UDA Denies Plan To Stretch Ruto Presidency

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has denied reports that it intends to abolish the two-term presidential term limit.

On Tuesday, November 8, UDA issued a statement in which it distanced itself from the claims made by Fafi Member of Parliament Salah Yakub.

The party insisted that it was keen to help President William Ruto in carrying out his campaign promises.

“Remarks by Fafi MP Salah Yakub that there are plans to extend term limits for the President are a product of a fertile imagination by the legislator. UDA distances itself from the utterances by the MP. The Party has not been part of discussions in regard to term limits. The Party is busy implementing The Plan and will not be part of sideshows,” UDA stated.

Fafi MP Salah Yakub allegedly stated that the UDA intended to introduce a constitutional amendment Bill to replace the two-term limit with a 75-year age limit.

Because President William Ruto is 55 years old, the amendments would allow him to rule for 20 years.

According to a report published by Nation Africa, the plan to change the presidential term limit was hatched in a private closed-door meeting.

He did not, however, reveal the sponsors of the constitutional amendment bill.

Following the revelation, UDA lawmakers took to the floor to chastise the MP. They argued, led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, that the party believed in the rule of law.

“However, he must be reminded that UDA believes in the doctrine of Basic Structure and Essential Clauses in our Constitution. He is wrong and grossly out of order,” Khalwale stated.

“Please take note of this, as the National Party, Chairman I wish to categorically state that Hon. Yakub made a personal statement that has nothing to do with UDA. As a Party, we stand for open Democracy and we remain supportive of the two-term presidential limit and no ongoing discussions to scrap it.” UDA chairperson Johnson Muthama added.
