William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance and Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance had hired 54 and 41 lawyers, respectively, to represent them in the presidential election petition filed before the Supreme Court.
However, the Supreme Court has ruled that Azimio, Kenya Kwanza, and the IEBC will each have only four lawyers representing them.
The apex court revealed that it made the decision due to the need to follow COVID protocols, limited space, timelines, and security.
Ruto’s camp has protested the ruling, urging the Supreme Court to revise it to ensure fairness in hearings.
Hustler Nation Spokesperson Dennis Itumbi and City Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi have both condemned the Supreme Court’s decision, claiming that it does not favor Ruto.
“From the perspective of a layperson, the Directions on Counsel are UNFAIR! TWENTY lawyers will represent those attempting to void WSR’s election. WSR, on the other hand, will be represented by only FOUR lawyers. You can see it if you calculate the time allotted to each lawyer or side “Dennis Itumbi, a spokesperson for Hustler Nation, stated.
“The Supreme Court MUST REVISE IMMEDIATELY the rule of four lawyers per party that it imposed. It’s simply absurd. President-elect William Ruto and @IEBCKenya are defending 8(EIGHT) petitions, and you provide them with 4 lawyers, whereas a petitioner in a single petition will also receive 4 lawyers…” Ahmednasir Abdullahi, a lawyer, stated.
