Safaricom, the leading telecom operator, is set to make the M-Pesa paybill service available to rivals Airtel and Telkom.
The service’s availability to rival networks is expected to mark the second phase of mobile-money merchant interoperability, a project supported by both the Communication Authority of Kenya-CA and the Central Bank of Kenya-CBK.
Safaricom opened M-Pesa tills to customers from competing networks earlier this year in April, allowing users on competing networks to make direct payments to M-Pesa tills from their mobile wallets.
Safaricom’s launch of Paybills completes the circle of mobile money merchant interoperability, which began with person-to-person-P2P interoperability in 2018, allowing Kenyans on different networks to send money to one another.
