Kenya’s Reynold Cheruiyot delivered a sensational performance at the Doha Diamond League, storming to victory in the men’s 5,000 metres with a new Personal Best (PB) time of 13:16.40.
At just 20 years old and in only his second-ever 5,000m race, Cheruiyot closed the final lap in a blistering 54 seconds to outpace a competitive field, including Switzerland’s Dominic Lobalu, who finished second in 13:17.70 — a Season Best — and Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew, who took third in a dramatic photo finish.
Cheruiyot’s time marks a remarkable improvement from his previous PB of 13:33.05, clocked at altitude in Nairobi back in 2022.
The young Kenyan, who only reached the semifinals in the 1500m at the Paris Olympics, has now firmly placed himself among the rising stars of long-distance running.
This dominant performance is being hailed as a breakthrough moment, showcasing Cheruiyot’s growing strength and tactical maturity on the international stage.
With the Paris 2025 World Championships on the horizon, all eyes will be on the soft-spoken athlete from Kenya who just made a bold statement under the lights of Doha.
