After intensive protests led by coast Members of Parliament and haulers, the Government has bowed to pressure and suspended the compulsory transportation of cargo by SGR.


This follows protests by transporters after they complained that the SGR had grounded their business. The tension was high in Mombasa ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations to be held at the Iconic Mana Ngina drive.

The residents had vowed to boycott the celebrations if the Government did not suspend the compulsory SGR deal.

The business community in Mombasa had accused Mombasa Governor of abandoning them after his firm won a lucrative tender to transport cargo on SGR.
