SACCOs Lauded For Self-Regulating Overloaders

Transporters have identified the SACCOs as key stakeholders in sensitizing truck drivers and companies against overloading.

SACCOs, which were formed to streamline the transport sector, have undertaken measures to educate on the East African Community Schedule on axle load limits.

A spot check by Uzalendo News revealed that transport agencies have to be incorporated into SACCOs in order to kick off their cooperation, this is to ensure collective responsibility and quick escalation of their grievances to the government.

Eric Masini, working under the Kitengela SACCO, attends all the meetings held to address issues of axle loads. He admits to positive feedback and assistance to curb overloading.

“We are normally called for meetings to be told about what the government has passed in regard to axle load limits. This is important for fostering our relationship with security.

Eric echoed the government’s call to curb overloading, stating that truck damage is mostly caused by stress on the axle load limits. This has made other drivers lose trust and business due to frequent breakdowns.

“If we all decide to carry capacity, our load will be less stressful on the shocks. This will ensure longer life on the road.”

KENHA Axle load operatives from Suswa say the cooperation from SACCOs has eased relations with drivers.

Their contribution, KENHA said, has led to lower axle load-related offences due to strict self-regulation among SACCOs.
