A 20-year-old man in Isiolo county is recovering from injuries sustained in an elephant assault on Tuesday morning, August 17th, 2021.
The two elephants went from Isiolo Town to Buffalo Springs National Reserve and ended up in a residential neighborhood, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service on Twitter.
The KWS Isiolo team was able to save him, according to the service, and brought him to the hospital, where he is recovering. Residents in Isiolo town rushed into hiding for their protection as a result of this occurrence, which produced a lot of panic and commotion.
Before invading, the elephants had broken a perimeter wall of one of the town’s boarding secondary schools.
The stray elephants were arrested and returned to the sanctuary. “In the meantime, the Service has improved procedures to monitor elephant mobility within the region in order to prevent them from wandering into residential areas,” the Service said.
The continuing drought in the region, as well as livestock invasions into the reserve, are thought to have displaced these jumbos. Due to harsh weather circumstances, elephants are believed to stray to farms in search of water and grass.
The farmers have tried a variety of tactics to fend off the elephants, but they have all failed. The crops are ruined, and the farmers are forced to rely on emergency food.
