Sadio Mane Ruled Out Of World Cup

Mane has been the team's star, converting the game-winning penalty in the Africa Cup of Nations final in Cameroon in February and ensuring World Cup qualifying six weeks later.

Senegal striker Sadio Mane will miss the Qatar 2022 World Cup owing to a leg injury, according to the team’s doctor.

“Unfortunately, today’s [Thursday] MRI reveals that the progress is not as favorable as we anticipated, and we must remove Sadio from the World Cup,” Manuel Afonso stated in a video posted on the official Senegal Twitter account on Thursday. He also stated that surgery will be required shortly.

Mane has been ruled out of the tournament due to a right fibula injury sustained while playing for Bayern Munich against Werder Bremen in a German league match on November 8, according to the country’s football organization.

The majority of Senegal’s World Cup team landed in Qatar on Sunday. On Monday, the squad will face the Netherlands in its opening encounter in Qatar.

Senegal hosts Qatar four days after playing the Netherlands. On November 29, it will play Ecuador in its last Group A encounter.

Mane has been the team’s star, converting the game-winning penalty in the Africa Cup of Nations final in Cameroon in February and ensuring World Cup qualifying six weeks later. They defeated Egypt on post-match penalties on both occasions.

Mane, 30, has won the African Footballer of the Year award twice.
