According to Fred Oluoch, the county director of public health, they received a call to action following the outbreak of a rare diseases attacking fishermen on two Lake Victoria beaches.
The two beaches, Singida and Ogenya are located in Nyando Sub County.
“I want to confirm that the team from the health department is already on the ground and we have collected samples of urine, stool and blood to go and found out”.
The alarm was raised by Ahero Ward representative Ken Ooko who noted that for the past four days, they have received complaints from fishermen over pains or swelling of the stomach.
According to Ooko, the complaints have caused fear and concern among the fishermen and communities along the two beaches.
“There is an urgent need for action on this. We must understand what is going on and what the symptoms mean “He told the press.
Ooko, who is also the assembly Majority Leader, added that he immediately contacted the county’s health department after receiving the report.
“I am relieved that the Department of Health dispatched a team on Wednesday evening and began conducting tests to determine what this disease is,” he said.
