PSV: 50,000 fine for lacking special seats for Pregnant Mothers

Passangers scramble for matatus during Rush Hour

Matatu owners will be fined up to Sh50, 000 for failing to provide specially designed seats for expectant mothers.

This bylaw was among the new laws in Nairobi City County’s transport bill 2019 that was presented to the county assembly

Vehicles operating in the city center will be required to reserve up to three special seats for disabled people, pregnant mothers, and infants.

The bill, however, excludes the 14-seater matatus but says a PSV with 17-passenger capacity will have one special seat while those with 18 to 35 must have two special seats.

Buses with a capacity of more than 35-passengers will be required to designate three seats for special groups under the proposed law that is expected to attract a stiff opposition from matatu owners.

Currently, matatus do not provide unique seats for special groups.
