Heed Calls To Protect Children From Sexual Predators Online

With many children flocking various internet sites for their day-to-day lives, the web is becoming a great danger to minors.

A campaign has been launched to safeguard children against threats of abuse and sexual exploitation going in online platforms.

In Kilifi County, state and non-state entities commemorated International Safe Users Day this year.

As part of the sensitization campaign, they staged a parade from Pwani University to Karisa Maitha field to raise public awareness about the necessity of protecting children from internet abuse.

Other placards had the message of ‘Wanasiasa pass bills zenye zinaprotect Watoto Mitandaoni’ (Politicians pass bills that protect children online), “Wazazi fahamu shughuli za mtoto wako Mtandaoni,’ (parents know what your children are doing online) among others.

Speaking during the 10th International safe internet day Child Fund Country Director Alice Anukur said together with their partners they are working to ensure safe internet use for children.

Margaret Ngotho the Life Skills Promoters Project Manager for the Child Online Safety program said there was a need to have the right legislations and policies to guide the use of the internet especially for Children.

She said they are giving children tips on detecting online predators, especially those exploiting children through sex.

He said they work with other stakeholders such as Child Fund, and the county government to ensure they celebrate the day and address the safety concerns of children online.
