.
The legislators had accused IEBC of victimising Kulundu for not conforming to the will of her bosses after the August 9 presidential poll.”The conduct of the two individuals, Wafula Chebukati and Marjan Hussein portrays an institution that has surrendered its independence and disregarded the rule of law,” Kajwang stated.
Azimio leaders want Kulundu reinstated, even as they accuse IEBC of targeting officials perceived to be friendly to the party.
