The handshake team ganged up to veto the controversial Political Parties (Amendments) Bill, 2021, dealing a blow to Deputy President William Ruto and his troops in Parliament.
As the Bill goes to the final stage, Ruto’s lieutenants were handily outnumbered, embarrassing the invisible grip on the National Assembly.
Ruto’s team has frequently claimed that they have more seats in the bicameral Parliament than President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
However, 115 MPs aligned with Uhuru and Raila voted to support Bill’s debate during the vote.
Only 68 MPs voted for Ruto, allowing the Bill to move through to the third reading.
Ruto’s men were vehemently opposed to the proposed bill, which paves the path for the formation of a coalition party.
They characterized it as an attempt by the “deep state” to exert control over the August 2022 elections by legalizing Raila’s Azimio la Umoja.
Tangatanga legislators have threatened to take the battle to court.
The defeat of Ruto’s camp, according to Minority Leader John Mbadi, answers the question of which party has the majority in Parliament.
“We’ve been informed there are roughly 150 members supporting a specific cause, but when we go to the floor of this House, the members are barely 20, which is why they’re creating such a racket,” the Suba South MP remarked
