Anne Nderitu, the Registrar of Political Parties, has urged political parties to resolve nomination issues by April 22.
Nderitu indicated that they have already received complaints from some eligible aspirants in some political parties about the granting of direct tickets, but that they are unable to handle the issues because they are outside of their purview.
“We have received complaints about the issue of direct ticket issuance to some candidates. But as we know the selection of aspirants is the sole responsibility of political parties. Political parties may issue tickets using different methods including consensus or affirmative action,” she said.
The registrar of political parties stated that while political parties are free to choose the legal process for selecting candidates for the August 9th elections, it must be done equitably.
In areas where the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has used direct nominations, the party has begun the process of refunding nomination fees to candidates.
The party has begun giving direct tickets to select candidates just days after releasing a schedule for party primaries from April 1 to April 22 utilizing the universal suffrage system of registered members.
The National Election Board (NEB) has agreed to refund nomination fees to defeated candidates in areas where a ticket has attracted more than one eligible candidate and the party has issued a direct ticket.
One among the applicants who was denied a ticket was Garissa Governor Ali Korane, who attempted to defend his seat with an ODM ticket.
