President William Ruta has assured farmers that the government will continue to intervene to ensure the availability of cheaper fertilizers.
Ruto said during the 59th Mashujaa Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens that his government will continue its efforts to protect farmers from the otherwise high global price of fertilizers.
The government imported 1.5 million 50kg bags of fertiliser last month and made it available at a reduced price across the country for the short rainy season.
“We have made arrangements to make another six million bags of various types of fertlisers available for the long rain season,” Ruto said.
“We have asked county governments to work with us on the last mile deliveries to centers close to farmers so that fertilisers can be easily accessible,” he said.
According to Ruto, this is aimed at eradicating the country’s food shortage caused by a prolonged drought with three years of failed long rains.
