Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that his talks with U.S. President Donald Trump could serve as a foundation for resolving the war in Ukraine and rebuilding relations between Moscow and Washington.
Speaking at a joint news conference following their summit, Putin expressed hope that the agreements reached during the meeting would mark a “reference point” for progress. “I expect that today’s agreements will become a reference point, not only for solving the Ukrainian problem, but will also launch the restoration of business-like, pragmatic relations between Russia and the United States,” he said.
While he did not provide details on what was agreed, Putin emphasized the “enormous potential” for bilateral cooperation in energy, technology, space exploration, and the Arctic. “I have every reason to believe that by moving along this path, we can reach an end to the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible,” he added.
The two leaders did not take questions from reporters, leaving unclear what concrete steps, if any, had been decided. The summit marked their most direct engagement since Trump took office, amid continued international pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
