President Grants Freedom To57 Inmates; 31 of them Serving Life Sentences

President William Ruto has exercised the prerogative of mercy under Article 133 of the Constitution, offering clemency to 57 inmates.

Following recommendations by the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee (POMAC), the President authorized the conditional release of 31 individuals serving life sentences, while one foreign national — a citizen of an East African Community (EAC) partner state — was conditionally released and repatriated.

Additionally, 25 inmates received remission and release, enabling their discharge after partial sentence completion.

In a broader gesture of goodwill, the President has also granted general amnesty to all petty offenders serving sentences of six months or less, as well as to those whose remaining jail terms have been reduced to six months or less.

Speaking through Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, Felix K. Koskei, the President emphasized the need for a justice system rooted in reconciliation, rehabilitation, and reintegration, encouraging stakeholders to adopt practices that heal and restore communities.

The full details of the presidential pardons are set to be published in this week’s issue of the Kenya Gazette.

This act of mercy not only breathes new life into many families but also reaffirms Kenya’s resolve to balance justice with compassion, in line with constitutional values and human dignity.
