President Ruto Named Most Influential African Leader On Twitter

According to the 2022 Twiplomacy World Leader Power Ranking, President William Ruto is the most influential African leader on Twitter in 2022, ranking 13th in the world.

Ruto, who has over 5.6 million Twitter followers, was also named the third most influential newly elected leader on Twitter by the agency, which has been tracking the growth of Digital Diplomacy since 2012.

Ruto was followed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the most influential world leader on Twitter, closely followed by US President Joe Biden and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoan.

Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss is currently ranked first among female world leaders.

Truss took office in September 2022 as the UK’s third female prime minister and its shortest-serving leader, amid a flurry of political scandals rocking the Conservative Party.

Finland’s premier, Sanna Marin, came second. Marin was elected as the youngest sitting Prime Minister in 2019, catapulting her to international prominence.

The World Health Organization took the top spot with 1.5 times the influence of UNICEF, which came in second among global organizations. The WHO Twitter account has more followers than McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, and Walmart combined, and the pandemic’s growing influence is expected to last until 2022.

UNESCO, UNHCR, and UN Women rounded out the top five.

The most powerful world leaders, according to the agency, are those with large personalities who use Twitter as a direct channel of communication with their audiences and influencers.

“The ranking reveals that you can’t take the social out of social media – even for politicians,” the agency said in it’s report.

”That doesn’t, however, necessarily correlate with domestic popularity, with several high-ranking figures facing challenges to their leadership at home,” it added.

The ranking is informed by an analysis of data collected between October 1, 2021, and September 30, 2022.
