Pope Picks New Nairobi Archbishop

Pope Francis has named Archbishop Phillip Anyolo to lead the Nairobi Catholic Archdiocese.

The appointment was announced by Archbishop Bert Van Megen, Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan, who wrote an official statement to the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB).

“I have the honour and pleasure to inform you that Pope Francis has appointed The Most Reverend Phillip Anyolo, presently Archbishop of Kisumu, as the Archbishop of Nairobi,” Megen stated.
 

Anyolo was the KCCB’s former Chairman. He was appointed following Cardinal John Njue’s retirement.

Bishop Anyolo hails from Tongeren, Bungoma. He was ordained a priest on 15th October 1983.

He was installed as the bishop of Kericho Diocese on 6th December 1995.

Later he was made the bishop of Homabay Diocese on 23rd May 2003. Until today’s appointment, he has been the Archbishop of Kisumu from 15th November 2018.

Since Njue’s retirement, the Archdiocese of Nairobi’s Apostolic Administrator is Nairobi Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau.

Nairobi Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau has been the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Nairobi.
