Following a report by a Senate committee chaired by Kisumu Senator Fred Outa, environmentalist Joannah Stutchbury could have been killed by an individual who illegally owned portions of Kiambu forest.

According to a Senate National Security Committee report, Stutchbury may have been murdered by an illegal forest occupier who built a road through riparian land to gain access to his property.

The 67-year-old was shot six times outside her home on July 15, 2020, when she got out of her car to clear her driveway, which had been blocked by branches.

“The committee recommends the Inspector General of Police and the DCI investigate the said individual with a view of arrest and prosecution for the death of Ms. Joannah Stutchbury,” the report reads.

The panel recommended repossession of 31.82 acres of the vast forest claimed by individuals who do not have ownership documents in a committee report tabled in the Senate last week.

A company owns 16.98 acres, while the remaining 14.84 acres are claimed by those who do not have proof of ownership.
